Stress And Coping Behavior : The Effects Of Poverty On Women And Children, Laura J. Sorensen Lyons
Stress And Coping Behavior : The Effects Of Poverty On Women And Children, Laura J. Sorensen Lyons
Graduate Research Papers
The following paper reviews research on poverty, its effects on women and their children, and how they cope with the increased level of stress. There are more single headed households now than ever, the majority headed by women. This adds an increased level of stress on both the women and the children they care for. Research also shows that a large number of these families are also coping with the special needs of their children. This stress leads many women and children to cope in some conventional and unconventional ways.
Schools are playing an increasingly larger role in the lives …

The Segmented Assimilation Approach To Immigration And Adaptation: I Am The "New Second Generation", Charee Mooney
The Segmented Assimilation Approach To Immigration And Adaptation: I Am The "New Second Generation", Charee Mooney
Iowa Journal of Communication
The segmented assimilation approach is a sociological theory that examines the assimilation outcomes of second generation immigrant peoples, or those born in the United States with at least one foreign-born parent. This is the story of how l a Vietnamese immigrant child, researched segmented assimilation as I grappled to understand why other immigrant children seemed to be on so many different life paths. This is also the story of how I avoided and then attempted to confront and reclaim my lived experiences. In the process, I realized that family solidarity and support have always been my reason and my purpose.

Parental Involvement In Child's Education : Does It Help? How Can We Make It Better?, Keith Galloway
Parental Involvement In Child's Education : Does It Help? How Can We Make It Better?, Keith Galloway
Graduate Research Papers
How often and in what ways do my students' parents get involved in their children's education? How important do the parents of my students think it is to get involved in their children's education? How do I find out how and how much my student's parents involve themselves in their children's education?
For those parents already involved in their children's education, how do I get these parents to increase their involvement in their children's education? How do I convince the parents who are not involved in their children's education just how important it is?
The research discussed in this paper …

Are Paralympics Athletes Experiencing Serious Leisure?, Janet Thi Ho
Graduate Research Papers
According to Stebbins (2008), Serious leisure is the systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or volunteer core activity that people find so substantial, interesting, and fulfilling that, in the typical case, they launch themselves on a (leisure) career centered on acquiring and expression a combination of its special skills, knowledge, and experience (p.5). Stebbins notes, serious leisure involves pursuing an amateur activity.
Amateurism involving sports is defined by Allison (2001), as "doing things for the love of them, doing them without reward or material gain or doing them unprofessionally" (p. 3). Allison also states "a human activity is amateur in …

Study Abroad: Products, Practices, And Perspectives Of A New Culture, Molly Marie Juza
Honors Program Theses
How does one adapt him/herself to an environment that is so different in almost every way? Noticing exactly how one is forming their gestures and body movements so as not to offend anyone, modifying one’s point-of-view on issues that seem so straightforward like cutting in line, and realizing that even facial expressions are partially culturally determined are among countless other topics within the situations that sojourners voluntarily place themselves for months at a time. How do they adapt to these strange new situations? What are some of the difficulties in adapting? What aspects of their home culture do they maintain? …

Reading Instruction At The Secondary Level, Justified Or Unjustified? : Real Strategies For Content Area Reading Instruction With Applications For Social Studies, Bridgette Pohlman Andersen
Graduate Research Papers
Reading research conclusively asserts that reading is developmental in nature and requires explicit instruction beyond the elementary years. However, secondary education is dominated by content area curricula, leaving little instructional time for literacy. Standardized assessments reveal that middle and high school students' reading comprehension scores remain stagnant, yet society's literacy demands have increased. In order for students to become independent learners and productive citizens, reading comprehension strategies need to be embedded in existing classroom practices. Research-based practices for comprehension that can be used before, during and after reading are presented. A professional development session, covering two years, is included that …
A Light Unto Our Path: Toward A Mutual Understanding Of Fundamentalist Christianity And Science, Kassidy K. Lyons
A Light Unto Our Path: Toward A Mutual Understanding Of Fundamentalist Christianity And Science, Kassidy K. Lyons
Honors Program Theses
My research into the Christian fundamentalist and scientific worldviews shows that existing hostility between the two can be attributed to extremists on either side. Such polarization can be a hindrance to all involved by inhibiting scientific learning and disregarding valid methods to signify and understand one’s place in the world. I explore each worldview and its validity as well as provide examples of how each can be harmful when taken to the extreme. I then outline philosophies by Stephen Jay Gould, Michael Ruse, Marcus Borg, Karl Popper and others who deny extremism and will allow an individual to find middle …

