Educational Leadership In Model Plc Schools: Actions That Lead To Sustained Success, Nathan L. Wear

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the current study was to identify leadership characteristics and actions by administrators in Model Professional Learning Community (PLC) status schools and identify what actions led to achieving Model PLC School status. The current study explored how effective PLC implementation impacts student achievement. Guided by DuFour et al.’s (2006) framework for PLCs (i.e., focus on learning, collaboration, and results), the current study investigated specific leadership behaviors that school leaders in Model PLC schools use to leverage results. The study sought to answer two research questions. First, what are the key characteristics and actions of the administrators in Model …

Faculty Publications

Over the last few years, wearable devices have witnessed immense changes in terms of sensing capabilities. Wearable devices, with their ever-increasing number of sensors, have been instrumental in monitoring human activities, health-related indicators, and overall wellness. One health-related area that has rapidly adopted wearable devices is the mental health monitoring and well-being area, which covers problems such as psychological distress. The continuous monitoring capability of wearable devices allows the detection and monitoring of stress, thus enabling early detection of mental health problems. In this paper, we present a systematic review of the different types of sensors and wearable devices used …

Utilizing Extractive Transportation Infrastructures For Subsistence Livelihoods: Experience Of Evenki Communities In Eastern Siberia, Vera Kuklina, Viktoriya Filippova, Natalia Krasnoshtanova, Antonina Savvinova, Viktor Bogdanov, Mariia Kuklina

Faculty Publications

The availability of natural resources drives the exploration and transformation of remote regions in the Arctic and beyond. Extractive infrastructure is one of the major sources of industrial development and environmental impact on landscapes. For Indigenous people, these landscapes are homely environments full of sentient beings, and for other local communities, they provide a wide variety of subsistence and hunting resources. While extractive infrastructure violence is the evident issue for many Indigenous communities, there are more complicated situations where extractive infrastructure is adopted and utilized for the subsistence and support of other human and more-than-human relations in local and Indigenous …

Eclipse Anti-Planning, Thomas Hockey Dec 2024

Eclipse Anti-Planning, Thomas Hockey

Faculty Publications

It is common practice among eclipse chasers to recount the intricacies of eclipse-travel planning, and the proverbial trials and tribulations of the expedition itself. Indeed, this kind of narrative is a basic element to human storytelling. However, such a historiography skews the historical record. Moreover, well-meaning emphasis on careful planning might alienate some non-umbraphiles who have a different cost/benefit ratio than we do.

The Power Of Homeownership: The Case For Iowa Heartland Habitat For Humanity, Esha Jayswal, Joseph Ugrin, Disa Cornish, Brent Buhr, Ali Parrish

Faculty Publications

This research examines the impact of financially assisted homeownership for Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity home recipients as measured in life satisfaction. We develop and assess a model with homeownership as the independent variable and financial well-being, current health, and psychological well-being as mediating variables that impact life satisfaction. We utilize data from 184 Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity homeowners and applicants to test the model. The findings show that homeownership through Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity is related to life satisfaction. That relationship is partially mediated by financial well-being, current health, and psychological well-being, where the mediating variables amplify …

Pandemics are regularly occurring events, and there are foundational principles of pandemic preparation upon which communities, regions, states, and nations may draw upon for elevated preparedness against an inevitable future infectious disease threat. Many disciplines within the social sciences can provide crucial insight and transdisciplinary thinking for the development of preparedness measures. In 2023, the National Science Foundation funded a conference of circumpolar researchers and Indigenous partners to reflect on COVID-19-related research. In this article, we synthesise our diverse social science perspectives to: (1) identify potential areas of future pandemic-related research in Alaska, and (2) pose new research questions that …

Returnees’ Perspectives Of The Adverse Impact Of Forced Displacement On Children, Itunu O. Ilesanmi, Jasmine D. Haynes, Florence O. Ogundimu

Faculty Publications

Conflict-related forced displacement, characterized by the experiences of witnessing violent acts, bombing, torture, separation, and the execution of family members, can severely and negatively impact a child’s social determinants of health (SDOH). These experiences are both direct and indirect forms of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and urgent attention is needed to understand the impact of forced displacement on children, who are a vulnerable group, and to develop interventions for all systems that influence the child. This phenomenological qualitative study involved in-depth interviews based on the experiences of returnees (n = 20), who are parents of children who experienced forced displacement. …

Acclaimed Children's Literature As Global Resources, Sunah Chung, Melanie D. Koss, Kathleen A. Paciga

