Graduate Research Papers

Since 1983, when The National Commission on Excellence in Education (1984) presented its report, A Nation at Risk, educators in the United States have been involved in widespread reform to improve American public education. By 1987 the Commission reported that at least 40 states had increased the number of academic courses required for a high school diploma, 32 states had changed curriculum standards, and 23 states had taken steps to increase the time that students spend in learning. Mitchell (1986) reported a 350% increase in state funding of programs for gifted students since 1977, and Cross (1987) stated that 50 …

Subjects completed a 100-question survey, developed by Phi Delta Kappa International, which assessed their beliefs and attitudes toward specific learning factors and behaviors of students, specific problems students confront outside of school, student abilities, and teaching strategies. Treatment included descriptive statistics, correlational analysis, and oneway analysis of …

Personality Style And Newly Amplified Hearing-Impaired Adults, Teresa A. Walker Jan 1989

Personality Style And Newly Amplified Hearing-Impaired Adults, Teresa A. Walker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There were two purposes of this research. First, the personality characteristics of the newly amplified hearing-impaired adult were examined. Second, the effect of the combination of the individual's knowledge of their personality type and their use of the hearing aid on their perception of hearing handicap was investigated. The need for an individualized approach to aural rehabilitation has been repeatedly stressed (Alpiner, 1982a; McCarthy & Alpiner, 1982). The understanding of individual personality types would be a step in the development of remedial programs that are adapted to the individual. There is little information that describes the newly amplified hearing impaired …

A visual cue was utilized to assist in generalization and the subject's behavior was monitored outside of the treatment setting. The subject was a ten year old mentally deficient female who engaged in a self-injurious stereotypy involving the picking of skin from her fingers and hands. An ABAC single-subject design was utilized and the subject's behavior was monitored in her classroom on mornings following treatment. The treatment procedure was unsuccessful in reducing the frequency of the behavior and no …

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept: A Construct Validity Study, Tracy A. Randall Jan 1989

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept: A Construct Validity Study, Tracy A. Randall

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Researchers tend to agree that self-concept has an influence on the total development of the child (Briggs, 1970). Stanton (1982) suggests that educators should find ways to encourage internality in students' control orientations. Extensive research has been conducted on the constructs of locus of control and self-concept. Some research studies report interesting results concerning a dimension of self-concept--academic self-concept or self-concept as a learner--(Purkey, Raheim, & Cage, 1983; Purkey, 1970; Benner, Frey, & Gilberts, 1983).

The purpose of this study was to explore the construct independence between locus of control and learner self-concept in students at the tenth grade level. …

Determining The Contributions Of The Intrapersonal Factors Of Personality Disposition, Ability, And Attitude To Precompetitive State Anxiety, Jacquelyn Rae Wright

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative contributions of personality disposition (competitive A-trait), ability (skill level), and attitude (perceived ability, confidence, self-esteem) to state anxiety prior to competition. It was hypothesized that personality disposition (competitive A-trait) would be the strongest predictor of competitive state anxiety prior to competition.

Forty-two Luther College women basketball and softball players were selected for participation in the study. The Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT) was used to assess A-trait. The Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2) was used to assess three subcomponents of precompetitive state anxiety (cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence). This …

Trait Competitiveness Of Starters And Non-Starters In N.C.A.A. Division I Basketball, Curtis Harold Gunnink

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine trait competitiveness in N.C.A.A. Division I male basketball players to determine if a significant difference could be found between starters and non-starters. It was hypothesized that players that usually start (starters) a game will have higher trait competitiveness scores than players that usually do not start (non-starters) a game.

The design of this research project was quasi-experimental. The independent variable was whether the subject was a starter or a nonstarter on a N.C.A.A. Division I basketball team. The dependent variable was trait competitiveness as measured by the Sport Orientation Questionnaire (SOQ) (Gill …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was conducted to collect information about program design and patient population of self-founded and sports club sponsored coronary groups in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). Furthermore, the study attempted to investigate structural and functional differences and similarities between the groups in regard to patient adherence. Areas of particular interest were community size, risk factor prevalence, and strategies that have been identified in the literature to increase patient adherence to exercise programs.

A mailed questionnare [sic] was sent out in March 1989 to 54 sports club sponsored and 48 self-founded coronary groups which were randomly selected from a …

The Effects Of Sign Language Upon The Fast-Mapping Abilities Of Autistic Children, Maria Trese Cashman Jan 1989

The Effects Of Sign Language Upon The Fast-Mapping Abilities Of Autistic Children, Maria Trese Cashman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Fast-mapping is the process of storing information in memory about a newly encountered lexical item after only one or very few encounters with the word. Best (1986) investigated the fast-mapping abilities of autistic, mentally retarded, and normal adolescents. The results revealed that fast-mapping occurs in the autistic population. It was unknown, however, whether the presence of a visual sign stimulus would assist autistic individuals in the fast-mapping process. The purpose of the present research was to study the effects of sign stimuli on the word learning abilities of autistic children. Two autistic subjects between the ages of 11 and 12 …
