A Study Of What 1,085 Parents Think Of Selected Areas Of Mason City Public School Education, Evan Dale Foster Jan 1953

A Study Of What 1,085 Parents Think Of Selected Areas Of Mason City Public School Education, Evan Dale Foster

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The public school was established to educate youth; and the state has delegated responsibility to school boards, administrators, and teachers for the accomplishment of this end. While the citizens through their representatives create school laws the local community retains many means for determining the program of its own public school. Thus it would seem highly desirable for public school personnel to know the opinions held by the parents about various parts of the school program.

The Character Of Robinson Jeffers: A Study In “Inhumanism”, Betty Jean Evans Jan 1953

The Character Of Robinson Jeffers: A Study In “Inhumanism”, Betty Jean Evans

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

When one reads many of the long narrative poems of Robinson Jeffers, one wonders at the characters who act out their lives against a backdrop of the contemporary California coastal region. The characters live isolated lives as ranchers, farmers, and farm women; they go about the business of eking out an existence, of cultivating their land, of caring for their livestock. Often, they commit horrible, unnatural acts and always, they or their families are involved in episodes which result in death or injury. Although these characters do not have the stature of an Oedipus or a Medea, their lives and …

Sex Differences And Reliabilities On Two Tests Of Distance Judgment, James A. Stone, Lewis R. Vavra Jan 1952

Sex Differences And Reliabilities On Two Tests Of Distance Judgment, James A. Stone, Lewis R. Vavra

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

There are relatively few studies on distance judgment cited in the psychological literature. Allgaier (1) developed a test of depth perception involving movable pegs. He found that color and size of the pegs had little effect on judgments. However, induced visual defects and astigmatism materially decrease the ability to judge distance. Visual acuity seems to be the only factor reported which is significantly correlated with distance judgment.

The Validity Of A Pencil And Paper Version Of The O'Connor Block Test [Abstract], J. J. Phillips, M. C. Green, R. N. Kjerland Jan 1952

The Validity Of A Pencil And Paper Version Of The O'Connor Block Test [Abstract], J. J. Phillips, M. C. Green, R. N. Kjerland

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The senior author has previously shown that the O'Connor Block Test requires at least four time-limit trials of two minutes each to obtain a reliability of .80. A total of six trials are required to bring the reliability up to .85. If the number of subjects to be tested is large this procedure requires a large amount of the examiner's time and somewhat limits the usefulness of the test.

Exploratory Study Of The Spearman Rank Formula For Use In Item-Analysis [Abstract], C. S. Schumacher, A. R. Lauer Jan 1952

Exploratory Study Of The Spearman Rank Formula For Use In Item-Analysis [Abstract], C. S. Schumacher, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Practically all other types of correlation methods have been used to evaluate items both for internal consistency and against an external criterion. Likewise criticisms have been leveled against most of the methods commonly used on several grounds. The authors present a method of item analysis based upon the conventional rank-formula in which the criterion is divided into nine groups. Five and seven groups were found unsatisfactory. Comparisons with certain other methods will be presented when criterion data are grouped into nine groups. The method has certain advantages not found in other methods and evaluation of it will be made. The …

Probability Of Success In Business Mathematics, Earle L. Canfield Jan 1952

Probability Of Success In Business Mathematics, Earle L. Canfield

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the problems of frequent concern to educators is that of predicting achievement of students so that both potentially superior and slow students can be identified early in a course for the purpose of giving adequate attention to such cases. The general method of the procedure to be discussed here might be applicable to many situations, but it is especially applicable in mathematics.

The Effect Of Initial Massing Of Practice On The Transfer Task In A Proactive Interference Situation, Abram M. Barch Jan 1952

The Effect Of Initial Massing Of Practice On The Transfer Task In A Proactive Interference Situation, Abram M. Barch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Virtually all motor learning studies have shown spaced practice to be superior to massed practice. Most of the apparent exceptions, such as the work of Cook, involve tasks in which symbolic responses play a dominant role - such tasks as spider mazes, punch board mazes, mechanical puzzles, etc. (1, 2). The few remaining exceptions are studies in which the term "spaced practice" is a misnomer. That is, the performance of the so-called "spaced" groups was affected as much by the inhibitory effects of work decrement as was the performance of the massed practice groups (3).