Voluntary Simplicity And Its Effects On Personal Identity, Family Life, And Relationships, Julie Ann Fox
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
With the seemingly endless advance of technology and the resulting cheaper material goods, consumption levels have risen to record highs. Over-consumption is having devastating effects on the environment, as well as on families and societies. We are encouraged by the advertising industry to consume at every turn, and buying things has become a substitute source of self-worth for many people. But an abundance of material items has not brought personal fulfillment for most Americans. A growing number of people have begun to question the hollow promises of consumerism, searching instead for alternative ways to find contentment, meaning, and purpose in …

An Exploratory Case Study Of Students' Perceptions Of Online Graduate Education, Hou Chun Kuong
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate graduate students' perceptions of online education. Online learning has grown tremendously over the past several years and has made learning and teaching opportunities more available to many people throughout the world. As an increased number of higher education institutions use online education as a means of delivering courses and programs, educational researchers have been working tirelessly to uncover and delineate the factors that facilitate and enhance success in online learning. One major factor that researchers (e.g., Pérez Cereijo, 2006) have established as a predictor of success is students' perceptions of online learning. …

In times of uncertainty and change where the job market is fluid and the U.S. economy is weak, students need to feel empowered to construct their lives and forge their career paths. Constructivism has been suggested as one way to empower people. The current study explored outcomes in constructivist career courses using a quasi-experimental pre/post-test design. The empowerment, indecision, and certainty of 115 culturally diverse college students were measured using the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSE-SF) and the Career Decision Scale (CDS). Results indicated that students in the career courses showed significant increases in empowerment and certainty and significant …

The Purpose Of Facebook: The Value Of Facebook Friends In Increasing Self-Perceived Popularity, Michael J. Cronin
Honors Program Theses
A survey of 407 students was conducted at a medium-sized Midwestern university to examine what motivates college students to have friends on Facebook. The goal of the study was to see if people interact with more Facebook friends than they do offline friends on a regular basis and to see if the primary reason students become friends with others on Facebook is to increase their popularity. The results suggest that students do not become Facebook friends with others to increase their popularity, which is in contrast to previous research. Results were inconclusive in determining if people regularly interact with more …

Applying The Job Strain Model: Control, Conflict, And Facilitation, Kama D. Dodge
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Among college students enrolled full-time in the U.S., approximately 48% are employed during the academic year, with 30% working more than 20 hours per week (Fox, Connolly, & Snyder, 2005). Working during the academic year may create a burden for college students, resulting in poorer academic performance and an increased time to graduate (Canabal, 1988; Trockel, Barnes, & Egget, 2000). Conversely, employment may enrich a student's education by increasing self-efficacy and shaping their plans for the future (Finch, Shanahan, Mortimer, & Ryu, 1991). In this study, I used the job demands-control (JD-C) model (Karasek, 1979) to make predictions about how …

An Analysis Of State-By-State Variations In African American Incarceration Rates, Kristen Laura Johnson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A great deal of social scientific research has examined the overrepresentation of African Americans in the American criminal justice system. Many of these analyses have focused on racial disparities in sentencing, and the disproportionate confinement of African Americans in jails and prisons. While the overrepresentation of African Americans in the criminal justice system is indisputable, explanations for this condition are often complex and controversial.
When Networks Matter : Mexican Migrants' Access To The Welfare State Through Social Ties, Margaret Louise Ralston
When Networks Matter : Mexican Migrants' Access To The Welfare State Through Social Ties, Margaret Louise Ralston
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In this thesis, I examine the relationship between social networks among Mexican migrants and usage of welfare benefits. For this research, I use the Mexican Migration Project (MMP) dataset and logistic regression to assess whether social capital plays a significant role in connecting individuals to information and resources that affect their access to public systems of social protection, including welfare benefits. Recent welfare reform legislation has made it increasingly difficult for noncitizens to access the welfare state. Following the work of Massey and Aguilera (2003), I have conceptualized social capital as respondents' connection to their U.S. community and their ties …
Positions Of Power, Abjection And Constraint: Evaluating Discursive Attempts To Save An Other, Ruth Janet Beerman
Positions Of Power, Abjection And Constraint: Evaluating Discursive Attempts To Save An Other, Ruth Janet Beerman
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Beginning from the presumption that questions of agency are important, this thesis interrogates notions of who can speak, how to speak, and what constitutes agency. Feminist rhetorical theory operates as a key avenue to evaluate negotiating positions of power and privilege when examining how to liberate oppressed groups. By utilizing feminist conceptions of the body as well as theories of performance and personae, I examine how rhetorical theory contributes to such understandings where one speaks about an other. Finally, the war in Iraq serves as a case study to illustrate my theory.
