Temperature And Growth Rates In Euplotes Woodruffi Gaw, Paul A. Meglitch Jan 1956

Temperature And Growth Rates In Euplotes Woodruffi Gaw, Paul A. Meglitch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

That temperature has a direct and significant effect upon growth of organisms is sufficiently well established, not only for Protozoa, but for other kinds of organisms. The measurement of the effect of temperature, however, is not always simple to achieve. When, in the course of setting up controls for another experiment, it became necessary to determine the capacity for growth of Euplotes woodruffi at several temperatures and pH conditions, not all of the difficulties that were actually encountered were anticipated.

Some Photographic Materials And Techniques For High School Biology Teachers, Robert L. Calentine Jan 1956

Some Photographic Materials And Techniques For High School Biology Teachers, Robert L. Calentine

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Biology teachers in the smaller high schools are often confronted with the problem of securing sufficient classroom teaching material: charts, specimens, and reference books. A relatively inexpensive method of obtaining resource material would prove valuable to teachers confronted with this problem. Granting that actual study of specimens is of greater value than indirect methods, it is often helpful to have a supply of supplementary visual aids.

First Forty Years Of The Iowa Section Of The Mathematical Society Of America; Iowa Section By-Laws, Fred Robertson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When an organization celebrates its 40th year it is a good time to review the accomplishments and failures of the past, and to investigate ways to build for the future. Just 40 years less one week and one day the organizational meeting of "The Mathematical Association of America" was held in room 19 Memorial Hall, Drake University on April 28, 1916 in response to a call made by the general assembly of the "Iowa Academy of Science". Thus the Iowa Academy of Science may be said to sponsor the Iowa Section of the Mathematical Association of America and the ties …

The Bluegill, Lepomis Macrochirus (Rafinesque) In West Okoboji Lake, Iowa, James Mayhew

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In past years the life histories of almost all our common game and rough fishes have been studied. The knowledge of age, growth, condition, food consumed, reproductive potentials, and population dynamics arc basic fundamentals in modern fisheries biology. This study is concerned with the angler harvest, age and growth, body-scale relationship, length-weight relationship, coefficient of condition, population trends, spawning activities, and fecundity of the northern bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) in West Okoboji Lake, Iowa.

Criteria For The Utilization Of Teacher Committees In Planning New School Buildings, Robert D. Benton Jan 1956

Criteria For The Utilization Of Teacher Committees In Planning New School Buildings, Robert D. Benton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A neat, marble-columned school building stood on a hill overlooking the bustling main street and the neat, well-kept homes of Hometown, Iowa. The dedication ceremonies for the building had been held late the previous spring, and the bright, well-lighted classrooms were ready for the fall influx of students. The school building had been the fulfillment of many years of dreaming, planning, and working. Mr. Jones, the superintendent, had spent countless hours in laying out the floor plan just as he thought it should be. Interested citizens had offered their suggestions. which had been graciously accepted, and, for the most part, …

Some Uses Of An Oscilloscope In High School Physics, John Ray Bolte Jan 1956

Some Uses Of An Oscilloscope In High School Physics, John Ray Bolte

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Use of the cathode ray oscilloscope in the high school physics class has, in many instances, been overlooked by the high school physics teacher as a means of increasing the student's understanding of certain electrical phenomena. In many cases, the teacher may not be well acquainted with the use of an oscilloscope and, very often, the teacher may feel that the cost of such an instrument is beyond the limits of the typical high school science budget.

A Comparative Investigation Of The Use And Non-Use Of Manipulative Devices In Teaching Seventh Grade Mathematics, George E. Immerzeel

The problem with which this investigation is concerned may be stated as follows: Is the study of seventh grade mathematics more meaningful when taught with the use of certain manipulative devices or when taught without their use? This study is an attempt to determine whether students taught with the use of manipulative devices are inferior, equal, or superior in terms of standardized test results, certain test questions and certain subjective evaluative techniques.
