Toward Curricular Congruence In Classroom And Remedial Reading Through Strategies For Transition, Linda Suttle Mcclure Jan 1988

Toward Curricular Congruence In Classroom And Remedial Reading Through Strategies For Transition, Linda Suttle Mcclure

Graduate Research Papers

One of our greatest challenges in education today is to provide the most effective education possible for children and youth with learning problems. In the past two decades, efforts to meet this challenge have produced an abundance of federally funded programs designed to meet the educational needs of these children. "Special," "compensatory," and "remedial" education programs for children with learning, language, reading, and math problems have been established in virtually every school district in the nation as a means to contribute to the goal of quality education. The National Commission on Excellence in Education indicated a strong concern over problems …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Model For Implementing Restitution Into The Disciplinary Procedures Of Secondary Public Schools, Garry Leroy Jensen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to develop a model for implementing restitution into the disciplinary procedures of secondary public schools. The model was designed to encourage self-discipline, improve decision-making, promote self-esteem and provide for reconciliation. The concept of restitution upon which the model was based is as follows:

If you have wronged someone, it is your responsibility to make it right with that person and to your community as a whole by positive constructive acts and it is your further responsibility to improve yourself with personal accomplishments and goals. (Challeen, 1982)

Using language of systems analysis, a flow chart …

The Predictive Validity Of The Primary Mental Abilities Test, Jerry Wilde Jan 1988

The Predictive Validity Of The Primary Mental Abilities Test, Jerry Wilde

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to assess the predictive validity of the Primary Mental Abilities Test (PMA). Subjects were administered the PMA in the fall of 1972 and again in the spring of 1973 to determine if the additional months of schooling had produced achievement gains. In this study, only the fall pre-test scores were used. Of the 385 students in thirteen Iowa school districts who participated in the original study, 26 agreed to allow the use of their Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) scores in this follow-up study. These ITBS scores were correlated with PMA scores in grades 3, …

The Measurement Of Sex Role Identification: An Examination Of The Internal Consistency Of The Bem Sex Role Inventory And Its Relevance To Sex Role Therapy, Roger J. Eich Jan 1988

The Measurement Of Sex Role Identification: An Examination Of The Internal Consistency Of The Bem Sex Role Inventory And Its Relevance To Sex Role Therapy, Roger J. Eich

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study's primary focus is an empirical analysis of the Bem Sex-role Inventory (BSRI). This sex-role inventory has been heralded by many in the social sciences and has received wide acceptance. It has not, however, been without its critics. Specifically, Bem's scale has been criticized for failing to adequately protect against response tendency, for the inclusion of some of the masculine, feminine, and social desirability traits, and for claiming to measure the specific, orthogonal dimensions of masculinity and femininity. Other methodological shortcomings have been noted by various researchers, but the three listed above appear to be the most prominent. Background …

An Analysis Of Research Studies Comparing Self-Contained To Departmentalized Classroom Organizational Plans For Fifth And Sixth Graders, Dennie L. Webb Jan 1988

An Analysis Of Research Studies Comparing Self-Contained To Departmentalized Classroom Organizational Plans For Fifth And Sixth Graders, Dennie L. Webb

Graduate Research Papers

Research comparing departmentalized-types of classroom organizational plans to self-contained classroom plans for fifth and sixth grade students was studied. The most current research available on the topic was compiled in one paper to help guide educators when making:decisions about changing the organizational plan of their school. The research was collected from educational journals and doctoral dissertations. The research suggests that in the area of academic achievement the self-contained classroom may be superior. Many teachers and most students prefer the departmentalized classrooms. Schools should move slowly in changing from self-contained to departmentalized classrooms until more current research has been done.