Faculty Publications

Acclaimed children's books in the United States (U.S.) may be utilized as resources to instruct global issues. As children’s literature reflects social context and values, acclaimed books may provide curricular materials for those within the U.S. and to international audiences. Stakeholders, including librarians, teachers, national industry experts, and parents, are among those who review and award prizes to children’s literature. This work has resulted in booklists teachers, families, and librarians use to guide their book purchasing and sharing practices. We investigate the histories, composition, and criteria for 22 award and acclaimed U.S. children’s book lists containing 4,244 titles. Fewer than …

Experimenting With Qr Codes And Envelope Size In Push-To-Web Surveys, Kyle Endres, Erin O. Heiden, Ki Park, Mary E. Losch, Karisa K. Harland, Anne L. Abbott

Faculty Publications

Survey researchers are continually evaluating approaches to increase response rates, especially those that can be implemented with little or no costs. In this study, we experimentally evaluated whether or not including Quick Response (QR) codes in mailed recruitment materials for self-administered web surveys increased web survey participation. We also assessed whether mailing these materials in a non-standard envelope size (6 × 9 inch) yielded a higher response rate than invitations mailed in a standard, #10 envelope (4.125 × 9.5 inch). These experiments were embedded in a sequential mixed-mode (dual-frame phone and web) statewide survey. Including a QR code (in addition …

Education serves as the primary line of defense against crime and other psychological difficulties. Children exposed to adversity and emotional challenges may be susceptible to various risks, potentially leading to criminal activities. Forgiveness has been demonstrated as a healing influence in the lives of individuals who have experienced hurt and accumulated negative emotions due to life events. Understanding forgiveness from a young age, in both theory and practice, may facilitate improved relationships and psychological well-being. This article underscores the significance of forgiveness education, advocating for a culturally and theologically sensitive approach. In this article we will offer an example of …

Investigating The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy, Science Teaching Beliefs, And Science Teaching Practices In Pre-Service Science Education, Carolyn Kress, Kiran Willis, Jesse Wilcox, Diva Dodiya, Pranav Kota, Jerrid Kruse

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

This study explored pre-service secondary science teachers’ self-efficacy, science teaching beliefs, and science teaching practices. We measured self-efficacy (Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument-B), science teaching beliefs (Teacher Belief Instrument), and effectiveness (Local Systemic Classroom Change Observation Protocol) three times throughout the semester. Overall, there was a significant increase in self-efficacy, science teaching beliefs, and effectiveness between measures one and three. However, three different trends were observed when looking at participants in smaller groups: the Dunning-Kruger effect, consistent growth, and the false consensus effect.

Determinants Of Women’S Fertility Rates In The U.S., Kelle Bormann Jul 2024

Determinants Of Women’S Fertility Rates In The U.S., Kelle Bormann

Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics

Fertility rates have long been a subject of extensive research. In our constantly evolving world, economists have examined these rates across different times and regions to understand how cultural and economic factors influence women’s fertility. This paper analyzes historically significant factors to determine if their impact has changed over time, aiming to inform policies addressing the declining fertility trend. Data from the IPUMS USA 2021 census was used, estimated through a logit odds ratio regression with robust standard errors, and analyzed at the ten, five, and one percent significance levels. The findings indicate that the age of the youngest child …

Children’S Reading Of Visuals In Informational Picturebooks And Biographies, Sunah Chung

Faculty Publications

Visuals in picturebooks play an important role in supporting children’s reading comprehension and literacy development. This qualitative case study analyzes three American families’ shared reading practices at home by analyzing their online surveys for family literacy environments, reading logs for a month, mother interviews, and video observation of their shared reading at home. The analysis of the collected data categorizes children’s responses to visuals into three major themes: reflecting personal preferences and thoughts on visuals, interpreting visuals based on prior knowledge, and misreading visuals that interfere with understanding content. The discussion focuses on the roles of visuals in informational picturebooks …

Mindfulness witnessed a substantial popularity surge in the past decade, especially as digitally self-administered interventions became available at relatively low costs. Yet, it is uncertain whether they effectively help reduce stress. In a preregistered (OSF https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/UF4JZ; retrospective registration at ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06308744) multi-site study (nsites = 37, nparticipants = 2,239, 70.4% women, Mage = 22.4, s.d.age = 10.1, all fluent English speakers), we experimentally tested whether four single, standalone mindfulness exercises effectively reduced stress, using Bayesian mixed-effects models. All exercises proved to be more efficacious than the active control. We observed a mean difference of 0.27 (d = −0.56; 95% confidence …
