Individual And Universal Shyness Characteristics In Elementary Students: Implications For Counseling, Karen K. Lindberg Jan 1993

Individual And Universal Shyness Characteristics In Elementary Students: Implications For Counseling, Karen K. Lindberg

Graduate Research Papers

The basic feeling of shyness is universal (Hyson, 1987). Researchers have found that over 40% of North Americans are presently shy and over 80% of the population reported that they have been shy at some point in their lives (Ishiyama, 1984). Zimbardo's survey (cited in Christian, 1982) of 5,000 people from the United States and other countries found shyness to be common and universal. In every culture that he studied, at least 25% of the members considered themselves to be presently shy (Christian, 1982). These and other statistics gathered from self-reports indicate that shyness effects a majority of people at …

Group Career Planning: What A Beginning Facilitator Needs To Know, Sheila Sauve Jan 1993

Group Career Planning: What A Beginning Facilitator Needs To Know, Sheila Sauve

Graduate Research Papers

Group counseling is experiencing a growth in popularity in career planning and placement offices due to the increase in the number of students seeking these services. In addition, group counseling offers several advantages over individual counseling (Powell and Kirts, 1980). For example, group techniques provide levels of emotional support not found in one-to-one interaction (Powell and Kirts, 1980). Also, reinforcement supplied by one's peers produce a motivation for continued exploration and self assessment.

African-American College Students: The Struggle For Identity And Acceptance, Teri Koehn Jan 1993

African-American College Students: The Struggle For Identity And Acceptance, Teri Koehn

Graduate Research Papers

Promoting cultural diversity is of nation wide concern on college campuses. There have been many articles written on the need for diversity on college campuses. Unfortunately, despite having recognized the value of cultural diversity, many institutions have failed to adequately fund or support programs which are meant to achieve diversity. This paper will examine the treatment of African-American students. Pertinent issues considered will be societal pressures, African-American racial identity issues, financial pressure, and the effects of racism. All of these issues are important because they determine student success in college. The paper will conclude with recommendations for the future.

Let's Slow The Jump On The ___ Assessment Bandwagon, Gregory E. Dunn

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Contrary to what you may think, I did not forget to "fill in the blank" in the title of this paper. Actually I'm just a little confused as to the proper term to use. Should I fill the blank with "alternative" (Worthen, 1993), "authentic" (Wiggins, 1989), "direct" (Willis, 1990), "performance-based" (Herman, Aschbacher, & Winters, 1992), "functional" (Iowa Department of Education, 1991), or "curriculum-based" (Deno, 1987; Tucker, 1985)? It gets even more confusing when writers use terms as synonyms for each other (Herman et al.; Willis) or when writers use the same term but define it differently (Linn, Baker, & Dunbar, …

Considering Learning And Teaching First; Then Assessment Follows, Robert M. Boody Jan 1993

Considering Learning And Teaching First; Then Assessment Follows, Robert M. Boody

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Let's begin by admitting that as a field we really know very little about the impacts of various assessment models on students, schools, or anything else. Worthen, Borg, and White (1993) note that "most criticisms and defenses of tests are still primarily 'articles of faith, ' not scientifically supported positions" (p. 412). This statement should give us some pause. It suggests that the well-respected, professionally competent authors of a good text on educational measurement and evaluation aren't really sure of the impacts of measurement on students and other things! I admit that the authors would probably not understand their statement …

Selected Aspects Of Educational Access For African-Americans: A Historical And Conceptual Overview, Terence Morehead Jan 1993

Selected Aspects Of Educational Access For African-Americans: A Historical And Conceptual Overview, Terence Morehead

Graduate Research Papers

Beginning in the post Civil War era, it seemed that African-Americans would be integrated into the social, political, and economic systems of the nation. The institution of slavery, however, had systematically denied a majority of these American citizens access to all but the most rudimentary forms of education (Boylan & White, 1987). In fact, many argue that the after effects of slavery continue to this day. African-American involvement in higher education was an arduous process requiring comprehensive legislative action. Blacks and Whites, dependent on each other mainly through the economic system, required an encompassing system so African-Americans would be educated …

Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor, Sharon Ramsay Jan 1993

Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor, Sharon Ramsay

Graduate Research Papers

Ryan is eight years old and in second grade. His teacher is concerned that he is missing out on what is occurring in the classroom because of his behavior. Ryan is frequently out of his seat and disturbing other children. When the teacher gives directions, he doesn't appear to be listening. Assigned tasks are usually not completed. Ryan usually doesn't think before he acts, and often blurts out at inappropriate times. His teacher has the feeling that he wants to do well, even though he is in trouble much of the time.