Principles Associated With The Theory Of Whole Language And Barriers Which Affect Its Use, Sara Elizabeth Hegg Jan 1988

Principles Associated With The Theory Of Whole Language And Barriers Which Affect Its Use, Sara Elizabeth Hegg

Graduate Research Papers

There is a great need for teachers to be up-to-date in regard to theory and research in education. The exposure teachers have to new theories and practices enables them to reflect on their present teaching beliefs and methods. However, reports on research show that change in educational philosophies or procedures has not always fared well in the past and as a result new ideas are not always well received (Altwerger, Edelsky, and Flores, 1987). Indeed, change is hard, and educators often hold on to the way things are because of a fear that the change may not be positive. Educators …

Early Writing In The Kindergarten Classroom, Agnes Grevstad Hjelle Jan 1988

Early Writing In The Kindergarten Classroom, Agnes Grevstad Hjelle

Graduate Research Papers

Learning to read and learning to write are related processes which deal with printed symbols (Hall, Moretz, & Statom, 1986). In 1980 Glenda Bissex published GNYS AT WRK: A Child Learns to Write and Read. Bissex chose to focus on how her child treated himself as a writer. In her observation of her son she found that reading was integrally involved in his becoming a writer. When children write they read their own texts and they consequently monitor their production. A dynamic relationship exists between writing and reading because each influences the other in the course of development (Ferreiro & …

The Elementary Guidance Counselor: An Essential Part Of Elementary Education, Sharon L. Tessman Jan 1988

The Elementary Guidance Counselor: An Essential Part Of Elementary Education, Sharon L. Tessman

Graduate Research Papers

Education is a social process. Human interaction is the single most important ingredient in education. Most human behaviors are learned. They develop as a consequence of persons interacting with their environment. The type of person we are is determined by the interactions we have with other human beings. When teaching a child, educators must interact with the total individual; this has become known as teaching the "total child". Education can no longer deal singly with the teaching of subject content, as has been the practice in the past. This method has not produced adults who are prepared to meet the …

Graduate Research Papers

Cross-cultural contacts are easier and more convenient because technological developments have shortened the distance between countries. The third world countries demand advanced technological and industrialized knowledge and skills to develop their countries. Therefore, they send a large number of students to highly developed countries to absorb their invaluable scientific experiences. In particular, the third world countries send a large number of students to the United States because of its leading position in technology, advanced economic development and democratic leadership.

The Effects Of Individualized Instruction On The Affective Responses Of Fifth Grade Students Toward Mathematics, Diane Mccarty Jan 1988

The Effects Of Individualized Instruction On The Affective Responses Of Fifth Grade Students Toward Mathematics, Diane Mccarty

Graduate Research Papers

Instructional efforts that attempt to adapt to individual differences have existed for many years. The formal development of individual instructional programs in America started in the later decades of the last century as opposition to the age-graded, systematic manner in which all students, regardless of differences among them, were confined to study the same materials in the same way for the same length of time (Gibbons, 1971). Although most instruction has continued in the tradition of the whole-class, graded system, an increasing number of programs that have made education more amenable to differences among students have been developed. Many of …

Effect Of Selected Cognitive Factors And Cognitive Restructuring On Weight Control, Jeanne A. Brassfield Jan 1988

Effect Of Selected Cognitive Factors And Cognitive Restructuring On Weight Control, Jeanne A. Brassfield

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to review and synthesize the available body of research literature concerning selected cognitive factors and cognitive restructuring for weight loss and maintenance. Three cognitive factors: feelings of control and perceived ability to succeed, value of health and perceived susceptibility to disease, and perceived ability to cope with stress appear to be particularly influential in weight loss and maintenance. These variables, in and by themselves, however, have not empirically remedied the obesity dilemma and new approaches are being investigated in hopes of producing long-term weight control success. Such innovative strategies include a combination of cognitive …

Organizational Stress Management And Resulting Role Implications For The Organizational Health Promotion Professional, Laurinda K. Young

Graduate Research Papers

Organizational stress significantly impacts on U.S. businesses and has been identified as being responsible for a high percentage of employee absenteeism, turnover, health claims, decreased productivity and low morale. Estimates of the direct and indirect costs of stressrelated dysfunction within this sector are between $100 and $150 billion per year. Organizations are increasingly concerned about the impact of stress on individual and corporate health and are implementing a wide variety of stress management programs. At this point, however, few companies are able to demonstrate that stress management programs are effective.

