Religion And Sex-Guilt: Implications For Women, Gail M. Althaus Jan 1994

Religion And Sex-Guilt: Implications For Women, Gail M. Althaus

Graduate Research Papers

In the therapeutic environment, clients present issues of sexuality at continually increasing rates (Bruess & Greenberg, 1988; Gordon, 1976). Current research supports the hypothesis that religion influences sexuality across a wide range of attitudes and behaviors (Bullis & Harrigan, 1992). The mental health professional, in order to create effective interventions, must be prepared to understand and address clients' religious and sexual issues (Bullis & Harrigan, 1992; Gray & House, 1991).

The Need For Expanding School Choice In Iowa, Dean W. Lemke Jan 1994

The Need For Expanding School Choice In Iowa, Dean W. Lemke

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Allowing parents and students freedom of school choice is the established state policy in Iowa. Because of the success of this policy, further expansion of the existing public funding of elementary and secondary school choice is needed to provide Iowa families full choice of public and nonpublic schools.

My perspective is that of an Iowa native who attended a public school, is an engineering graduate of a state university in Iowa, and has been employed 22 years in public service. My wife is from a family of public school teachers and has taught in public schools for 20 years. Our …

Marking Gender In Solitude: Ritual Exclusivity In The "Mens' Movement", Monika P. Strom Jan 1994

Marking Gender In Solitude: Ritual Exclusivity In The "Mens' Movement", Monika P. Strom

Iowa Journal of Communication

The search for self-actualization that once drew Henry David Thoreau to the woods of Walden now prompts thousands of men to pack up emotional baggage for a weekend's commune with other men in the great outdoors. As participants in the so-called "men's movement" of the 1990s, their object is to "know deeply who you are as a man. Realize you are not alone" (Stanton 116). The men's movement is more accurately a coagulation of equal rights activism, consciousness-raising, academic men's studies, and mythopoetic "Wild Man" ritualism. The trends share a groping toward self-understanding, as well as recognition of the need …

Hazing In U.S. Fraternities And Sororities, Lisa Melancon Jan 1994

Hazing In U.S. Fraternities And Sororities, Lisa Melancon

Graduate Research Papers

Due to the high occurrences of accidents and incidents from hazing, the public is addressing the moral and legal issues of hazing in fraternities and sororities. Accidents as a result of fraternity and sorority pledging has been a hot topic of discussion for over the past ten years in higher education. 1 There have been numerous incidents where one or more persons were injured or killed participating in sorority or fraternity initiations.

Silencing Voices By Celebration: The Paradox Of "The Year Of The Woman", Suzanne M. Daughton Jan 1994

Silencing Voices By Celebration: The Paradox Of "The Year Of The Woman", Suzanne M. Daughton

Iowa Journal of Communication

One particularly ironic paradox of contemporary American society is that one of the most successful rhetorical strategies for silencing a voice is to celebrate that voice. The celebrator becomes a (mis)interpreter whose message is louder, and more widely received, than the original. In this essay I will argue that this is precisely what happened to the voices and concerns of women in the 1992 United States presidential campaign.

The Diagnosis Of Multiple Personality Disorder In Adults, Sandra L. Larkin Jan 1994

The Diagnosis Of Multiple Personality Disorder In Adults, Sandra L. Larkin

Graduate Research Papers

Professional interest in multiple personality disorder (MPD) was heightened by the 1973 report of the treatment of "Sybil" (Lindsley, 1992), who had sixteen alternate personalities (Kluft, 1984; Rathus & Nevid, 1991). It was not until 1980, however, that the American Psychiatric Association recognized MPD as a legitimate mental illness (Smolowe, 1990). MPD, long considered a rarity, is being diagnosed, treated, and researched with increasing frequency (Kluft, 1984). Knowledge and recognition of the disorder are essential to its proper treatment (Lindsley, 1992). This paper will present a literature review of the development and diagnosis of this disorder.

