Exploring Intelligence And Interpersonal Communication: An Analysis Of Intellectual Perceptions In A Real Dating Arena, Andrew Dix

Iowa Journal of Communication

The present study examined the relationship between perceptions of intelligence and interpersonal communication in a courtship setting. Participants engaged in speed-dating as a means to quantitatively assess whether evaluations of a dating partner would change from pre-test to post-test. Findings indicated positive messages caused participants to see a potential romantic partner as more intelligent. In contrast, negative communication resulted in unfavorable evaluations of dater intelligence. Study data focused on participant matches revealed women were significantly more selective than men in terms of second-date selection. The findings can be applied to various communicative contexts including employment interviewing and casual dating. Future …

Facilitating Transfer For Adult Learners Through Cross-Cultural E-Learning, Min Zhang

Graduate Research Papers

Benefiting from globalization and technology advancement, e-leaming is increasingly being used by work organizations for improving the skills of knowledge workers. However, most workplace e-leaming is too theoretical to impact on-the-job and ultimately fails to serve the organizations' quest for success. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the variables that affect transfer of learning, and to provide feasible strategies to enhance transfer of learning for international adult learners in cross-cultural online learning environments. By conducting a critical review of purposefully selected peer reviewed journal articles, this review highlights the relationship between cultural differences and learning style preferences …

Analyzing The Creative Problem-Solving Process: Inventing A Product From A Given Recyclable Item, Caralee K. Doak, Stacey M. Jambura, Jason A. Knittel, Audrey C. Rule

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Detailed documentations of creative invention are scarce in the professional literature, but could be useful to those engaging in or studying the problem solving process. This investigation describes the creative process of graduate students (7 female, 4 male) in a problem-solving theory and practice course grappling with the task of creating products from four identical recyclable items that were circular, star-impressed bottoms of plastic juice bottles. Several popular models of the problem-solving process are compared to the participants’ steps in this invention problem. Participants first provided emotional reactions to the given ill-defined problem of making a product from the specified …

Comparison Of Student Achievement, Understanding, Enjoyment, And Motivation In Mathematics Units For High-Achieving Fifth Graders With And Without Creative Problem Solving Games, Kalyn Jon Cody

Graduate Research Papers

Students in our public schools often struggle to create deep, personal meaning regarding mathematical concepts. Perhaps our students do not spend enough time studying mathematics during the day. Perhaps our teachers do not have a deep understanding, which leads to problems in teaching at a deep level. Or perhaps our students simply are not motivated to study the subject at a deep level because it does not seem interesting. In this pretest/post-test repeated measures study of 24 fifth grade students in a grade-accelerated mathematics class, a link between achievement scores and understanding of mathematical concepts through the use of invented …

Developing Clever Players Through Self-Talk, Kirk Artist Jan 2013

Developing Clever Players Through Self-Talk, Kirk Artist

Graduate Research Papers

Coaches must instruct and motivate each individual athlete to fit within their team construct and philosophy. Athletes are expected to learn and develop through the feedback that their coaches give them, then execute and perform in practice and game situations. To execute and perform successfully, athletes must be able to take the feedback from coaches and make their own decisions. This sense of autonomy will enable individual athletes to become more clever, which is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary (2011) as, "Skillful or adroit in using hands and body or mentally quick and resourceful" (p. 231 ). Cleverness in athletes …

The Epidemiology Of Breast Cancer Among Men, And Gender-Specific Health Promotion Programming, Noorah A. Alsebiani Jan 2013

The Epidemiology Of Breast Cancer Among Men, And Gender-Specific Health Promotion Programming, Noorah A. Alsebiani

Graduate Research Papers

According to Goodman, Tung and Wilkens (2006), little is known about the epidemiology of breast cancer among men, compared to that among women. The challenge is that many studies focus on women as the majority of cancer victims (Reiner, Jacks, van Zee, and Panageas, 2011). According to Al-Haddad (2010), the lack of focus on breast cancer among men results in late diagnosis and an increased risk of mortality among male patients. The lack of focus on male breast cancer means that relatively little information is known about the epidemiology of the disease among men. Without a strong epidemiological understanding of …

Library Paraeducators' Training: Assumptions Or Facts?, Virginia H. Knapp Jan 2013

Library Paraeducators' Training: Assumptions Or Facts?, Virginia H. Knapp

Graduate Research Papers

Paraeducators seem to be in a quandary. State officials, administrators, teachers, special education teachers, librarians, local educational agencies, community colleges and school boards all have perceptions of what training paraeducators need but few consider the special expectations for a library paraeducator.

The current study seeks responses to the following research questions:

1. How well qualified for their positions do library paraeducators feel?

2. How do library paraeducators describe their job training?

3. What are perceptions-of teacher librarians and administrators regarding the training of paraprofessionals to work in school libraries?

The researcher will examine the requirements of the Iowa Department of …

Vocabulary Acquisition In Kindergarten For English Language Learners: Ventriglia's Rule Of 3, Or Marzano's Six Steps To Effective Vocabulary Instruction?, Danielle Marie Rose

Graduate Research Papers

Teaching kindergarten is my passion. I love the excitement five and six year old children bring to the classroom. Their sense of wonder, their smiles and their laughter bring constant joy to my life. A group of children that I especially love teaching is the English language learners in my classroom. These children are always so curious to learn, but many times lack the adequate vocabulary to understand conversations between peers or comprehend the meaning of books. This lack of vocabulary knowledge decreases their success in the classroom. Throughout my teaching career, it has been my constant desire to implement …
