The Effects Of Divorce And Resulting Single-Parent Family Environment On The Social And Educational Development Of The Gifted Child, George E. Lowry Jan 1990

The Effects Of Divorce And Resulting Single-Parent Family Environment On The Social And Educational Development Of The Gifted Child, George E. Lowry

Graduate Research Papers

Divorce can be a very difficult time for adults, but it can be even more difficult for the children, who often do not understand all that is happening around them or why it is happening. They have no control over events that are taking place. Worst of all, they often have no one to whom they can talk, no one who is not somehow involved in the divorce situation. Gifted children are among the children who are frequently caught up in such a situation, and who later must adapt to living in a single-parent family as a result of divorce. …

Incidence Of Adolescent Depression In A Parochial High School, Silvio R. Encinas Jan 1990

Incidence Of Adolescent Depression In A Parochial High School, Silvio R. Encinas

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years the problem of depression among children and adolescents has become increasingly important to educators and mental health professionals such as school psychologists. Documented increases in depressive symptoms among school-age youth may be reflected in an increase in acting out behaviors in the school settings which, in turn may adversely affect academic performance, teacher expectations, and peer relationships. This study investigated the incidence of depression in a parochial high school using a self-report procedure and compared with non-parochial studies. Differences between male and female students were analyzed, it was expected to find also an inverse correlation between the …

Counseling Battered Women, Dorothy A. Turner Jan 1989

Counseling Battered Women, Dorothy A. Turner

Graduate Research Papers

Violence against women by men is not a new problem. Certain cultures have encouraged it; others have regulated it. English common law, after which American laws are patterned, gave husbands the right to chastise their wives. The ''rule of thumb" referred to the right of a husband to beat his wife with a stick "no thicker than his thumb" (Martin, 1983, p.46). Most states adopted this policy, acknowledging wife beating as acceptable, up to a point. This attitude was best summed up by an old North Carolina court ruling that stated, "unless some permanent injury be inflicted or there be …

The Etiology Of Domestic Violence Against Women: A Theoretical Overview, Andrea Athey Jan 1989

The Etiology Of Domestic Violence Against Women: A Theoretical Overview, Andrea Athey

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, a man's right to control his mate through violence has been legally and culturally sanctioned. The expression "rule of thumb" originates in ancient Rome and refers to the common law practice which allowed a man to strike his wife with a stick provided the stick was no thicker than his thumb (Gelles , 1987) .

Familial Perspectives With Regard To Chemical Dependency, Samantha Jo Pieters Jan 1989

Familial Perspectives With Regard To Chemical Dependency, Samantha Jo Pieters

Graduate Research Papers

Recent literature supports the belief that alcoholism has adverse effects on family systems. It is the intention of this paper to illustrate what role alcohol plays in family systems, and how family members react to this disease. This review of literature has a second purpose which is to discuss how family therapists propose to treat chemical dependency.

Family Therapy And The Treatment Of Alcoholism, Stephanie L. Lieder Jan 1989

Family Therapy And The Treatment Of Alcoholism, Stephanie L. Lieder

Graduate Research Papers

The statistics relating to alcoholism indicate the seriousness of this problem within the United States. According to Kinney and Leaton (1983), an estimated 3.3 million adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 years have serious drinking problems. Steinglass (1981) stated that nine million adults in our society either abused or were addicted to alcohol. The pervasiveness of this problem is demonstrated by Kinney and Leaton (1983) who estimated that "for every person with an alcohol problem, four family members are directly affected" (p. 25). These statistics have important ramifications for family therapy. Since family therapists generally work with two …

Aids And Dementia, Mari Lagerstrom Jan 1989

Aids And Dementia, Mari Lagerstrom

Graduate Research Papers

The origin of AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is unknown. AIDS was first recognized in the United States in 1981. Since 1981, AIDS has spread rapidly throughout the country. Initially, cases of AIDS were confined to New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles (Harris County Medical Society, 1987). AIDS is a disease caused by a virus that destroys an individual's defenses against infections (United States Department of Education, 1987). It is essentially a disease of the immune system (Check, 1988). The AIDS virus, known as Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV can so weaken an individual's immune system that he or …

Adolescent Suicide: The Secondary School's Response, Stephen K. Bomgaars Jan 1989

Adolescent Suicide: The Secondary School's Response, Stephen K. Bomgaars

Graduate Research Papers

The number of adolescent suicides has risen steadily over the past thirty years. The United States Department of Health and Human Services reported that from 1950-1982, the suicide rate for adolescents increased by 300% (McGinnis, 1987). About 6,000 young people murder themselves each year (Keasey & Keasey, 1988). According to Johnson and Maile (1987) the problem of adolescent suicide is not confined to the United States as both Canada and Western European countries have experienced an increase in suicide rates in the past ten years. Neither is the problem confined to a particular area of the United States. The overall …

"The Great Gilt Cage", Elizabeth Bingham Jan 1989

"The Great Gilt Cage", Elizabeth Bingham

Draftings In

Lily Bart, the brilliant heroine of Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth, is famous for her irresistible charm. Beautiful, clever, spirited - she captivates her audience both in the novel and out. Yet, for all her allure, Lily elicits largely ambivalent feelings from me. She attracts, yet she repels; she inspires admiration, but also disdain; she is likeable, but at times most unlikeable. I have a love-hate relationship with Lily Bart. I envy her beauty, charm and position, yet despise w she represents - the egocentric extravagance of the upper social class. At first glance, Lily and I seem …

The University Of Choice: Social Work Students At Uni, James G. Mccullagh Jan 1989

The University Of Choice: Social Work Students At Uni, James G. Mccullagh

Faculty Publications

The study examined expressed reasons for choosing the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) by undergraduate students majoring in social work there. Responses of 205 social work majors to a questionnaire found that these students chose UNI primarily because of location; size; cost; the presence of a social work program; to get a good education; to be with their friends; and to continue a family tradition. Other findings indicated that 44% of students had attended other colleges previously; that many students considered other majors before deciding on social work; that 84% of the students had been born in Iowa; that 50% …
