When Politeness Is Risky: Positive Politeness And Sexual Debut, Kimberly A. Parker, Bobi Ivanov, Elisia L. Cohen
Iowa Journal of Communication
Although we know partner communication is important for safer sex behavior, we still have much to learn regarding how adolescents manage their sexual communication during initial sexual experiences. To explore these phenomena, researchers conducted 33 in-depth semi-structured interviews of young women retrospectively reflecting on their perception of communication during their first sexual intercourse. Using the framework of Politeness Theory, an inductive interpretive approach identified young women's retrospective framing of their social and sexual identities. As such, the following three concerns were identified: (1) lack of experience, (2) pressure, and (3) relational concerns. Furthermore, the manuscript describes common facework strategies women …

To Tweet Or Not To Tweet: Explaining Fan-Celebrity Interaction On Twitter, Natalie Pennington, Jeffrey A. Hall, Alex Hutchinson
To Tweet Or Not To Tweet: Explaining Fan-Celebrity Interaction On Twitter, Natalie Pennington, Jeffrey A. Hall, Alex Hutchinson
Iowa Journal of Communication
This research sought to explain why individuals attempt to engage with celebrities through Twitter. Hypotheses derived from Social Penetration Theory, parasocial relationships, social cache, individual differences, and personality were tested in two studies. Survey results of Study 1 (N =349) found that a desire to interact arose out of a combination of three factors: (1) communication depth, (2) parasocial relationships, and (3) social cache. Social cache was further validated through an experimental design (N = 208) that used a 2x2x2 design with depth, parasocial relationships, and social cache to assess why some individuals engage with celebrities through Twitter. Both social …

Words Can Hurt The Ones You Love: Interpersonal Trust As It Relates To Listening Anxiety And Verbal Aggression, Natalie S. Hoskins, Alesia Woszidlo, Adrianne Kunkel
Iowa Journal of Communication
The goal of this study was to examine the associations among interpersonal trust, listening anxiety, and verbal aggression in young adult romantic relationships. Listening anxiety is a factor of informational reception apprehension (IRA; Wheeless, Preiss, & Gayle, 1997) derived/ram the perception of one's inability to effectively process information while listening. Undergraduate students (N = 307) from a Midwestern university completed an online questionnaire. Results revealed that listening anxiety was negatively associated with interpersonal trust and that interpersonal trust was negatively associated with verbal aggression. Further, there was a significant indirect effect of listening anxiety on verbal aggression through interpersonal trust, …
College Students' Disclosure Of Mental Health Counseling Utilization, Hannah Butler
College Students' Disclosure Of Mental Health Counseling Utilization, Hannah Butler
Iowa Journal of Communication
Mental health issues have long been stigmatized, which has led to the discrimination against people with mental health problems and to a lack of mental health service utilization. Because of stigma, disclosing mental health problems and the use of mental health services is not an easy task. The discipline of communication has produced many studies on self-disclosure, with special attention given to the disclosure of risky information. Only recently, however, have studies begun exploring individuals' disclosure of mental illness. Few studies examine the disclosure of mental health treatment utilization. The current study explores male and female college students' disclosure of …

The Impact Of Twitterbot Race On Interpersonal Impressions, Henry Goble, Austin J. Beattie, Chad Edwards
The Impact Of Twitterbot Race On Interpersonal Impressions, Henry Goble, Austin J. Beattie, Chad Edwards
Iowa Journal of Communication
Twitterbots are automated programs that can tweet and interact with users of Twitter. With consideration to the growing usage of social media for communicative and informational functions and to current events such as the "Black Lives Matter" movement, this study explores differences in perceptions of communication quality between racially-depicted black and white Twitterbots, specifically perceptions of credibility and interpersonal attraction. This study employs social presence theory as a theoretical lens. Results suggest that participants viewed the black-depicted Twitterbot as higher in credibility and interpersonal attraction. Results are discussed in light of social presence theory and offer directions for future studies …
Socially Supported Transition: How Transgender Individuals Use The Internet To Navigate Medical Transition, Katy A. Ross, Juliann C. Scholl
Socially Supported Transition: How Transgender Individuals Use The Internet To Navigate Medical Transition, Katy A. Ross, Juliann C. Scholl
Iowa Journal of Communication
Transgender individuals use the Internet, especially social media, to help establish and confirm their gender identity and to discover information which could be beneficial during medical transition. Transgender individuals often need to seek social support, because traditional health environments can be a personally negative experience, can be unequipped to address their particular needs, and can be a place of potential discrimination. Using Gottlieb's (1978) framework of social support, the purpose of this study was to better understand the use of social media by transgender individuals seeking social support related to medical transition. Qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews produced three themes: …

