Soil Stabilization With Large Organic Cations And Polyacids, R. L. Nicholls, D. T. Davidson Jan 1957

Soil Stabilization With Large Organic Cations And Polyacids, R. L. Nicholls, D. T. Davidson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Previous studies at the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station have demonstrated the superior water-proofing ability of large organic cations as soil stabilizing agents (1, 2, 3). A method of combining this water-proofing ability of a large organic cation with the cementing capacity of a polyacid is presently being studied. This report describes the mechanisms of water-proofing and cementing and presents results of the first part of the experimental work.

Science Vocabulary And Teaching, R. R. Haun

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

If it should be necessary to relate the work here reported to a theoretical background or to some current problems, such relationships could easily be found in the developing concepts about the psychology and philosophy of the thinking process and in the current discussions concerning critical thinking and the philosophy of science.

The Value Of Including Chemistry Content In The Study Of High School Biology, Ramon Duane Buckley Jan 1957

The Value Of Including Chemistry Content In The Study Of High School Biology, Ramon Duane Buckley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose was to evaluate the effect of including some definite chemistry content in high school biology. This evaluation was made by comparing outcomes of instruction in two different groups of a high school biology course. The two groups were equated in terms of the intelligence quotients, the sex, and the previous achievement in biology of the class members. The comparative gains in factual knowledge were measured by means of an evaluation test. The comparative gains in appreciations and interests in biology were measured with a questionnaire.

A Proposed Citizens Committee Handbook Concerning Methods Of Studying School District Reorganization, Edwin K. Barker Jan 1957

A Proposed Citizens Committee Handbook Concerning Methods Of Studying School District Reorganization, Edwin K. Barker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A large number of communities in Iowa have been of divided opinion concerning the problem of reorganizing their schools into more efficient administrative units and attendance areas. Many more communities will be faced with the same problem. Bitterness has developed, wrong approaches have been used and incorrect reasons have been put forth to bring about reorganization. As a result, the educational progress of the children of Iowa has been handicapped. There are many reasons why people favor or oppose reorganization other than sound educational ones.

A Study In Predicting Success In Algebra, Leslie Milton Graham Jan 1957

A Study In Predicting Success In Algebra, Leslie Milton Graham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Students of Manson High School at Manson, Iowa, select either algebra or general mathematics, subject to the approval of the principal. Some of the students' achievement records are incomplete, thus handicapping the principal in guiding the students to make their choices. As a result, several students have chosen to try algebra and have failed, and sometimes they have become discouraged and have left high school. It occurred to the writer that, if a predicting device could be established to show the student his chances in mathematics, it possibly could spare the pupil's failing in algebra.

A Modern Approach To Elementary Analysis, H. C. Trimble Jan 1957

A Modern Approach To Elementary Analysis, H. C. Trimble

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recall, on the one hand, that mathematics has grown up in the past one hundred fifty years. With the acceptance of non-euclidean geometrics, of algebraic structures beginning with groups, and of symbolic logic, the very idea of what mathematics is had to change. It took a while for mathematicians to digest the ideas of men like Lobachevski, Galois, and Boole. The Bourbaki notion of mathematics as a 'storehouse of structures' is new in the last few decades.

A Study Of The Relationship Between Twelfth-Grade Performance On The Iowa Tests Of Educational Development And Freshman-In-College Grade Point Index, Thomas William Hansmeier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Objective measures of individual ability have been established as valuable sources of information in the admission and guidance of students at the Iowa State Teachers College. All entering students have been administered a number of objective tests which constitute a part of the college Placement Test Battery:· the American Council on Education (A.C.E.) Psychological Examination, the Nelson-Denny Reading Test, and the Cooperative English Test.1 The scores on these tests, together with the high school record, are the chief indicators of individual ability upon which the counseling program at I.S.T.C. is based. A good many prospective students whose high school academic …

Pascal's Arithmetical Triangle, R. B. Mcclenon Jan 1956

Pascal's Arithmetical Triangle, R. B. Mcclenon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In almost all books on College Algebra, the Pascal Triangle is placed in such a position as to show the binomial coefficients in a horizontal line. This position is appropriate when the only use of the triangle is to help students remember these coefficients; but Pascal had a wider purpose in mind. Pascal's Construction. Pascal first sets up a lattice-work consisting of equal squares, assigning to each square a definite positive integer which he determines as follows. 1. The number in each square of the 1st (top) row, and also in each square of the 1st (left-hand) column is to …

Carver Science Hall, David G. Mobberley Jan 1956

Carver Science Hall, David G. Mobberley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, will dedicate Carver Science Hall on the occasion ·of its third annual Christian Liberal Arts. Festival, October 6, 1956. This building venerates one of Simpson's most distinguished former students, George Washington Carver. In paying homage to the memory of Dr. Carver, Simpson adds its name to the list of those who recognize the richness and warmth of this great and dedicated human spirit. The connection between Carver and Simpson is well known and there is no need to retell that chapter in his life -story here. But succinctly to emphasize that relationship, no words could be …