Improving Accountability To Learn, Serve Others, Bruce G. Rogers Jan 1993

Improving Accountability To Learn, Serve Others, Bruce G. Rogers

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The term "accountability" refers to being "subject to having to report, explain, or justify" (from the Random House Dictionary of the English Language). Does this concept, when applied to educational settings, generate an "issue," namely, "a matter that is in dispute between two or more parties; a point of debate or controversy"? (Webster's Seventh Collegiate Dictionary) I submit that an examination of the document A Nation at Risk, along with the many affirmative and negative articles that have been written in response thereto, both in the affirmative and the negative, will indicate a resounding "yes" to this question (Bell, 1993). …

Assessing Readiness Of Students To Start School: Ready For What?, Dania S. Clark-Lempers Jan 1993

Assessing Readiness Of Students To Start School: Ready For What?, Dania S. Clark-Lempers

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

In assessing the readiness of students to start school, many facets must be considered. In the field of early childhood education, it has become a stock statement that "the school needs to be ready for the child," rather than, "The child needs to be ready for the school." However, as we look at the reality of what is possible in schools with limited resources, the questions become, "How can we meet the needs of the diverse group of children entering our schools?" and "What are the limitations in meeting those needs?" Only when we can answer these questions at each …

Implications For Counselors When Working With Gay And Lesbian Adolescents, Lois Groth

Graduate Research Papers

Living as a member of the gay and lesbian community has become increasingly accepted by the general public. However, some people continue to view the homosexual population with fear and hatred (Thomas, 1992). Although statistics vary, the Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Inc. (1987), estimated that 10% of the population is homosexual. Of that 1 0%, as many as 34% have attempted suicide

Gesell And Vygotsky: Alternative Approaches To Readiness, Melissa L. Heston Jan 1993

Gesell And Vygotsky: Alternative Approaches To Readiness, Melissa L. Heston

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The concept of "readiness" has a long history within the realm of developmental psychology and an almost equally long history within the realm of education. This concept can be traced to the early work of Arnold Gesell and his colleagues who collected extensive data on the developmental advances of children (Gesell & Ilg, 1949). Gesell placed heavy emphasis on the role of biological factors including genetics in determining the rate at which individual children progressed through a universal and hierarchical set of developmental milestones. The environment, provided it fell within the extremely wide range of normal environments, played little role …

Ethnic Identity Development Among Black High School Students, Adrienne Menette Lewis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were differences in ethnic identity as a function of gender and academic grade level and to determine if there was an interaction between gender and grade level among Black adolescents. The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) was administered to 179 Black male and female high school students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds recruited from two urban high schools in a Midwestern metropolitan area with a population of 105,000. The sample included 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders ranging in age from 14 to 19 with a mean age of 16.3 for …

Elementary, Middle School, And Special Service Teachers’ Attitudes Toward School Psychologists And The Psychological Services They Provide, Terese L. Alexander Jan 1993

Elementary, Middle School, And Special Service Teachers’ Attitudes Toward School Psychologists And The Psychological Services They Provide, Terese L. Alexander

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Teachers' attitudes of school psychologists and the psychological services they provide have been under scrutiny since the inclusion of psychological services into the schools. Investigations of teacher attitudes imply that the working relationships between teachers and school psychologists are of considerable importance. In this study, 207 (elementary, middle school, content area, and special service teachers) from a state in the Midwest were surveyed regarding their attitudes toward school psychologists and the psychological services they provide. The survey used measured several aspects of teachers' perceptions of school psychologists' (a) level of training, (b) their effectiveness, (c) qualifications to perform certain tasks, …