Make It So: Employing A Multi-Player Starship Bridge Simulator In A Military-Based Leadership Course, Robert Green
Make It So: Employing A Multi-Player Starship Bridge Simulator In A Military-Based Leadership Course, Robert Green
Graduate Research Papers
The Make It So Leadership Training Program employs the multiplayer PC-based Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator game as the capstone exercise in a thirty-hour leadership program. I sought to replicate the leadership training I received as a seagoing military officer, in order to provide students with a valuable and memorable leadership experience in a novel setting. Guided by the Understanding by Design® (UbD) (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005) framework, I designed this course to develop students’ transfer and understanding capacities in leadership principles. I received feedback and guidance from alpha and beta testers throughout the design and development phase. As a work …

Racial Disparities Among African Americans Primarily In The Criminal Justice System And Other Areas In Society, Juana D. Hollingsworth
Graduate Research Papers
African Americans are overrepresented in the criminal justice system and known to experience disadvantages in society because of their race/ethnicity. In an effort to understand the barriers that hinder African Americans from equal opportunity; this study explores the possible factors that account for the disparities against the African American population in the criminal justice system and other areas in society. The current studies that exist utilize qualitative and quantitative interviews to collect the perceptions and experiences of African Americans with law enforcement. Findings revealed disparities particularly in the criminal justice system; the disparities are present in traffic tops, arrest, and …
The Use Of Meditation And Yoga As A Treatment Tool For Juvenile Offenders In Residential Treatment Centers For Relapse Prevention, Danielle K. W. Ballard-Green
The Use Of Meditation And Yoga As A Treatment Tool For Juvenile Offenders In Residential Treatment Centers For Relapse Prevention, Danielle K. W. Ballard-Green
Graduate Research Papers
Although crime has continued to decline over the last decade, the incarceration of minority youth happens at higher rates compared to their white counterparts. Incarcerated youth face trauma at high rates. Trauma can impact an individual's behavior and response to stress. Many incarcerated youth have substance use disorders (SUDs) and a relapse of substance use can result in a relapse of criminal behavior. When a youth is heavily immersed within the juvenile justice system, they are often placed within residential treatment centers (RTC). There are minimal treatment approaches that are successful within RTCs; they do not address the difficulty the …
The Transition Of Flipped Instruction : From Professional Development To Classroom, Alison J. Sauter
The Transition Of Flipped Instruction : From Professional Development To Classroom, Alison J. Sauter
Graduate Research Papers
This action research study was designed to implement flipped classroom professional development for high school teachers, and investigate whether the flipped professional development could be transferred from the teacher learning into student learning. Over three months the teachers' flipped professional development covered the flipped classroom model, differentiated group work, and the technologies needed to flip a lesson. Each of the seven participants created and delivered three flipped lessons in their classrooms. The major findings suggest that the flipped learning skills were transferred from professional development to practice (with the aid of instructional coaching.) Recommendations for further professional development on classroom …
Differentiated Reading Instruction Through Guided Reading : A Framework For Effective Reading Instruction In The Primary Grades, Kara L. Neville
Differentiated Reading Instruction Through Guided Reading : A Framework For Effective Reading Instruction In The Primary Grades, Kara L. Neville
Graduate Research Papers
Effective reading instruction has been an evolution of many different theories and ideas, and best practices are continually changing and being debated. Differentiated instruction has also been a hot topic in the education world recently, but is not a new concept. What evolves when differentiated instruction is teamed with effective reading instruction? When implemented properly, these two concepts can interweave to create a model for reading instruction that delivers a research-based, effective curriculum which meets the needs of all learners.
The Effect Of Serious Gaming On Elementary Student Learning, Amanda Moritz
The Effect Of Serious Gaming On Elementary Student Learning, Amanda Moritz
Graduate Research Papers
With our ever-changing technological world, schools need to incorporate more engaging learning activities that expose and extend students' learning with technologies. This literature review investigated the effects of serious gaming activities on student achievement. Thirty peer-reviewed journals were selected, analyzed, and evaluated. These studies were conducted about a variety of subject areas in the elementary setting in different areas around the world. Research evidence suggested that serious gaming, whose primary goal is not entertainment but instead to educate the user, can improve student achievement, meet their different learning styles, and enhance student motivation across curricular areas and regions. Recommendations for …

