Nasal Resonance In Speech Sounds, Joseph P. Kelly Jan 1933

Nasal Resonance In Speech Sounds, Joseph P. Kelly

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A special phonophotographic camera makes possible the photographing of nasal resonance together with a time line. On the basis of these photographs, it is shown that each vowel has a specific nasal element in its resonance, the duration of which varies directly with the closeness of the vowel. It is shown further that the duration of nasal resonance in vowels phonated by individuals with badly nasal voices is greater than in vowels phonated by those having superior voices.

The Knowledge And Attitudes Possessed By Parents Of Elementary School Children, Lois Ackerley Jan 1933

The Knowledge And Attitudes Possessed By Parents Of Elementary School Children, Lois Ackerley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study applies a method of determining the content of a curriculum for a group composed of mothers and fathers of elementary school children. The needs of the group are determined by a comparison of what specially selected judges consider important in the care and the guidance of children, and the knowledge and attitudes possessed by the parents.

Factors Which Influence Visibility In Daylight And Under Artificial Illumination, Alvhh R. Lauer Jan 1933

Factors Which Influence Visibility In Daylight And Under Artificial Illumination, Alvhh R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study is part of an investigation sponsored by the National Research Council to ascertain the optimal colors; back-ground-legend combinations; and spacings of letters, numbers, or words of stimuli used in directing and controlling automotive traffic. One hundred and twenty-three license plates of the states and territories were subjected to analysis for ascertaining the factors involved. Later the colors of the plates were analyzed by a Razek-Mülder color analyzer for wave length as well as reflection factor of the colors.

Eye Movements Of Good Readers, Robert Y. Walker Jan 1933

Eye Movements Of Good Readers, Robert Y. Walker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Simultaneous binocular records of the vertical and horizontal eye-movements were obtained by photographic technique for fifty students ranking in the top decile in the Iowa Silent Reading Test and the University of Iowa Qualifying Examination. Norms of seven measures of eye-movements were established on reading material moderate in difficulty and requirement of comprehension. Varying difficulties of reading material and requirements of comprehension gave significant differences in eye-movements for duration of fixation, size of fixation, and rate of reading; mode of duration and extent of forward shift remained fairly constant.

A Laboratory Investigation Of Problem Solving In Plane Geometry, Lyle K. Henry Jan 1933

A Laboratory Investigation Of Problem Solving In Plane Geometry, Lyle K. Henry

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In investigating the mental processes involved in geometry problem solving the present study attempted to eliminate some of the inadequacies of paper and pencil analyses by the following procedure: 1. The stimuli were arranged according to increasing degrees of elaboration and presented to subjects, individually, through an exposure apparatus for a timed interval. 2. The subject expressed his ideas verbally, as they occurred, and these were recorded by a microphone-dictaphone unit. 3. The meanings of the responses were ascertained by cross reference and by use of a controlled set of questions. The data obtained throw light on the status of …

A Preliminary Report Of A New Departure In Mental Measurements And Some Of Its Practical Applications, D. D. Feder Jan 1933

A Preliminary Report Of A New Departure In Mental Measurements And Some Of Its Practical Applications, D. D. Feder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The field of mental measurements has been dominated by a theory sterile in its contributions to systematized psychology. Moreover, most traditional types of objective examinations do not adequately test anything more than amount of discrete information compiled. This technique goes beyond mere information, getting into the subtler intricacies of human thought and the functional aspects of intelligence. A definite theoretical psychological basis underlies this approach, and it is believed that important contributions to general theory can result from this type of experimentation. Future use in the individualization of instruction at the rate and level of the student's ability is described.

The Application Of Psychological Classification Of Changes Effected Through Learning To Problems Of Curriculum Construction, R. H. Ojemann Jan 1933

The Application Of Psychological Classification Of Changes Effected Through Learning To Problems Of Curriculum Construction, R. H. Ojemann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Descriptions of the objectives of education have varied from general, all-inclusive statements, to extended lists of details. The inadequacy of general statements has been recognized by curriculum makers and several attempts have been made to develop more detailed classifications. The best-known classifications have used a mixture of general and specific abilities, or of general and specific activities.

An Analysis Of Tone Quality Of Orchestral Instruments, Donald A. Rothschild Jan 1933

An Analysis Of Tone Quality Of Orchestral Instruments, Donald A. Rothschild

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sound waves from the instruments of the orchestra were phonophotographed, and by means of the Henrici Harmonic Analyzer the tone quality of each instrument was determined. Three notes covering the range of their registers, were taken of the wind instruments. An intensive series was taken from the string instruments to determine some of the differences in quality due to use of the mute, varied pressure in bowing, differences in fingering, and differences in structure of the instrument.

