Impacts Of Theatre On The Mental Health Of High School Students, Madeline Ludwig Jan 2021

Impacts Of Theatre On The Mental Health Of High School Students, Madeline Ludwig

Honors Program Theses

This thesis explores the effects of participation in theatre on mental health in high school students. Though there has been more research since 2008 on mental health and its relation to the arts, there have been very few focused on mental health and theatre. However, the majority of these studies are centered around adults or young children. There is a lack of research centered around the impacts that theatre and drama have on the mental health of high school students. This study specifically focused on college students at the University of Northern Iowa and their reflection on their time in …

Methods And Evaluation Outcomes In Speech, Language, And Hearing Camps, Lindsey Paige Carter Jan 2021

Methods And Evaluation Outcomes In Speech, Language, And Hearing Camps, Lindsey Paige Carter

Honors Program Theses

This investigation explores survey information on speech, language, and hearing camps throughout the United States. Thirty-seven speech-language pathologists from the United States agreed to complete the survey about their camp and thirteen completed the entire survey. These camps are growing in popularity and express benefits of attendance. There is currently limited research on assessment measures taken pre- and post- camp to determine the effectiveness of these camps. The purpose of this study was to investigate the structure of these camps, pre- and post- camp evaluation methods, how success is defined, and the impact these camps have. Results from the survey …

The Idolization Of Ada Lovelace And Its Necessity, Autumn Lauen Jan 2021

The Idolization Of Ada Lovelace And Its Necessity, Autumn Lauen

Honors Program Theses

Ada Lovelace is a recognizable name in the field of computer science, but few people know and truly understand why. It is common knowledge that Ada Lovelace is known as the world’s first computer programmer. A simple Google search would also show that her contributions occurred in the mid-1800s. This is where any logical person may become confused and rightfully inquire how a person in the Victorian era has become so closely associated with modern computer science. The answer to that question is exactly as complicated and disputed as expected.

Ada Lovelace’s fame stems from her work with Charles Babbage …

Assessing The Implicit Curriculum In Social Work Education: An Examination Of The University Of Northern Iowa Students' Experiences, Madison Motz Jan 2021

Assessing The Implicit Curriculum In Social Work Education: An Examination Of The University Of Northern Iowa Students' Experiences, Madison Motz

Honors Program Theses

As part of a social work program’s accreditation process, social work programs across the United States are now being asked to assess their implicit curriculum, defined as the educational environment in which the explicit curriculum is presented, as new evidence has shown that implicit curriculum plays an important role in the learning, development, and professional outcome of social work students. Following the wake of a series of student diversity-related injustices across the state of Iowa, our team set out to create an implicit curriculum survey tool shaped by the experiences, concerns, and feedback presented by students within the social work …

Exploring Eating Disorders In Athletes: A Literature Review And Analysis Of Prevention Strategies, Emily Schotzko Jan 2021

Exploring Eating Disorders In Athletes: A Literature Review And Analysis Of Prevention Strategies, Emily Schotzko

Honors Program Theses

Both clinical and subclinical eating disorders (ED) are marked by body image disturbance and preoccupation with food, weight, and body shape, and lead to harmful weight management behaviors if not prevented or treated (Bratland-Sanda & Sundgot-Borgen, 2013). While there is a multitude of risk factors that influence the likelihood of developing an ED, one particular factor that has garnered significant attention recently is participation in athletics. Studies show that while athletics can build self-esteem and promote overall well-being,there is evidence that athletes are at an elevated risk for ED development (Hinton & Kubas, 2005). Researchers suggest this risk can be …

The Zones Of Regulation In Schools, Kyle Andrew-Kelly Wiebers Jan 2021

The Zones Of Regulation In Schools, Kyle Andrew-Kelly Wiebers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Emotion regulation is a concept that has existed within the literature for decades, but the presence of emotion regulation programs in schools is a relatively new concept in research (Durlak et al., 2011). Research suggests that emotional regulation skills are related to improved peer relationships and academic success (Denham & Brown, 2010; Durlak et al., 2011). Students who exhibited well-adjusted, or adaptive, emotion regulation had better peer relationships and were more productive and accurate when completing academic tasks (Denham & Brown, 2010; Dvir et al., 2014; Kim & Cicchetti, 2010; Kim‐Spoon et al., 2013; Lereya et al., 2015). For this …

Rising Above The Stigma: Developing Young Leaders Through Peer Mentoring, Shawn Miller Jan 2021

Rising Above The Stigma: Developing Young Leaders Through Peer Mentoring, Shawn Miller

Graduate Research Papers

Permanence is ideally the ultimate goal of the child welfare system, however it is unrealistic to believe that every young adult transitioning out of care will not only find a permanent home, but have had the opportunity to build the social capital needed for a successful transition in today’s society (Scannapieco, Smith, Blakeney-Strong, 2015).

