Borderline Personality Disorder Subtypes And Public Stigma, Seth A. Brown Jun 2024

Borderline Personality Disorder Subtypes And Public Stigma, Seth A. Brown

Faculty Publications

Despite high public stigma towards individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), no research has examined whether stigma differs among the various proposed BPD subtypes. The primary purpose of this research was to examine two potential contributors to stigma towards individuals with BPD: 1) gender, and 2) BPD subtype of the individuals. The three subtypes utilized in this study were emotional, low anxiety, and inhibited (Sleuwaegen, 2018). A total of 415 participants read 1 of 6 randomly assigned vignettes about an individual and then completed the Attribution Questionnaire which encompasses 6 aspects of stigma. Male individuals (featured in a vignette) led …

Tutors To Teachers: Benefits Of Peer Education For Future Educators [Poster], Ryan Wagner Apr 2024

Tutors To Teachers: Benefits Of Peer Education For Future Educators [Poster], Ryan Wagner

Graduation with Distinction Posters

Like many other professions, teachers are required to obtain a four-year degree before they can begin their careers, but most teacher education programs aren’t perfect, and can have some very important weaknesses. Peer Education while immensely valuable to the students peer educators serve, also has many benefits for the educators themselves that can translate into increased preparedness for teaching when teachers are finally ready to enter their own classroom for the first time.

How Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, And Stoicism Relate To Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

PROBLEM

  • Rural areas represent 20% of the U.S. population (United States Census Bureau, 2022)
  • Similar rates of mental illness among rural and urban people (Morales et al., 2020)
  • Higher suicide rates among rural people (Brunk, 2010)
  • Lower psychological help-seeking rates among rural individuals (Caldwell et al., 2004; Kirby et al., 2019)
  • Rural residents tend to wait longer and until symptoms become severe to seek help (Stewart et al., 2015)

Suspected Vs. Diagnosed Mental Illness, Race, And The Ngri Plea, Alexa Roudabush, Helen C. Harton

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

This study investigated the effects of mental illness (suspected, diagnosed) and the defendant’s race (Black, White) on receiving the NGRI plea in a Second-Degree murder case. Participants were more likely to assign the NGRI plea to a Black defendant than a White defendant if the defendant had a diagnosed mental illness, but were more likely to assign a guilty plea to the Black defendant than the White when the diagnosis was only suspected.

Impact Of High School Climate And Bullying On Depression And Anxiety In Emerging Adulthood, Tyler Larson Apr 2024

Impact Of High School Climate And Bullying On Depression And Anxiety In Emerging Adulthood, Tyler Larson

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

  • Depression and anxiety are the most common mental disorders in adolescence and emerging adulthood (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2023; NIMH, n.d.)
  • Previous studies have found that high school climate is correlated with poor mental health outcomes (Gunnarsdóttir et al., 2021; Gage et al., 2016)
  • School climate is multidimensional. Previous research has identified peer and teacher relationships, school safety, and respect for individual differences as important aspects of high school climate (Gage et al., 2016)
  • Bullying is a well-established risk factor for mental illness during adolescence (Jadambaa et al., 2020)
  • A recent meta-analysis found that bullying is responsible for …

Childhood Experiences With Finances And How They Affect Bargaining For Salary, Lauren Logue, Maelah Golden

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

• Financial socialization from parents has been shown to have a positive impact on the financial situation of young adults. Developing positive attitudes about money is a strong indicator of future financial well-being (Utkarsh, 2020).

• Without financial literacy, there is a higher risk of debt, bankruptcy, uncertain healthcare, social security, and retirement funds. Starting financial education early can lay the foundation for more success in the future (McCormick, 2006).

The Use Of Communal Resources And Its Effect On Wellness, Cassandra Ralston

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

The point of the study is to see a possible relationship between the use of communal resources and wellness. The research question was how do communal resources relate to wellness? The hypothesis was the more one uses communal resources the higher their wellness will be. The sample was college students at the University of Northern Iowa (n=71). Choice Overload, Erin Powers, Jiuquing Cheng Apr 2024

Choice Overload, Erin Powers, Jiuquing Cheng

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Research has previously hypothesized that increasing the number of choices would increase intrinsic motivation, satisfaction, and control throughout the decision-making process. However, large bodies of research has been discovering that when people experience choice overload they feel confused and dissatisfied with their choices because they don't feel like they've sought out and found the best choice. Results from choice overload research have found that increasing the assortment size of choices, added time pressure, and the risks of making a decision all negatively consumer choice.