The Attitudes Of Typically Developing Young Children Toward Their Peers With Disabilities : A Review Of The Literature, Sara Elizabeth Kayser
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on young children's attitudes toward their peers with disabilities and its impact on the social interactions between typically developing preschoolers and their peers with disabilities. A three-step search and selection process resulted in eleven studies to be reviewed. The findings in these studies are presented around the cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions of attitude formation. Results indicate that while typically developing young children have a simple understanding of disabilities and state their intention to play with and include peers with disabilities they are significantly less likely to play and be …

A Professional Development Plan To Increase Student Motivation Through The Analysis Of Three Motivational Components : Student, Teacher, And Accountability Measures, Ashley Ann Oleson
Graduate Research Papers
This paper contains professional development plan and instructions to be used to train educators about student motivation. While the plan was created to be implemented as a year-long professional development, it could be used in smaller increments focusing on one or two of the three total components that influence student motivation. The three components include: student, teacher, and accountability measures. The final plan, Student Motivation Professional Development Plan, SMPDP, was formulated from research referenced within this paper. SMPDP agendas, plans, and all necessary materials needed for implementation are also included.
The Effect Of Flipped Instruction On Student Learning : Perspectives From Students And Teachers, Britta Adams
The Effect Of Flipped Instruction On Student Learning : Perspectives From Students And Teachers, Britta Adams
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this literature review is to examine the effects the flipped classroom has on student achievement, student attitudes and teacher perceptions. Thirty peer-reviewed journal articles were reviewed and analyzed. Three themes emerged from the review: student achievement, student attitudes and teacher perception. It was found that the flipped classroom was a positive experience within a majority of the studies. Since little research has been done in the K-8 level for content areas outside of math and science, it is recommended that further research to be done in a larger variety of content areas at the primary and secondary …

The Rise Of Close Reading, Jayne E. Larsen
The Rise Of Close Reading, Jayne E. Larsen
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this advanced literature review is to examine the evolution of close reading as a reading strategy. Currently, close reading is a strategy used to teach students to independently navigate through challenging text. This strategy was previously used in higher education, but as years progressed, the strategy was used less frequently. Since the implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) there has been a rebirth of close reading as a reading strategy.
The literature review discusses the history and background of close reading starting in the early 1900's. Next the literature review explores instructional strategies, and effective …
Education: An Unexplored Variable On Millennial Volunteer Attitudes, Darian N. Everding
Education: An Unexplored Variable On Millennial Volunteer Attitudes, Darian N. Everding
Honors Program Theses
For the 1.9 million nonprofit organizations in the United States, engaging potential volunteers in an efficient way is critical to their success. As Baby Boomers retire, the Millennial generation is expected to populate an ever-growing percentage of the volunteer workforce. The Millennial population totals nearly 80 million in the United States alone. The current body of research has been focused primarily on general attitudes of Millennials in regards to volunteering, philanthropy, and corporate social responsibility. There has been very little analysis on the attitudes of Millennials based on their demographic information, especially their education level. Less than a third of …
