Pumping Tests On Wells In Iowa, Russell M. Jeffords Jan 1952

Pumping Tests On Wells In Iowa, Russell M. Jeffords

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A systematic investigation of geology and ground-water resources of Iowa has been carried on for many years by the State Geological Survey, more recently in cooperation with the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior. The purpose of the current study is to collect and analyze data on the geology and on the occurrence, quantity, quality, and development of ground water throughout Iowa; to assist individuals and municipal, State, and Federal groups in the solution of problems relating to water supply from wells and springs; and to prepare for publication or other distribution such information as is of value …

Probability Of Success In Business Mathematics, Earle L. Canfield Jan 1952

Probability Of Success In Business Mathematics, Earle L. Canfield

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the problems of frequent concern to educators is that of predicting achievement of students so that both potentially superior and slow students can be identified early in a course for the purpose of giving adequate attention to such cases. The general method of the procedure to be discussed here might be applicable to many situations, but it is especially applicable in mathematics.

Pathological Functions, H. P. Thielman Jan 1952

Pathological Functions, H. P. Thielman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The object of this paper is to give some examples of functions which are peculiar with respect to continuity and neighborliness, and also to show that there exist point properties (of functions) with respect to which no function can be peculiar. One such point property, namely that of cliquishness of a junction as defined here is a natural generalization of continuity and neighborliness, but yields results which are quite different from those which hold for continuous or neighborly functions. This property of cliquishness reduces to the property of neighborly' as defined by Bledsoe3 for the case when the domain of …

Conjugate Points Of Singular Quadratic Functionals For N Dependent Variables, John O. Chellevold Jan 1952

Conjugate Points Of Singular Quadratic Functionals For N Dependent Variables, John O. Chellevold

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Morse and Leighton (Singular quadratic functionals. Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, volume 40 (1936) pp. 252-286) gave a systematic approach to the problem of minimizing a singular quadratic functional for one dependent variable considering integrands of the type f (x, y, y') = r(x) y'2 + 2q (x) y y' + p (x) y2 where r, q, and p are single-valued continuous functions of the real variable x on the interval (0, d)(2) and r is positive. They defined first conjugate point of the singular point x = 0. They defined minimum limit of a functional …

Presidential Address: The Scientist Meets The Robots, P. S. Helmick Jan 1952

Presidential Address: The Scientist Meets The Robots, P. S. Helmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Most of us have at hand a simple analogue computer like a sliderule, or a digital computer like an adding machine or a desk calculator. But what can a scientist do when his computations become too involved for these devices? We have all read accounts of the Electronic Numerical Integrator ·and Computer, or Eniac (2, 3) built at the Moore School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and now located at Aberdeen. This giant occupies 1000 square feet of floor space and contains 18000 vacuum tubes, 1500 relays, and has an accumulator, multiplier, divider, square rooter, a function table, …

Science Talent Searches, F. E. Brown Jan 1952

Science Talent Searches, F. E. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In 1948 the American Association for the Advancement of Science asked the cooperating academies of science in the several states to encourage larger numbers of qualified students to major in science. Seeking youth for special important service is one of the oldest activities of organized society. The Incas found beautiful maidens whose sacrifice appeased an angry god. The Babylonians trained even their abler captives such as Daniel and his friends for administrative positions. Schools have been founded to train, without charge or for small fees, preachers, lawyers, physicians and teachers as need for such training was evident.

The Annual Contribution Of Meteoritic Dust To The Mass Of The Earth, Warren J. Thomsen Jan 1952

The Annual Contribution Of Meteoritic Dust To The Mass Of The Earth, Warren J. Thomsen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Meteoritic dust, material of extra-terrestrial origin, has been identified in two principal forms: spherical particles and irregular, angular particles. Proof of the extra-terrestrial origin of the spherical particles is by chemical analysis, from the fact that their formation cannot be attributed to any known natural terrestrial cause2, by the tendency to obtain higher counts of spherical particles after known meteor showers, and by the occurrence of spherical particles at all times of the year in several widespread localities. The diameters of the particles observed range from about 0.005 mm. up to around 0.2 mm.
