A Study Of Individualized Instruction At The College Level, Daniel D. Feder Jan 1935

A Study Of Individualized Instruction At The College Level, Daniel D. Feder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

With a philosophy that makes paramount the greatest possible growth for each individual student as the background, the Department of French at the University of Iowa has conceived and put into operation a plan of individualized instruction. This plan, in effect since September, 1933, marks the latest development of a comprehensive experimental program which has had continuous growth during the past ten years.

Effect Of Induced Manual Handicaps On Motor Performance Of A Complex Nature, Laverne Johnson, A. R. Lauer Jan 1935

Effect Of Induced Manual Handicaps On Motor Performance Of A Complex Nature, Laverne Johnson, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The question of how much one's ability to drive an automobile would be affected by the loss of an arm has been experimentally studied, under laboratory conditions, and statistically calculated. Comparison is made between manipulative ability, errors, stop signs and other stimuli missed, etc., as well as driving speed using right, left and both hands respectively.

An Experimental Study Of The Developmental Processes In Art Appreciation, Mildred Dow Voss Jan 1935

An Experimental Study Of The Developmental Processes In Art Appreciation, Mildred Dow Voss

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

To determine by what processes art appreciation could be increased, two groups of fifty children each from the second, third, and fourth grades were matched for intelligence, mental age, chronological age, socio-economic status, grade, sex, and art appreciation scores. One group served as an experimental group, the other as a control group. Art appreciation was measured by a battery of tests including the following: (1) the McAdory Art Test revised to include only the best and worst choices of each test item; (2) Part I, Section I, on recognition of proportion, of the Lewerenz Tests in Fundamental Abilities of Visual …

A Study Of Emotional Conflict On Delinquent And Non-Delinquent Boys, H. Max Houtchens Jan 1935

A Study Of Emotional Conflict On Delinquent And Non-Delinquent Boys, H. Max Houtchens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This experiment dealt with the disorganization of responses in delinquent and non-delinquent boys by the use of the Luria Technique. This consists essentially of an instrumental and objective measurement of the affective state as it appears through disturbances in the smooth flow of a complex response to a controlled word association test. Thirty delinquent boys held by probation office and thirty non-delinquent boys with no record of court appearance were used as subjects. The age range was twelve to seventeen years. The boys were individually matched on the basis of C.A., M.A., school grade placement, school, and a rough index …

Visual Factors In Space Perception, Earl Allgaier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study deals primarily with certain visual factors which enable one to detect the difference in distance between two points or objects in space. It is limited to the perception of color and movement and a comparison of binocular and monocular vision.

Prognostication Of College Marks By Rests Of Intelligence And Of High School Content, Willis J. Bell Jan 1935

Prognostication Of College Marks By Rests Of Intelligence And Of High School Content, Willis J. Bell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study reported by Bell at the Fairfield meeting (1929) covered several years of relationship between intelligence, grades, and class survival at Iowa Wesleyan College. A second study, reported by Miss Margaret Bell at the Davenport meeting (1931) covered intelligence and grades of men versus women students. This present and somewhat related study covers the past three years, during which time, only, this college has followed a uniform grading system; also during which time all freshmen have taken an intelligence test and also a test of high school performance. The American Council's Psychological Examination and the University of Iowa's High …

Course Content And Objectives, Reuel H. Sylvester Jan 1934

Course Content And Objectives, Reuel H. Sylvester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Comparisons of facts and principles taught in introductory courses in psychology in various colleges, reveal wide differences and extremes. Comparisons of various text books for such courses reveal a wide variety of subject matter. Students who complete introductory psychology in one school, might take a corresponding course in another with very little duplication. We lack standards and objectives.

The Address Of The President - Science And The Future, E. J. Cable Jan 1934

The Address Of The President - Science And The Future, E. J. Cable

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

We are truly living in a wonderful and fearful period so far as civilization is concerned. Our present social order has changed so rapidly within the last quarter of a century as to cause many writers and students of sociology to become somewhat alarmed as to its future stability. The concept of progress is one of the most profound and germinal ideas at work in our modern age.

An Analysis Of The Functional Timbre Variations Of The Violin, Arnold M. Small Jan 1934

An Analysis Of The Functional Timbre Variations Of The Violin, Arnold M. Small

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The research which has been previously directed toward the analysis of the timbre of the violin has not, to the best of my knowledge, ever objectively considered the dynamic character of the violin tone. A complete description of the timbre of the violin can never be attained until, in addition to the extant method of clang analysis, qualitative and quantitative statements are forthcoming regarding the timbre variations which are functionally based upon the tone-production factors inherent in violin playing. These factors to which I refer are essentially: (1) bow direction; (2) point at which string is activated; (3) method of …

Measurement Of Aesthetic Interests, Alvhh R. Lauer Jan 1934

Measurement Of Aesthetic Interests, Alvhh R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Allport and Vernon have considered Spranger's classification of human interests as a basis for categories in the field of social psychology. The problems of the relative importance of heredity and environment have not been satisfactorily settled using any similar basis of classification. Strong's theory of interest measurement is based primarily upon the affective supremacy in the reaction tendency systems or habit patterns. The affective and volitional elements are placed above the cognition or meaning elements.

A Criterion Of Driving Ability, Earl L. Allgaier Jan 1934

A Criterion Of Driving Ability, Earl L. Allgaier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the field of highway safety considerable work has been done to develop various tests of driving ability. In this development two major problems present themselves. First, the test itself must be perfected so as to be reliable, that is, the test must give the same result when repeated. Second, the validity of the test must be determined by comparing the results of the test with actual performance. To do this a criterion of driving ability must be established. Rating of drivers from general observation does not yield satisfactory results. As an instance of this the correlation between accidents per …

The Relative Importance Of Intensity And Time Stress In Singing, Harold Seashore Jan 1934

The Relative Importance Of Intensity And Time Stress In Singing, Harold Seashore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The factors that enter into the production and perception of rhythm in singing are so varied and complex that they almost defy clarification. In discussing rhythm of the singer, musicians have confined themselves almost entirely to one general term: stress, with its loose synonyms, accent and emphasis. These terms are not well-defined, although generally the context implies that stress, accent, and emphasis mean an increase in dynamics, a "push" in intensity. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to clarify the nature of vocal rhythm by discussing some studies of two major factors that are involved: time stress …

A New Departure In Mental Measurements, D. D. Feder Jan 1934

A New Departure In Mental Measurements, D. D. Feder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At the 1933 meeting of this group we presented a brief discussion of a proposed new departure in the field of mental measurements. At that time we pointed out the rather widespread dissatisfaction with current types of mental and educational tests. The first criticism was based upon the lack of agreement of test theory with the best psychological knowledge. Another criticism dealt with the fact that tests (especially educational tests) tended to emphasize the measurement of mere possession of knowledge rather than the functional significance of such knowledge. Finally, it was noted that the primary concern of the psychologist in …
