Adult Children Of Alcoholics, Nancy Swords Hendrickson Jan 1989

Adult Children Of Alcoholics, Nancy Swords Hendrickson

Graduate Research Papers

An estimated 25 to 28 million children and adults in the United States grew up, or are presently living in alcoholic homes (Ackerman, 1983). Children from alcoholic homes frequently develop defenses similar to those found in children who have been raised in homes with a high degree of chronic stress. Fear of abandonment or loss also causes these children to exert unrealistic control over the uncertainties of life, and they tend to have an omnipotent belief in the ability to control events which are beyond their control. Also there are predictable grief reactions which have been observed in therapy as …

The Portrayal Of Child Abuse In Children’S Literature, Stephanie P. Marsland Jan 1989

The Portrayal Of Child Abuse In Children’S Literature, Stephanie P. Marsland

Graduate Research Papers

This research study was conducted to determine how child abuse was portrayed in fiction literature for children in Kindergarten through 6th grade. Sixteen novels published in or after 1978 were analyzed. All of the titles were located through the use of selective bibliographies and were positively reviewed in Booklist or School Library Journal. The novels focused on the victims of child abuse who were at least one of the main characters and who spent at least part of the book in the abusive environment.

Psychological, physical, and sexual abuse and neglect were all evident in the children's novels, with psychological …

The Status Of Empathetic Listening Instruction For Conflict Management In Iowa's Teacher Education Institutions, Patricia A. Downs

Graduate Research Papers

It is the purpose of this paper to explore literature that discusses empathic listening as an effective tool for conflict management. Further, this study surveys current empathic listening instruction in Iowa's teacher-preparation institutions. The basis for this research focuses on the following questions: (1) Does the literature suggest a link between empathic listening and conflict management? (2) Does the literature suggest effective methods for empathic listening instruction? and (3) What instructional methods for empathic listening are currently utilized in teacher-training programs?

Punishment To Discipline: Evolution Or An Alternative Method, Gwendolyn Johnson Jan 1989

Punishment To Discipline: Evolution Or An Alternative Method, Gwendolyn Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

Walter Dick and Lou Carey (1985) wrote about the two different views of the role of the teacher. The role of the teacher is to effectively instruct students. No instructor would deny that the tools of the trade fall into the categories of preparation, presentation and evaluation. The role of the student is to learn what is being taught. Traditionally the burden of the effectiveness of this relationship has been placed on the instructor. However this view is changing because, it doesn't matter how great a subject matter expert a teacher becomes or how well they've mastered their educational technique …

Home Schooling: Why Some Parents Of Gifted Children Are Choosing It As An Alternative To The Public School, Patricia C. Seamans Jan 1989

Home Schooling: Why Some Parents Of Gifted Children Are Choosing It As An Alternative To The Public School, Patricia C. Seamans

Graduate Research Papers

Home schooling and special programs for gifted children emerged as separate issues in the late 1970s and 1980s. Naisbitt (1982) identifies home schooling as one of the examples of the megatrend away from institutional help and toward self help ln the 80s. A sign of educators' interest in the topic is noted by the fact that 85% of the research done concerning the success of home schooling has been done in the 1980s. Meanwhile, by their own choice or by state mandate, many public schools have implemented programs to serve the gifted in their district. Ignorance of the facts about …

Extending A Sense Of Story Through Retelling Experiences In A Unit On Historical Fiction, Wendy Snitker Jan 1989

Extending A Sense Of Story Through Retelling Experiences In A Unit On Historical Fiction, Wendy Snitker

Graduate Research Papers

Literacy can be defined as the ability to make use of all available possibilities of written language to create meaning (Smith, 1983). With this definition in mind, a teacher finds support in developing a learning environment in which children can encounter a whole array of opportunities to extend their reading and writing abilities. A nurturing environment allows children to bring their experiences to reading and writing in order to engage in predicting and risk taking which is what comprehension and composition of written materials is all about. Then they can acquire basic insights into written language: Print needs to be …

