Science Talent Searches, F. E. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1948 the American Association for the Advancement of Science asked the cooperating academies of science in the several states to encourage larger numbers of qualified students to major in science. Seeking youth for special important service is one of the oldest activities of organized society. The Incas found beautiful maidens whose sacrifice appeased an angry god. The Babylonians trained even their abler captives such as Daniel and his friends for administrative positions. Schools have been founded to train, without charge or for small fees, preachers, lawyers, physicians and teachers as need for such training was evident.

Making Accident Statistics More Meaningful, Pearl W. Mcmurray, A. R. Lauer Jan 1951

Making Accident Statistics More Meaningful, Pearl W. Mcmurray, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

With the improvement in driver licensing and highway policing systems throughout the country there has arisen the need for better reporting and analysis of accidents and accident trends. Many states have inaugurated standard IBM equipment and follow a more or less uniform system of recording and punching accident data on cards for machine analysis. In most respects the trends in this development have been very desirable but standardization is sometimes a virtue which may occasionally boomerang. After a system is once established it takes a great deal of effort to make a change and changes are frequently desirable. Standardization may …

An Analysis Of Reading Improvement, Lewis R. Vavra Jan 1951

An Analysis Of Reading Improvement, Lewis R. Vavra

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It has been established by different investigators that a positive correlation exists between intelligence and reading speed. Humber (1944) found a correlation of +.76 between reading rate and ACE scores of University of Minnesota students. A study by Anderson and Dearborn (1941) shows that reading ability and college achievement are often closely related. Data were available from several classes of a reading improvement course, and it was considered worthwhile to analyze the data to ascertain which decile groups were profiting most by training. The fundamental hypothesis set up for testing in this study may be stated as follows: There is …

An Empirical Study Of The Effect Of Normalizing Data [Abstract], C. C. Collins, A. R. Lauer Jan 1951

An Empirical Study Of The Effect Of Normalizing Data [Abstract], C. C. Collins, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of normalization of data is frequently discussed in the literature but few studies have been made to determine the actual effect produced when normalized and non-normalized data are compared. In this study two types of distributions were studied in which correlations are made between certain data with and without correction for skewness and kurtosis. The correlations, plots and curves of the material, and the changes created will be presented and discussed. It would seem that in most cases the benefits of normalizing data are hardly worth while since curvilinearity and breaks in data induce sources of error which …

Age And Sex Difference In Performance In The O'Connor Blocks, R. N. Kjerland Jan 1951

Age And Sex Difference In Performance In The O'Connor Blocks, R. N. Kjerland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Kean and O'Connor (1927) reported the use of the O'Connor Blocks as a measure of mechanical aptitude. A study of the data indicated that superior performance was associated with a type of analysis characteristic of engineers and mechanics. In recent years the test has been used to some extent in the field of driver training and driver aptitude measurement. A study reported by Miller and Lauer (1946) with a group consisting largely of Oriental students gave low positive correlation with driving performance. The criterion used was not as reliable as the experimenters desired.

Some Social Correlates Of Intellectual Changes, Dale Ortmeyer, William A. Owens Jr. Jan 1951

Some Social Correlates Of Intellectual Changes, Dale Ortmeyer, William A. Owens Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As a result of considerable psychological investigation in the field of individual differences, Tyler (3) and others have stated that social factors, such as amount of education, are related to mental abilities. This statement suggested the possibility that social factors may be related to changes in mental abilities over a chronological age span. The knowledge of social correlates, if any, of the changes in mental abilities is an important preliminary step for further research designed to determine causation. Due to the lack of information in the literature concerning this relationship, it was believed worthwhile to conduct a longitudinal study directly …

Work Decrements In The Performance Of A Pursuit Task Arising From Relatively Short Periods Of Massed Practice, Abram Barch Jan 1951

Work Decrements In The Performance Of A Pursuit Task Arising From Relatively Short Periods Of Massed Practice, Abram Barch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a series of articles beginning in 1948, Kimble attempted to extend two constructs of the Hullian system to the realm of motor learning. These constructs were reactive inhibition (IR) and conditioned inhibition (SIR). Definition and Measurement. Reactive inhibition was conceived of as a response-produced need state, a need to stop responding, which accompanies all behavior and which dissipates with rest. The effect of reactive inhibition on the learning process is to reduce the work-output level of the organism and thus to obscure the actual strength of the habit. Kimble postulated that the accumulation of a …

The Scotometer - A Dark-Tunnel Apparatus For Studying Night Vision Of Drivers, Harold I. Stalder, Donald A. Hoppe, A. R. Lauer Jan 1951

The Scotometer - A Dark-Tunnel Apparatus For Studying Night Vision Of Drivers, Harold I. Stalder, Donald A. Hoppe, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lauer and Silver (1941) described a special dark room for studying acuity and visual discrimination under low levels of illumination. The length of the room was about 20 feet, thus precluding certain measurements where greater distances were required. The test objects were also stationary allowing only for measurements being made at a fixed distance. In connection with a recent study (1951) on perception of changes in relative distance and in variations thereof, it was necessary to construct a device which would not only give a greater distance potential, but which would allow for variations in speed of approach or recession …

Comparison Of Form And Color Fields, Harold V. Gaskill Jr., Albert G. Rostenbach, Robert M. Thompson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many studies have been made of the color fields of the eye and some consideration has been given the form fields. With the invention of the microscope by Leeuwenhoeck in 1722, who first made a study of the retina of the frog, much interest has been shown in the structure and functions of the retina. Some of the world's greatest histologists such as Cajal, Mueller and others have studied the structural characteristics of the retina. Very little attention has been given the functions of the retina from the point of view of psychology.

