Newtonian And Galilean Reference Frames (Of The Special Theory Of Relativity) Defined And Compared By Elementary Mathematics, C. Jake Wolfson Jan 1960

Newtonian And Galilean Reference Frames (Of The Special Theory Of Relativity) Defined And Compared By Elementary Mathematics, C. Jake Wolfson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The stated reference systems are mathematically defined using three dimensional Cartesian coordinates and sets of functions, and then systematically developed and contrasted. The linearity of the Lorentz transformation equations for special relativity is shown to follow directly from the definition of a Galilean inertial reference system.

Effects Of Capillary Permeability On Tracers In The Blood, Victor W. Bolie, Neal R. Cholvin Jan 1960

Effects Of Capillary Permeability On Tracers In The Blood, Victor W. Bolie, Neal R. Cholvin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Numerous advantages arise from a concise mathematical formulation of the influence of capillary permeability on tracers in the blood. The paper deals with a theoretical description of the depletion of a blood-borne tracer under the combined influences of the reversible process of transcapillary diffusion and irreversible processes such as renal excretion and first-order enzymatic degradations. Numerical calculations are illustrated graphically to show application of the theory to typical tracer dilution problems.

A Revision Of A Completion Method For Inverting Matrices And Its Adaptation To Ill-Conditioned Matrices, William L. Waltmann Jan 1960

A Revision Of A Completion Method For Inverting Matrices And Its Adaptation To Ill-Conditioned Matrices, William L. Waltmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An essentially new method for the inversion of n x n matrices, closely related to the method of completion attributed to Sherman, Morrison, and Bartlett, is presented. This revised technique has the added advantages that it can be used for any square matrix, regardless of its conditioning state, and that it can be readily adapted to electronic digital computers.

High School Science Achievement As Related To Interest And I.Q. Among Graduates Of Thibodaux High School, Thibodaux, Louisiana, And Malcolm Price Laboratory School, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Louis E. Barrilleaux

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Numerous articles on the possible causes of an increasing shortage of scientific manpower have been published. Many of these articles have stressed the lack of sufficient guidance in directing capable students in high school toward an emphasis in science. It is pointed out that insufficient guidance alone, among high school students, is a major factor in the increasing shortage of scientific personnel. As a result, the schools have been under criticism.

A Program Of Curriculum Development For The Secondary Schools Of Thailand, Chuang Bejrananda Jan 1960

A Program Of Curriculum Development For The Secondary Schools Of Thailand, Chuang Bejrananda

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Prior to about 1870, Thailand had no formal school system. Education in general was undertaken as a family task. However, as society became more complex, special institutions were developed to promote desired educational activities. Such developments have been gradual, and in large measure in reference to national interests.

A Theoretical Study Of A Randomly Excited Mechanical Oscillator, Victor W. Bolie, Francis M. Long Jan 1960

A Theoretical Study Of A Randomly Excited Mechanical Oscillator, Victor W. Bolie, Francis M. Long

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A mathematical investigation is made of the feasibility of extracting usable mechano-electric power from a critically damped and randomly excited mechanical oscillator. Two different analytic functions are used to approximate practical squared-velocity spectra for the motion of the vehicle supporting the oscillator, and the corresponding expressions for extractable power are developed. Numerically computed results are presented graphically to illustrate the effects of varying the oscillator parameters.

Three Dimensional Pressure Temperature Entropy Diagram, Paul M. Boatman Jan 1960

Three Dimensional Pressure Temperature Entropy Diagram, Paul M. Boatman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Three properties of carbon dioxide, namely, pressure, temperature, and entropy, are combined to produce three graphical plots: (1) Pressure vs. Temperature, (2) Entropy vs. Temperature, and (3) Entropy vs. Pressure. These three plots are, in actuality, the three projections of a three-dimensional surface depicting all the phases of carbon dioxide. The fluid must exist on the surface at all times, and any thermodynamic process will occur along the surface. The general configuration of the three dimensional surface for carbon dioxide is shown, and the areas depicting structures are labeled.

The Effectiveness Of The Mass-Production Technique In Achieving Selected Objectives For Industrial Arts, Michael William Horton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to answer the following questions related to the mass-production technique of teaching industrial arts:

1. Will two comparable groups of student show a significiant difference in achievement with respect to selected industrial-arts objectives when one group is taught by the traditional method and the other is taugh, in part, by the mass-production technique?

2. Will a mass-production project conducted for a period of six to eight weeks aid in the students' understanding of the problems, processes, and methods fo product development and production in industry?

3. Will students who work exclusively on individual projects …

The individual score on this placement test determines whether that student will enroll in 82:20 The Physical Sciences, whether he will enroll in a science course chosen by the student, or whether he may be excused from all required physical science courses in the general education program.

A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal Jan 1960

A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The people of India had long been dissatisfied with the educational program which existed prior to the Basic system of education. The traditional system which preceded Basic education originated with the Charter Act of 1813 of the East India Company of Britain. Only a relatively few persons benefited directly from this system; it never reached the masses. This policy of "downward infiltration" created some complex and unfavorable results. It is important to note in this connection a statement from the 1958 UNESCO world Survey of Education that "owing to defects in the official policies, the position of mass education in …

Notes On Determination Of Carbonates In Soils By Chemical Means, D.T. A., And X-Ray, R. L. Handy, Turgut Demirel Jan 1959

Notes On Determination Of Carbonates In Soils By Chemical Means, D.T. A., And X-Ray, R. L. Handy, Turgut Demirel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various methods for measurement of carbonates in soils were tried and studied. Gas evolution methods are accurate but slow and susceptible to experimental error. Acid neutralization is rapid and offers a fair approximation, but it is affected by many non-carbonate minerals. Versenate methods are rapid and accurate, but are affected by exchangeable calcium on the clay. None of these methods is ordinarily specific for calcite or dolomite. Differential thermal analysis is accurate and specific for calcite or dolomite. Best results were obtained by measuring peak height after runs in an air atmosphere. However, analyses are slow and are influenced by …

Waring's Problem, Modulo P, And The Representation Symbol, M. Anne Cathleen Real

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The representation symbol [a,b,c] is the statement that an integer of n-ic type a is congruent to the sum of an integer of n-ic type b and an integer of n-ic type c. The symbol is extended to include any definite number of elements. New properties, together with a list of symbols involving the n-ic types of specific integers, are derived for use in studying Waring's problem, modulo p, for a particular exponent n. Let Tρ (n) be the least number such that every integer is congruent to the sum of Tρ (n) or fewer …