Postdivorce Variables Related To Children's Adjustment To Their Parents' Divorce, David J. Berns Jan 1994

Postdivorce Variables Related To Children's Adjustment To Their Parents' Divorce, David J. Berns

Graduate Research Papers

The divorce rate has steadily increased in the United States. In 1960, fewer than 10 out of every 1,000 marriages ended in divorce, but the figure more than doubled by 1980 (Cherlin, 1981, cited in Emery, Hetherington & DiLalla, 1985). In 1984, 50 percent of all first marriages ended in divorce (Glick, 1984) with an even higher rate of divorce for remarriages (Berns, 1985). Many of these divorces involve children. With estimates of at least 50 percent of the children born in the 1980s likely to find themselves in a divorce situation before their 18th birthday (Glick & Lin, 1986), …

The Ability Of Children With Specific Language Impairment To Comprehend Contrastive Stress In Sentences, Nicole M. Vancleave

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Recently, researchers have studied the ability of children with specific language impairment to produce various prosodic cues, including contrastive stress (Ellis Weismer, 1992). However, there is a lack of information about the abilities of such children to comprehend this information. The purpose of the present study is to examine the capabilities of children with specific language impairment to comprehend contrastive stress in a variety of sentences.

A Road Map For Consensus Building A Road Map For Consensus Building, David H. Swim Jan 1994

A Road Map For Consensus Building A Road Map For Consensus Building, David H. Swim

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Throughout the history of our nation, education has been controversial as individuals and various groups (administrators, businesses, philosophers, politicians, parents, religious groups, students, teachers) have expressed their concern about the quality of American education. In most geographic regions/states there has been an unresolved debate regarding the definition of education, the relationship between school and community/society, the distribution of decision-making power in educational matters, and the means for improving all aspects of our educational systems. Therefore, it is the opinion of this author that a road map for negotiating the twists and turns of this diverse and bewildering landscape needs to …

Traumatic Brain Injury, Kris Marie Franzen Jan 1994

Traumatic Brain Injury, Kris Marie Franzen

Graduate Research Papers

During my freshman year in college, I met many interesting students, professors, and professionals. One of my most memorable acquaintances was with a young gentleman, approximately 19 years old, whose physical appearance and personality was relatively different from most other students on campus. As I spent the first few weeks of precalculus class sitting directly behind him, I became increasingly puzzled by his peculiar speech and his persistent need to have mathematical concepts and instructions continuously repeated. During mealtime, I regularly observed him sitting alone or with "superficial" friends in the same general section of the resident's dining area. His …

Iowa's Wolf In Populist Clothing: Norman Baker, 1925-1936, Eric Scott Juhnke

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

During the depression years of the late 1920s and 1930s, Muscatine, Iowa's Norman Baker stood as both a powerful and controversial figure in rural eastern Iowa. Baker's successful business empire, which at its height included a radio station, mail order enterprise, newspaper, magazine, and a cancer quackery hospital, earned the Muscatine tycoon millions of dollars in revenue over the course of a decade. Despite this business success, Baker's brash personality, vituperative broadcasting style, and fraudulent medical claims were subjects of constant controversy.

Considering both Baker's suspect reputation and the poor agricultural conditions of the day, the question remains: How did …

Use Of The Experiential Learning Model With Adolescent County 4-H Council Members, Vanette M. Grover Jan 1994

Use Of The Experiential Learning Model With Adolescent County 4-H Council Members, Vanette M. Grover

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Experiential learning can be traced to centuries ago, but actual models were not developed until the 1970s and beyond. The Iowa 4-H and Youth program, which is part of the Extension Service United States Department of Agriculture, has had experiential learning as its foundation since its inception early in the 20th century. Yet even 4-H, with it's well-known "learn-by-doing" philosophy, did not have a specific process with which to model learning experiences until 1992. This study examined the effectiveness of a cooperative training session which utilized the experiential learning model given to high school age leaders of the Northeast Iowa …

Humanistic Art Therapy Techniques, Richard J. Hemann Jan 1994

Humanistic Art Therapy Techniques, Richard J. Hemann

Graduate Research Papers

Because verbalization is our primary mode of communication we are more adept at manipulating and more facile in saying what we want to say and refraining from saying what we don't want to say than through other communicative modes. Art is a less customary communicative vehicle for most people and therefore less amenable to control. Unexpected things may burst forth in a 1 picture ••• sometimes totally contrary to the intentions of its creator. This is one of the most exciting potentialities in art therapy. Unexpected recognitions often form the leading edge of insight, learning, and growth. (Cook, 1991, p. …