Acceleration As A Qualitatively Differentiated Educational Program For The Highly Gifted Learner: Its Positive And Negative Effects, Jann Weitzel Jan 1989

Acceleration As A Qualitatively Differentiated Educational Program For The Highly Gifted Learner: Its Positive And Negative Effects, Jann Weitzel

Graduate Research Papers

The provision of special educational opportunities for the most gifted members of our society is not a new idea. As early as the Fourth Century, B.C., Plato remarked in his Republic that society's task was "to compel the best natures" to provide education in order to ensure the survival of Greek democracy. The common good would best be served, he felt, by providing educational advantages for the most distinguished learners in order for them to eventually assume leadership positions. Such a desire for the optimum development of gifted potential has been an underlying reason for the return of the pendulum …

Bibliotherapy: A Plan For Starmont Elementary School, A. J. Nelson Jan 1989

Bibliotherapy: A Plan For Starmont Elementary School, A. J. Nelson

Graduate Research Papers

It is recognized that all elementary students must deal with a multitude of developmental and personal conflicts and changes during their first years of school. However, a specific number of these young people have greater difficulty coping with daily behavioral and/or emotional situations in which they find themselves. These children are considered ''at-risk" because they are unable to independently resolve these behavioral and/or emotional problems blocking or impeding their progress, and, thus, they cannot develop to their full academic or social potential.

Culture And Communication In China, Wu Rui Jan 1989

Culture And Communication In China, Wu Rui

Graduate Research Papers

For half a century, a major change in China has been communication, the fundamental social process by which information is shared, sentiments are expressed, and human relations are maintained. Communication is not treated merely as a stimulus or as a change agent, that brings about effects in terms of specific individual response. Rather, communication is conceptualized as the basic social process, encompassing an intricate entirety of verbal or nonverbal stimulus and response, the patterns of which change dynamically and concomitantly with changes in the social structure.

Prereading Strategies And Activities To Improve Reading Comprehension In Elementary School-Aged Students, Paula Dunham Jan 1989

Prereading Strategies And Activities To Improve Reading Comprehension In Elementary School-Aged Students, Paula Dunham

Graduate Research Papers

The dominating trend in reading research in the past two decades has focused on the study of reading as a process. Basic theoretical research replaced applied research even though many federally funded projects in the area of reading called for improvement of teaching strategies. Applied research was dismissed as unimportant and theorists rushed to define, build, and verify theories of the reading process (Vacca & Vacca, 1982).

Mother Goose: Survives And Thrives In The ‘80s, Anita Van Lancker Jan 1989

Mother Goose: Survives And Thrives In The ‘80s, Anita Van Lancker

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to show that Mother Goose endures. The researcher expected that by looking at the more recent versions, one could see how these versions differed from the original in language and illustration. Content analysis was conducted to determine the extent of change in the language and illustrations of six selected Mother Goose nursery rhymes from thirteen copyrighted original collections from 1968-1988. Rhymes were compared with original rhymes as represented in The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes to determine the degree of change in both the language and the illustrations. A data gathering instrument was used …

Children Of Divorce: Educational Interventions, Carolyn L. H. Stephenson Jan 1989

Children Of Divorce: Educational Interventions, Carolyn L. H. Stephenson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to 1) identify developmental responses to divorce, 2) identify the changes in life style and family functioning caused by divorce, and 3) identify how educators can effectively intervene when appropriate. This paper relates the developmental responses of children to divorce from preschool age through adolescence as reviewed in the longintudinal studies of Judith Wallerstein and colleagues, and other studies and articles. The review of literature, as it relates divorce to the effect on children's academic progress, highlights the lack of studies with this focus and the need for further research in the area.