The Pattern Score In Scientific Study Of Music, Harold Seashore Jan 1933

The Pattern Score In Scientific Study Of Music, Harold Seashore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The pattern score, developed in the psychology of music to express the facts pertinent to both music and psychology, is here demonstrated in its more complete form. There is presented a sample of a song graphed on the pattern score which coordinately records the melody curve, the intensity curve, sample timbre analysis, durational aspects, facts from the musical score and phonetic elements. In its standardized form the pattern score fulfills the requirement that the basic musical and scientific concepts must be presented visually in adequately coordinated relationships.

Are The Response Latencies Of The Achilles And Patellar Reflex Responses As Recorded By The Action Current And Muscles Thickening Techniques Comparable?, Clarence L. Nystrom

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two techniques for the measurement of the latent times of the Achilles and the patellar tendon reflexes have become more or less standardized in recent years. These are: (1) the recording of the currents of action from the executant muscle; and (2) the recording of the thickening of the muscle itself.

The Role Of The Concept In Reading Ability, Paul Murphy Jan 1933

The Role Of The Concept In Reading Ability, Paul Murphy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the most fruitful fields of research in the psychology of reading has been that concerned with the analysis of specific psychological functions involved in reading. A cursory perusal of the literature, however, reveals the fact that the great majority of such investigations have dealt with the mechanical phases of the process, such as eye-movements, rate of reading, typographical factors, and related functions, leaving more or less untouched such processes as reasoning, conception, understanding, and the like. It was the hope of shedding some light on some of these untouched areas that the present investigation was undertaken.

The Effect Of Size Of Peg And Form Boards Upon The Performance Scores Of Young Children, Thomas F. Vance Jan 1933

The Effect Of Size Of Peg And Form Boards Upon The Performance Scores Of Young Children, Thomas F. Vance

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Sylvester, in 1913, characterized the form board test as one that "appeals to the child's interest, affording him a short and fascinating task which calls for his best effort and helps to free him from the fear and self-consciousness which often interfere seriously in a mental examination." The inclusion of the form board test in certain well-known scales and its serving as the basis of a number of extensive studies bear testimony to the truth of Sylvester's evaluation. Further study of the form-board may thus be justified on the basis that a still greater refinement in technique may be attainable.

The Psychology Of A Psychologist, Christian A. Ruckmick Jan 1933

The Psychology Of A Psychologist, Christian A. Ruckmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the last analysis, psychology is to be defined in terms of the professional activities of a psychologist. As in the case of other sciences, psychology may also be delimited in terms of the things it deals with. All sciences, however, have become so broad in their scope that they overlap, and the classification as regards their particular fields and their devotees can only be approximately circumscribed. To leave experience or its historical equivalent, mental process and function, out of the picture would be to resign from the commission originally given to psychology. For this reason the writer cannot agree …

An Achievement Test Of Dynamic Control In Music, O. Irving Jacobsen Jan 1933

An Achievement Test Of Dynamic Control In Music, O. Irving Jacobsen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The use of the power level indicator with readings in decibels was standardized. Musically trained observers were tested on their respective instruments, untrained observers by voice. Their achievement test was compared with their motor capacity and sensory capacity tests. Conclusions were drawn in regard to the effect of pitch level, intensity level, instruments, and training.

Substitution Of Time For Stress In Performance Of Measure Accent In Piano Music, Mack T. Henderson Jan 1933

Substitution Of Time For Stress In Performance Of Measure Accent In Piano Music, Mack T. Henderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Very definite time organizations occur within the measure of a given musical selection (3/4 time) apparently for the purpose of measure accent. Successive changes in stress do not account for measure accent nor do they operate with time changes to enhance the accent. Measurements are based upon recordings on the Iowa Piano Camera of the chorale section of Chopin's Nocturne, No. 6 (Opus 15, No. 3).

Pernicious Anemia: A Study In Psychodietetics, M. F. Fritz Jan 1933

Pernicious Anemia: A Study In Psychodietetics, M. F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Psychodietetics deals with the relationship between diet and mental behavior. A number of diseases now definitely attributed to dietary defects or deficiencies cause mental symptoms. An outstanding example of this is pernicious anemia. Mental symptoms were mentioned by Addison who first described the malady in 1855. However, its psychological aspects have frequently been overlooked, even by physicians. There are important legal implications, e.g. wills. Description of blood findings and mental disorders. Importance of the fact that the mental symptoms may precede the typical blood picture. Description of nervous involvement. Treatment by dietary methods, liver, hog's stomach, etc. Prognosis, particularly with …

A Measure Of The Amount Of Cheating By College Students, E. O. Finkenbinder Jan 1933

A Measure Of The Amount Of Cheating By College Students, E. O. Finkenbinder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Can college students be expected to score their own or others papers without overlooking some of the errors or without changing some of the answers so as to cover up errors that have been made? Papers containing +, -True, False, Yes, No as answers were photographed without the students' knowledge then returned to the class the day after the test. A chart containing the correct answers was presented for them to use as a key for scoring their papers, - in some classes their own papers, yet in other classes, papers written by other students in the class. The percentage …