Traumatic Brain Injury And Public Stigma: The Effect Of Perceived Responsibility, Mackenzie Grenko Apr 2024

Traumatic Brain Injury And Public Stigma: The Effect Of Perceived Responsibility, Mackenzie Grenko

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

A known 5.3 million Americans are currently disabled by traumatic brain injury (TBI; NCIPC, 2016). Perceived responsibility can alter public attitudes toward those with TBI, resulting in challenges such as stigma. Weiner’s Attribution Theory (1993) has yet to be applied to those with brain injury despite evidence that perceived responsibility negatively impacted public attitudes (Linden et al., 2007; Redpath et al., 2010). Further, It is unclear within the literature what characteristics of the injury (e.g., safety equipment uses, job-related) impact public stigma. Therefore, the aim of this study is to expand on previous research regarding TBI and perceptions of responsibility …

Red Vs. Blue: Identifying Demands Among Faculty And Graduate Students, Mackenzie Grenko, Kieran Luedke, Tenzin Kalsang, Helen C. Harton

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Recently enacted legislation and political climate may contribute to faculty dissatisfaction. For instance, 87% of faculty in Florida would not recommend faculty jobs in their state because of recent laws affecting higher education (e.g., DEI funding restrictions in institutions; Zahneis & June 2023). Those in Democratic states may also be impacted (e.g., White males feeling discriminated against; Isom Scott, 2018). These political climates related to higher education may also impact graduate students and contribute to their stress. In this study, we examined to what extent being in a “red,” “purple,” or “blue” state (e.g., conservative, moderate/centrist, or liberal) related to …

Empathy, Education, & Empowerment: Reflections On The World Of Dementia, Samantha Heyer, Jordan Neely, Sarah Stegge, Elaine M. Eshbaugh

Research in the Capitol

At the Dementia Simulation House, we offer the opportunity for participants to experience what life may be like for someone living with dementia in a home setting. About 80% of individuals living with dementia live at home in the community, and we aim to show participants what it might be like for these individuals to complete chores and activities of daily living. During the simulation, we put gear on an individual to simulate dementia. Then participants go through a debriefing which involves writing a reaction word. We sorted the reaction words and calculated percentages on the popularity/common phrases or words …

Political Orientation And Moral Values: Examining Their Effects On Susceptibility To Misinformation, Makayla L. Hall, Jordan A. Neely, Helen C. Harton Mar 2024

Political Orientation And Moral Values: Examining Their Effects On Susceptibility To Misinformation, Makayla L. Hall, Jordan A. Neely, Helen C. Harton

Research in the Capitol

According to past research, political misinformation is prevalent within social media, where information often goes unchecked. Both liberals and conservatives tend to believe misinformation that supports their beliefs. Values emphasized also tend to differ by political orientation, with liberals being more concerned with issues of harm, fairness, and universalism, and conservatives, with loyalty, authority, purity, and self-reliance. This study examines whether misinformation susceptibility is influenced by which of these values the information appeals to. 136 participants read social media posts that either supported or did not support their party’s platforms and that appealed to one of the seven values. They …

Gender Socialization And Social Media In College Students' Fear Of Crime, Ashlyn Miller Mar 2024

Gender Socialization And Social Media In College Students' Fear Of Crime, Ashlyn Miller

Research in the Capitol

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between gender, viewing crime related material on social media, and fear of crime experienced by college students. While violent crime rates have fallen, the majority of college students report levels of crime are increasing. Many individuals lack both knowledge and experience related to crime, leading media exposure to influence their levels of fear. Previous research has focused on television media related to fear of crime with little research on social media, the preferred media source of young adults. College students (n = 126) from a midwestern university completed a survey …

How Consideration Of Future Consequences, Prior Gain Or Loss, Personal Risk Profile, And Justification Affect Risk–Payoff Preferences, W. Eric Lee Feb 2024

How Consideration Of Future Consequences, Prior Gain Or Loss, Personal Risk Profile, And Justification Affect Risk–Payoff Preferences, W. Eric Lee

Faculty Publications

This study examines (1) how risk–payoff preference can be affected by differences in consideration of future consequences (CFC), prior gain/loss, and personal risk profile, and (2) whether one’s risk–payoff preference may vary with justification prompts. Using an experimental design with 366 undergraduate business students, participants are tasked to make risk–payoff choices in two scenarios, with the combined risk–payoff outcomes serving as the dependent variable. In addition, participants are assessed on their personal risk profiles and also complete the 14-item CFC scale to gauge the propensity to take into account future consequences of their behaviors. Findings show that one who scores …

Effect Of Teacher Social Support On Students’ Emotions And Learning Engagement: A U.S.-Chinese Classroom Investigation, Moyi Jia, Jiuqing Cheng Jan 2024

Effect Of Teacher Social Support On Students’ Emotions And Learning Engagement: A U.S.-Chinese Classroom Investigation, Moyi Jia, Jiuqing Cheng

Faculty Publications

Psychological and instructional communication researchers increasingly recognize the significance of student emotions in determining their engagement in the classroom. Under the direction of Emotional Response Theory (Mottet, Frymier, & Beebe, 2006), this study aims to establish a model of a college instructor’s social support, student positive and negative emotions, and student engagement in learning. It also attempts to extend this research by examining cultural differences in U.S. and Chinese classrooms and how these factors influence teacher behavior and student emotions. The result demonstrates the mediating effects of student positive emotions between teacher support and student engagement in both cultures. In …
