Narratives Of Identity: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Biracial Identity Construction And Performance In Family, Education, And Media, Eboni Springfield

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis explores the complex construction and performance of biracial identity within the context of the United States, delving into the historical and ongoing impacts of race and racism, and the pervasive influence of white supremacy. Through an autoethnographic approach, this study investigates how personal narratives illuminate the processes of biracial identity construction, expression, and negotiation across three social institutions: family, education, and media. The findings reveal the intricate and intersecting interactions that contribute to identity formation, highlighting the expansive nature of intersectionality. The analysis demonstrates that biracial identity is continuously shaped in response to white supremacy, which complicates efforts …

A Systematic Review Of Creating An Ideal Adult Day Center For People With Dementia In Ghana (Sub-Saharan Africa), Christopher Lartei Aryee

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, the concept of adult day centres for people with dementia and other neurocognitive impairments has emanated from the West. Currently, in most western countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, these facilities have become an important part of the continuum of care for the elderly and disabled (Doherty et al., 2020). These adult daycare centers provide a planned environment for medical supervision, social activities, and recreational therapy on an individual basis. Most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, however, like Ghana, have been slow in developing such facilities. Stigma associated with dementia and mental disorders, coupled with a …

Body Image In College Athletics, Tyrell Gordon Jan 2024

Body Image In College Athletics, Tyrell Gordon

Graduate Research Papers

Body image dissatisfaction of college athletes is a real problem and it is affecting female athletes at an alarming rate compared to their male counterparts. Body image is a multidimensional construct involving perceptions and attitudes of the body’s functional capabilities and physical appearance. Although women experience a greater level of body dissatisfaction than men, previous research shows that men are experiencing greater levels of negative body image than in the past. The dominant explanation for this trend is one of two things, the first of which is that women participate in more aesthetically pleasing sports such as soccer, gymnastics, volleyball, …

Graduate Portfolio, Olivia Campbell Jan 2024

Graduate Portfolio, Olivia Campbell

Graduate Research Papers

History is often thought of as big events that happened throughout time. This notion can be seen in the way history is often taught in the high school and often college levels. World history always teaches about events like the world wars and similar conflicts. American history always teaches about events such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Civil War. Because of this, whether intentionally or not, history is often thought of as big events that have happened. History is also often taught through the lens of “great man history”, which focuses on people who had …

What if you have determined that the students you teach need foundational knowledge and skills that are not addressed in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)? My Ninth Grade Physical Science class provides an introduction to the data intensive subjects of subsequent secondary science classes. Sound data requires accurate measurements. Students in my classes have struggled with layering the metric system of measurement on top of the Imperial system and the NGSS lacks a standard that directly addresses measurement with metric units.

I used the Backward Design process of Wiggins & McTighe (2005) to construct a unit centered on the …

The Effects Of Sleep Quality On The Performance And Health Of Athletes, Andy Niese Jan 2024

The Effects Of Sleep Quality On The Performance And Health Of Athletes, Andy Niese

Graduate Research Papers

The quest for victorious supremacy within competitive athletics is a never-ending battle, a cutthroat process where the more successful athletes are willing to go to the extremes of physical training and nutritional modifications to gain any kind of edge over their opponents, many of whom are countering those efforts with the exact same type of self-fortifying tactics. Yet, the rudimentary human need for sleep is often an underestimated and forgotten weapon in enhancing and maximizing athletic performance. Furthermore, it would not be an exaggeration to categorize the basic existential tenant of sleep as the deal breaker for an athlete’s performance …

Unreliable Narrators; Origins And Impact, Lauren Fetzer Jan 2024

Unreliable Narrators; Origins And Impact, Lauren Fetzer

Honors Program Theses

Unreliable narrators can be found in every source of information. They mediate the text for the reader and raise our perceptions of stories, news articles, and forms of receiving facts. While they can be seen in a variety of different genres and forms of literature over the span of many decades, the understanding and acceptance of unreliable narrators have shifted over time. During the late nineteenth century, many authors utilized neutral narrators, intended to be without opinions or bias, when discussing social issues. In Stephen Crane’s 1893 novella Maggie: a Girl of the Streets the narrator is not the main …