The purpose of this paper was to review and synthesize …

The Evolution Of Iowa's Intermediate Educational Unit And Its Influence On The Delivery Of Special Education: A Historical Perspective, Christopher Anthony Kleve

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Iowa has developed a unique regional intermediate education system known as Area Education Agencies (AEAs). The AEAs provide local school districts with special education programs and services, media services, and other education services. The AEAs have existed since July 1, 1975 after the passage of Senate File 1163 in 1974. The AEAs were not the first intermediate educational units in Iowa. In 1858 the state legislature created the office of the county superintendent to serve as intermediate link between the local schools and the office of the state superintendent. From the first decade of the 20th century, the role of …

An Analysis Of Historical Studies Of Literacy Standards From Three Epochs In American Elementary Education, Karen Elizabeth Stinson Hanus Jan 1988

An Analysis Of Historical Studies Of Literacy Standards From Three Epochs In American Elementary Education, Karen Elizabeth Stinson Hanus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The task of determining the standards of literacy in an historical epoch, the accurate assessment of children's ability to read, and the achievement of universal literacy are like the impossible endeavor of Tantalus in Greek mythology. As one comes closer to achieving one's goal, it changes and moves further away, forever just out of reach. So it is in trying to ascertain absolutes in the field of literacy. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to demonstrate that one definition of literacy is not possible because literacy standards depend upon historical context.

Prominent selected historians' studies of literacy were examined …

The Influence Of Students' Social Class Status Upon Secondary School Counselors' Judgments About Students' Potential For College Attendance, Judith Ann Schindler Jan 1988

The Influence Of Students' Social Class Status Upon Secondary School Counselors' Judgments About Students' Potential For College Attendance, Judith Ann Schindler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine the extent to which students' social class origins influence guidance counselors' judgments about students’ potential for college work. Forty experienced practicing high school guidance counselors from a Midwestern state participated. Each participant read nine vignettes each describing a fictitious eleventh grade boy and containing information regarding his social class, achievement, career interest, and stated desire to attain college or postsecondary education. (Half the participants received vignettes indicating that advisees desired college education; the others received vignettes indicating advisees' more general desire to attain postsecondary education.) Three of the nine advisees were …

Factors Associated With The Relationship Between Juvenile Delinquency And Adult Criminality: A Sample Of State Training School Residents In Iowa, Kristin Renae Baughman Jan 1988

Factors Associated With The Relationship Between Juvenile Delinquency And Adult Criminality: A Sample Of State Training School Residents In Iowa, Kristin Renae Baughman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is unclear what the relationship is between juvenile delinquency and adult criminality. Many people assume that an individual who commits several crimes as a juvenile will also commit crimes as an adult, yet most juvenile offenders do not become adult offenders. It is also unclear what role institutionalization of juvenile delinquents plays in arresting or intensifying criminal careers. Some reappear in the adult correctional system while others become lawful citizens. The current study looks at one set of the most serious juvenile delinquents, those placed in a state training school in Iowa. In order to determine the relationship between …

Specifically, measures of competitor self-efficacy and measures of judge perceptions of competitor self-efficacy were compared. The subjects for the study were collegiate individual events competitors and judges. Subjects were competing and judging in the events of sales speaking, prose interpretation and informative speaking. The study hypothesized that a positive significant correlation would exist between competitor self-efficacy and judge perception of that efficacy. This hypothesis was tested through administration of questionnaires to competitors and judges. These questionnaires were based on …

A Case Study Of The Effect Of Aids On The Physical, Social, Emotional, Sexual, And Spiritual Health Of One Person With Aids, Nancy D. Galloway Jan 1988

A Case Study Of The Effect Of Aids On The Physical, Social, Emotional, Sexual, And Spiritual Health Of One Person With Aids, Nancy D. Galloway

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research is a case study of a former IV drug user, male, aged 37, who was diagnosed with AIDS two years previous to the beginning of the study. The subject and five individuals from his family and close circle were interviewed to investigate, assess, and evaluate how the experience of contracting AIDS had impacted his physical, social, emotional, sexual, and spiritual health. Open-ended interviews covering the five dimensions of health were conducted, and a 10-point Likert scale was employed from a before-and-after AIDS perspective. Results of analysis of statistical data showed a significant decrease (< .0005) in physical health of the subject and a significant increase (< .005) in his spiritual health. Sexual health was reported to have the greatest standard deviation. Qualitative analysis of the interview data indicated the subject had experienced growth in the social and emotional dimensions of health, but this was not confirmed by analysis of statistical data.