The University Of Choice: Social Work Students At Uni, James G. Mccullagh Jan 1989

The University Of Choice: Social Work Students At Uni, James G. Mccullagh

Faculty Publications

The study examined expressed reasons for choosing the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) by undergraduate students majoring in social work there. Responses of 205 social work majors to a questionnaire found that these students chose UNI primarily because of location; size; cost; the presence of a social work program; to get a good education; to be with their friends; and to continue a family tradition. Other findings indicated that 44% of students had attended other colleges previously; that many students considered other majors before deciding on social work; that 84% of the students had been born in Iowa; that 50% …

Little People Learn Numbers, Nancy A. Murphy Jan 1989

Little People Learn Numbers, Nancy A. Murphy

Graduate Research Papers

The importance of early childhood education to the balance of a child's academic career has been the subject of myriad articles and studies in recent decades. Numerous school districts are operating all-day kindergarten programs, pre-kindergarten programs, and preschool programs to ensure a proper beginning to a child's challenging journey through the public school system. All subject areas have been scrutinized, but the area of number learning in young children has been particularly popular.

Fostering Children's Comprehension Abilities Through Story Retelling, Beverly Graves Jan 1989

Fostering Children's Comprehension Abilities Through Story Retelling, Beverly Graves

Graduate Research Papers

Children's involvement in whole units of language can facilitate opportunities to create meaning and to interact with others, therefore strengthening thinking and language abilities (Goodman, 1986). Parents and teachers can become facilitators of whole language by offering children many opportunities to hear stories. Trelease (1982) describes how children who hear many stories develop a strong motivation for reading, learn that reading can be enjoyable, and discover that reading and writing are "sense-making" experiences instead of activities dealing with language fragments as offered in many workbook pages and worksheets.

The Negative Effects Of Labeling On Intellectually Identified Gifted Children And Suggested Strategies For Alleviation, Paula A. Swalla Jan 1989

The Negative Effects Of Labeling On Intellectually Identified Gifted Children And Suggested Strategies For Alleviation, Paula A. Swalla

Graduate Research Papers

Concern over special education labels has existed for more than twenty years. Labeling has been found to have both positive and negative effects on those labeled as gifted. This paper reviews the research on the negative effects of labeling a child gifted and suggested strategies to alleviate these negative effects. Research indicates that the label gifted has more positive than negative effects on the majority of children labeled; however, the research also identifies a number of adverse consequences which merit consideration and possible alleviation.

Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver Jan 1989

Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver

Graduate Research Papers

Although the brain functions as a whole unit with both sides being active, there are areas of specialization within the brain. Research indicates that the human brain is composed of two hemispheres, which are capable of functioning independently of one another. According to Michael Gazzaniga (1983), the left hemisphere is responsible for linear, symbolic, sequential and verbal thought. The right hemisphere is responsible for holistic, concrete, random and pictorial thoughts. The left can be compared to a computer while the right is more creative and intuitive. Individuals tend to develop a preference for using one side over the other, although …

The Basil And Josephine Stories: Fitzgerald's Incompatible Worlds, Marcia S. Schneiter Jan 1989

The Basil And Josephine Stories: Fitzgerald's Incompatible Worlds, Marcia S. Schneiter

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Typically, members of the middle-class of American society are fascinated by the extremely wealthy people of the upper-class. One can spend hours lost in daydreams about the lifestyles of the rich -- the intriguing and even famous people they encounter, the costly, luxurious garments they wear, or the delicacies they relish. To imagine such a life seems to lighten the drudgery of one's own, possibly acting as a stimulus and driving one towards seemingly unattainable goals. The lives of the extremely wealthy are virtually impossible for most middle-class people to imagine, and likewise life in middle America may be difficult …

An Analysis Of Two Instruments For Measuring Divergent Thinking In Young Children, Jill M. Uhlenberg Jan 1989

An Analysis Of Two Instruments For Measuring Divergent Thinking In Young Children, Jill M. Uhlenberg

Graduate Research Papers

For years, many educators have expressed an interest m, a concern for, and recognized a need for research in the area of creativity. Indeed, even those not associated with the field of education have shown concern for the nurturance of creativity in children. Starkweather (1971) quotes the following: "The best plaything for a child is not a splendid and complex rattletrap, but some simple and rough thing which may be applied to various uses and purposes, and aid to stimulate invention and contrivance" (Godey's Lady's Book, 1859). To study creativity, then, educators must integrate creativity theory and testing with child …
