Presidential Address: Present Geological Research On Ground-Water Resources In Iowa, H. Garland Hershey Jan 1954

Presidential Address: Present Geological Research On Ground-Water Resources In Iowa, H. Garland Hershey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the presidential address of 1938 before this Academy and in the presence of many of you, A. C. Trowbridge outlined our water problems with the thought that generally such problems can best be solved after they have been brought out into the open. He was correct in his thinking and many of the problems that he recognized are now on the way to solution. Our water situation has changed so vastly in the intervening 16 years that it is apropos again to examine it. However, the mass of data is now so great that I shall attempt to discuss …

A Study Of Student Achievement And Mortality In College Mathematics, Fred Robertson Jan 1954

A Study Of Student Achievement And Mortality In College Mathematics, Fred Robertson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken to obtain a clearer insight into the achievements and the mortality of entering freshmen in college mathematics. In the fall of 1952, one thousand and four (1004) students (nearly all freshmen) enrolled in the college algebra course at The Iowa State College. This study records their successes and failures as of the end of the winter quarter of 1954. Then they had had three quarters in their freshman year, (a summer quarter in 1953) and two quarters in the 1953-54 school year. For instructional purposes each of the 1004 entering freshmen were assigned to one of …

The Evaluation Of Their High School Experiences By The Alumni Of Shell Rock High School, 1945-1950, Sylvester L. Houdek Jan 1954

The Evaluation Of Their High School Experiences By The Alumni Of Shell Rock High School, 1945-1950, Sylvester L. Houdek

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purposes of this study were (1) to ascertain to some degree, from the opinions and judgments of former Shell Rock High School students the value of subjects taken and activities participated in while in school; (2) to find out how generally effective t he school was in meeting student needs, and in preparing students to solve their problems after leaving school; and (3) to determine how better cooperation and understanding between the school and community might be developed.

Types Of Functions, Newton B. Smith Jan 1954

Types Of Functions, Newton B. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Real functions of a real variable may be classified according as to whether or not they are continuous, neighborly, cliquish, or discriminative. The purpose of this paper is to investigate these properties, and to discover how they are related. In this paper X denotes the real continuum E1 or an interval, open or closed, contained in E1. The function f (x) is a function from the set X to a subset of E1. N denotes an arbitrary open interval in E1, and N (x) an arbitrary open interval containing the point x.

Reaction Kinetics Of The Alcoholysis Of Substituted Benzoyl Chlorides, B. R. Bluestein, Albert Hybl, Yoshimi Al Nishioka Jan 1954

Reaction Kinetics Of The Alcoholysis Of Substituted Benzoyl Chlorides, B. R. Bluestein, Albert Hybl, Yoshimi Al Nishioka

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The reaction kinetics of the alcoholysis of substituted benzoyl chlorides was studied. The mechanism of the alcoholysis reaction, which is most generally accepted (1), shows that the overall reaction should be second-order and that the reaction should be first-order with respect to the acid chloride and first-order with respect to the alcohol. This rate study was carried out using a large excess of alcohol as the solvent, thus obtaining pseudo-first order rate constants, first-order with respect to the acid chloride only.

Q And L Difference Scores On The A.C.E. Test, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1954

Q And L Difference Scores On The A.C.E. Test, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Those who have used the American Council on Education Psychological Examination (A.C.E.) will, no doubt, have noted that in a number of cases there is considerable difference between the Quantitative (Q) and the Linguistic (L) centile ranks. This report is concerned with an investigation to determine in a limited way, what significance there might be in the disparity of such scores. In the fall of 1953, 2500 new students entered Iowa State College for whom scores on the A.C.E. were available. From this group, all cases were selected where the Q and the L centile ranks differed by 50 or …

The Determination Of Calcium-Magnesium Ratios In Sedimentary Rocks, Donald C. Boardman Jan 1953

The Determination Of Calcium-Magnesium Ratios In Sedimentary Rocks, Donald C. Boardman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study of elastic sediments has been basic work for most geologists. Field descriptions tell the kind of rock, its color, its texture, how it is bedded, and its mineral and organic content. In the laboratory more exact mechanical and mineralogical analyses are made to add to the statistics. Among the laboratory analyses insoluble residue studies have been a valuable tool in research on the clastic sediments and the analysis of samples to determine the insoluble percentages has been systematized so that highly skilled technicians are not required to perform most of the work. As a result many thousands of …

Generalizations Of Continuity, Buchanan Cargal Jan 1953

Generalizations Of Continuity, Buchanan Cargal

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Let X be a Hausdorff space in which each neighborhood an inexhaustible set (a set of Baire's second category), and let {N} denote the system of neighborhoods in X. Thus N (x) is a neighborhood of the element x. Let Y be a regular separable Hausdorff space and let {M} denote the system of neighborhoods in Y. If f is a function on X into Y and ξ is a point of X, then f is continuous at ξ if for every M(f(ξ)) and for every N(ξ), the set N(ξ) E[x:f (x) εM (f (ξ))] contains ξ as an …

Navigation Instruction Of Naval Officer Candidates, John O. Chellevold Jan 1953

Navigation Instruction Of Naval Officer Candidates, John O. Chellevold

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The title of this paper has appeared in two forms. First as "Mathematics of Navigation" and then as given above. We shall limit the presentation to a discussion of some topics in mathematics which the Naval Officer Candidate has need of, most of them wish they had been exposed to, or which are required for an understanding of navigation. These remarks are based on several years’ experience with Midshipmen during World War II and four summers with the Navigation Department of Reserve Officer Candidate School beginning in the summer of 1949. Our thinking is directed largely to surface navigation but …

A Proposed Design For Utilizing School-Made Photographic Slides In The Secondary School, Everett G. Brower Jan 1953

A Proposed Design For Utilizing School-Made Photographic Slides In The Secondary School, Everett G. Brower

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study is concerned with photography as a means . of constructing supplemental instruction materials. The study was designed to appeal to the educator who is concerned with vitalizing and extending the educational program of the school. Photography has been generally accepted as a worth-while leisure time activity for society, and recently educators have begun to realize its value as a teaching medium. The terms motion picture and audio-visual education have become almost synonymous. As a result, many of the simpler teaching aids have been neglected and have been relegated to undeserved minor importance. However, the use of the simpler …

A Cryptographic Machine, Harry Goheen Jan 1953

A Cryptographic Machine, Harry Goheen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a recent textbook (1) on the theory of numbers Professor B. M. Stewart suggests the usefulness of the algebra of matrices over a finite field for encoding messages. The procedure is as follows. First the message is written as a normal message. Then each letter of the alphabet and each punctuation mark is associated with an element of a finite field F. Then the message is broken up into blocks, each block being a square matrix, and each matrix is premultiplied (or postmultiplied) by a non-singular scrambling matrix C whose elements are in the field, F. Each resulting matrix …