The Impact Of Advocacy And Social Justice Work On Nonprofit Funding And Support, Brittany Appleton Jan 2021

The Impact Of Advocacy And Social Justice Work On Nonprofit Funding And Support, Brittany Appleton

Graduate Research Papers

Advocacy and social justice work has become a widely discussed topic over the past year, especially in the nonprofit world. As organizations work to move their mission forward and address critical issues in their community, they must balance the delicate relationships they have with their clients, their supporters, other organizations, and the community as a whole. This includes navigating their mission, vision, and values and the values and beliefs of supporters and community members. Taking an active role in advocacy and social justice work can impact these relationships, but little research has been done that shows what that impact could …

Demechanizing Whiteness: Lessons From Theatre Of The Oppressed, Elizabeth J. Simpson Nov 2020

Demechanizing Whiteness: Lessons From Theatre Of The Oppressed, Elizabeth J. Simpson

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

The Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) provides small group techniques to strategize and “rehearse” for collaborative liberation using popular education forms of systems analysis, bolstered by practices that counter implicit biases and habituated behaviors. This essay draws on interviews with jokers at CTO-Rio to advocate the need for continual engagement of demechanizing practices both within TO and in the lives of practitioners in order to demechanize the tenets of white supremacy that we are born into, despite our essential loving nature, with particular focus on counteracting a the habit of exploiting Black suffering for creative capital.

Rehearsing For Transformation: Theatre Of The Oppressed, Pedagogy And Human Rights, Amir Al-Azraki

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

The report showcases a series of TO training workshops and projects in several contexts and settings. The aim of the report is to show how TO techniques and forms could contribute to the transformation of the learning environment and the social justice issues relevant to diverse communities across cultures (North America, Latin America, Middle East). It highlights and facilitates critical discourse and interchange through working with various participants (students, faculty, refugees, women, artists, prison staff etc.) and tackling significant issues such as trauma, violence, oppression, discrimination, gender inequality and homophobia. The report shows how TO could be used as a …

Aweke Tadesse - Embarc, Aweke Tadesse

Robert and Yvonne Koob Fund for Student Community Engagement Recipients

My accomplishment can be summarized in three different activity areas. First, involving with COVID-19 patents as a front line resource mobilizer team. I had an opportunity to work with RISE staff at Sioux City and access connections with a patient from the Ethiopian immigrant community who don't speak English. My role was to provide information as to how the patent can get health, housing, and food assistance. I have contacted different EMBARC partner agencies and service providers and provided information to the client. Second, I have developed a cultural presentation about Ethiopian and Ethiopian immigrants living in the US and …

The Impact Of Severe Mental Health On Peers In Supporting Roles: A Look At Secondary Trauma And College Students, Courtney Tripp-Stuck May 2020

The Impact Of Severe Mental Health On Peers In Supporting Roles: A Look At Secondary Trauma And College Students, Courtney Tripp-Stuck

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Evidence indicates directors of college counseling centers and those in student affairs roles have observed a steep increase in the number of severe mental health crises on their campuses, thereby also impacting student leaders and those in helping roles as counseling centers try to adapt to the influx of need (Kitzrow, 2003; CAS, 1999). Additionally, there is evidence to support students are more likely to turn to peers first when experiencing mental health crises than they are to seek out professional help (Drum, Brownson, Burton-Denmark, Smith, & Roberts, 2009; Gallagher, 2013). The goal of this study is to examine whether …

School Counseling At Hansen Elementary, Addi Seybert Apr 2020

School Counseling At Hansen Elementary, Addi Seybert

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Over the course of the spring semester, I partnered with Hansen Elementary to fulfill my Psychology Cooperative Education internship. While there, I worked closely with the school counselor (Jen Alexander) to teach children K-6 about things such as emotional well-being, conflict resolution, making goals, and building healthy, lasting relationships. As one of the interns, I was able to meet with students one-on-one as well as assist faculty in classroom lessons. My role at Hansen Elementary has opened my eyes to the world of school counseling and has inspired me to pursue a career in the field.

Aspen Olsen - Highland Elementary School, Aspen Olsen

Robert and Yvonne Koob Fund for Student Community Engagement Recipients

Unfortunately, my time at Highland Elementary was cut abruptly short due to school closures as a result of COVID-19 . However, I was able to work with a caseload of an average of 10 students. I provided one-on-one therapist sessions once weekly. I worked with them to process trauma, learn how to self-regulate their emotions, work on alleviating problematic behaviors in the classroom, and/or develop coping skills and strategies. More specifically in the sessions, we completed Theraplay Exercises, Sand Tray Therapy, played Emotion Uno, made Stress Balls, etc. I helped determine the needs of the students and helped connect them …

Perceptions Of The Police: The Role Of Need For Cognition And Numeracy, Carolyn Pham Mar 2020

Perceptions Of The Police: The Role Of Need For Cognition And Numeracy, Carolyn Pham

Research in the Capitol

The public’s perceptions of the police are critical; positive perceptions are related to people’s willingness to obey the law and cooperate with law enforcement. Past research has found that demographic variables are related to perceptions of the police. This study hypothesizes that those with a higher level of need for cognition and numeracy are more likely to view the police positively. This study included 443 U.S. residents; in addition to replicating the role of demographic variables, this study found that after controlling for demographics, perceptions of the police were positively related to need for cognition and numeracy. This study also …