Behavior Associated With Age And Audiogenic Seizures In An Inbred Strain Of Mice, Wayne C. Bruce Jan 1952

Behavior Associated With Age And Audiogenic Seizures In An Inbred Strain Of Mice, Wayne C. Bruce

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Behavior disorders or so-called "experimental neuroses" have been observed by many investigators in a variety of species. Finger1 indicates that convulsive behavior has been studied experimentally in such mammals as the cat, dog, mouse, rabbit and pig. Hall and Martin2 refer to behavior disorders in the chimpanzee and rat. So far as is known only rats and mice have been found susceptible to audiogenic seizures. It has been found that abnormal behavior may be elicited by a variety of stimuli such as conflict, sound, electric shock, drugs, and ·dietary deficiency. Although the literature appears to indicate that a …

A Composite Driving Inventory [Abstract], A. R. Lauer Jan 1952

A Composite Driving Inventory [Abstract], A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Previous studies have shown a number of factors to be moderately correlated with accident records and other criterion of driving performance. Among these are knowledge of driving, attitudes towards traffic, experience and certain personality characteristics. It is hypothesized that a composite of these categories using selected items should raise the predictive value of such an instrument. Consequently a type of inventory has been assembled from several selected categories of known reliability and validity into a composite form of 163 items covering certain aspects of personal history, experience, preferences and attitudes. Methods of scoring will he presented along with certain preliminary …

Personality Changes In College Women During Four Years Of College Experience, Alice L. Palubinskas Jan 1952

Personality Changes In College Women During Four Years Of College Experience, Alice L. Palubinskas

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Changes in the personality test scores of a group of college women over an interval of approximately four years were investigated. During the fall quarter of 1947 three hundred forty-four freshmen women in the Home Economics Division of Iowa State College were given Darley and McNamara's Minnesota Personality Scale. During the winter of 1951 ninety-one of these women were retested with the same personality scale. The retested group included students who were still enrolled at Iowa State College and who submitted to the retesting.

"Verbal Factor" And "Number Factor"A Study Of Two Tests, John E. Williams, C. D'A. Gerken Jan 1952

"Verbal Factor" And "Number Factor"A Study Of Two Tests, John E. Williams, C. D'A. Gerken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The psychologist working as a counselor in a student personnel office has come to depend upon psvchometric data to sharpen the reliability and validity of his judgments. Although he is cautious about trusting test labels, and well aware of the unwritten caveat accompanying each test manual, every once in a while the counselor may be brought up short by the summation effect of discrepancies he notices in day-to-day work with test data. The present study had its origin in just this fashion. It grew out of attempts of counselors to extract the maximum amount of meaningful information from test data.

Performance On A Motor Task Under Differential Amounts Of Physical Induced Tension, Howard H. Mcfann Jan 1952

Performance On A Motor Task Under Differential Amounts Of Physical Induced Tension, Howard H. Mcfann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The present study was concerned with the influence of different amounts of experimentally induced muscular tension on performance of a motor task. Following the pioneer investigations by Bills (1), a number of studies utilizing tasks under various techniques of inducing tension have attempted to test his general conclusion that tension facilitates performance. McGeoch (9) and Courts (5) present excellent summaries of the studies concerned and, in general, the evidence cited agrees with Stauffacher (11) who on the basis of his own work and early studies, stated the hypothesis that there is an amount of tension which is optimal for learning …

The Effects Of A Thirty Year Age Increment Upon Individual And Trait Differences In Intelligence, W. A. Owens, Richard R. Clampitt Jan 1952

The Effects Of A Thirty Year Age Increment Upon Individual And Trait Differences In Intelligence, W. A. Owens, Richard R. Clampitt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As implied, the problem of the present investigation was to estimate the effects of a thirty-year age increment upon individual and trait differences in eight measurable mental functions.

Number Of Responses And Rate Of Responding To A Voluntary Rest Pause As A Function Of Response Effortfulness, Robert F. Boldt, Douglas S. Ellis Jan 1952

Number Of Responses And Rate Of Responding To A Voluntary Rest Pause As A Function Of Response Effortfulness, Robert F. Boldt, Douglas S. Ellis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent studies by Eckstrand (1) and Ellis, Montgomery, and Underwood (2) have been concerned with the effects of effortfulness on performance and reminiscence. Eckstrand varied the amount of spring tension against which the stylus had to be depressed in the pursuit rotor task, while Ellis, Montgomery, and Underwood varied the work-surface height of a block-turning task. In both studies, the effortful manipulation failed to depress performance.

Science Talent Searches, F. E. Brown Jan 1952

Science Talent Searches, F. E. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1948 the American Association for the Advancement of Science asked the cooperating academies of science in the several states to encourage larger numbers of qualified students to major in science. Seeking youth for special important service is one of the oldest activities of organized society. The Incas found beautiful maidens whose sacrifice appeased an angry god. The Babylonians trained even their abler captives such as Daniel and his friends for administrative positions. Schools have been founded to train, without charge or for small fees, preachers, lawyers, physicians and teachers as need for such training was evident.