Statements Of Cynicism Rated By College Students, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1951

Statements Of Cynicism Rated By College Students, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The investigation of cynicism by means of testing procedures has been described before the Psychology Section of the Iowa Academy of Science at previous meetings (see references). This paper is a report of a further study of cynicism using the sixty-five items of the short-form of the so-called Practical Policy Test (3). The problem was to determine how strongly cynical these items would be considered to be when the subject does not think of them as applying to himself but attempts to evaluate them "objectively". In other words, what statements are considered by college students as expressing the most intense …

Rate Of Manipulative Learning As A Function Of Goal-Setting Techniques, Gerald C. Helmstadter, Douglas S. Ellis Jan 1951

Rate Of Manipulative Learning As A Function Of Goal-Setting Techniques, Gerald C. Helmstadter, Douglas S. Ellis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although most studies involving the use of goals as motivators in learning have been concerned with which types of goals produce the greatest improvement, there have been some indications that the method of presenting a given type of goal may determine its effectiveness.

Some Components Of Mechanical Composition, Gilbert E. Miller Jan 1951

Some Components Of Mechanical Composition, Gilbert E. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the search for unitary mental traits it appears that the answer may not be finite. In view of this conclusion on the part of several investigators (2), the writer suggests the probability that psychological tests intended to measure ability in a specified area may contain a number of psychological components. As mechanical comprehension is one of the important areas of psychological testing, the writer believes that determination of the components of this area would be of great value.

An Apparatus For Measuring Reaction Time Under Conditions Of Preoccupation, Richard E. Frey Jan 1951

An Apparatus For Measuring Reaction Time Under Conditions Of Preoccupation, Richard E. Frey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It seems axiomatic that visual, auditory, or other stimuli are not raced to as quickly when the observer is preoccupied. Students of accident prevention have pointed out that laboratory measures of re· action time are not representative of everyday life situations where preoccupation and distractions present an entirely different situation from that of controlled laboratory conditions. The present apparatus was designed to measure various response times under controlled conditions, both with and without preoccupation

The Role Of Albedo In Color Discrimination Of Spider Monkeys, Robert Q. Easter, Daryl G. Nichols Jan 1951

The Role Of Albedo In Color Discrimination Of Spider Monkeys, Robert Q. Easter, Daryl G. Nichols

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of color discrimination of animals has been variously discussed by writers. While it is generally conceded that the cones are the receptors of color, the different theories of vision as expounded by Young and Helmholtz, Hering, Ladd-Franklin and others are not always in essential agreement that specific cones are the receptors of specific wave lengths of light. While form discrimination of rats has been clearly demonstrated in the researches of Fields, Fritz, Lashley and others, the discrimination of color by the lower forms of animals is not so well established. Writers also differ as to primates, but since …

Periodicities In Motor Performance As A Function Of Work-Surface Height, Douglas S. Ellis Jan 1951

Periodicities In Motor Performance As A Function Of Work-Surface Height, Douglas S. Ellis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although motor learning is generally assumed to be an orderly process, the observed performance curves of individuals and groups of individuals are usually rather irregular with observed points falling both above and below the general trend of the curve. This conflict between theory and observation has typically been resolved by attributing such variations to the chance operation of uncontrolled variables. However, a recent theory describes a mechanism by which such variations might occur. The present paper extends this theory to the problem of performance variability, and presents an analysis of performance curves obtained under two conditions of work-surface height to …

Differential Interests Of Agricultural College Students As Measured By The Kuder Preference Record, John A. Bath Jan 1950

Differential Interests Of Agricultural College Students As Measured By The Kuder Preference Record, John A. Bath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Kuder Preference Record has enjoyed wide usage as a counselor's aid in determining categorical interests of individuals. Many studies have been made in an attempt to discover differential interests of occupational groups and of those engaged in the pursuit of various college curricula. Such significant differences in interests as are found have been deemed to be of valuable assistance to the vocational and educational counselor. So far as the writer has been able to discover, little use has been made of the Kuder Preference Record in the measurement of interests of college students pursuing an agricultural curriculum. This may …

Response Of Veterinarians To The Strong Vocational Interest Blank For Men, Thomas E. Hannum Jan 1950

Response Of Veterinarians To The Strong Vocational Interest Blank For Men, Thomas E. Hannum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The selection of students for the veterinary college at Iowa State College has become a real problem. Every year several times the enrollment capacity applies for entrance, and from this large group the few who are to be allowed admission must be carefully selected. In selecting these students, chief reliance has been placed on past scholastic records, both high school and pre-professional training in college, and upon various measures of scholastic aptitude. At present, a veterinary aptitude test is being developed by W. A. Owens of the Department of Psychology and L. C. Payne, School of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State …
