Effect Of Negative Ions Upon Rates Of Reaction Of Zinc With Hydrochloric And Perchloric Acids, Joe D. Woods, Thomas J. Rider Jan 1961

Effect Of Negative Ions Upon Rates Of Reaction Of Zinc With Hydrochloric And Perchloric Acids, Joe D. Woods, Thomas J. Rider

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The rate of evolution of hydrogen by the action hydrochloric acid and perchloric acid on zinc was measured volumetrically as a function of various negative ion concentrations. Increasing zinc ion concentration retards the rate of the reaction. A four to one ratio of chloride to zinc ion reaccelerates the rate, suggesting the formation of Zn Cl4-- which removes the excess zinc ion from the reaction. Other complexing ions, thiocyanate, bromide and iodide ion, accelerate the reaction as does chloride. Sulfate, like perchlorate, has little effect. The results explain the fact that hydrochloric acid reacts with zinc at a …

A Thin Cylindrical Shell Problem, Thomas R. Rogge Jan 1961

A Thin Cylindrical Shell Problem, Thomas R. Rogge

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper considers the problem of a thin cylindrical shell sector clamped on two curved edges and one straight edge, free on the remaining straight edge and loaded by a load similar to a hydrostatic load. The method of solution is that of superimposing the solutions of three separate problems with appropriate boundary conditions.

Experimental And Mathematical Techniques For Kinetic Studies Of Larval Fruit Fly Growth, William J. Moressi, William F. Herrin, Charles C. Wunder Jan 1961

Experimental And Mathematical Techniques For Kinetic Studies Of Larval Fruit Fly Growth, William J. Moressi, William F. Herrin, Charles C. Wunder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Techniques have been developed in our laboratory which permit the study of growth patterns under a variety of experimental conditions. The experimental subject under investigation is the larva of the common fruit fly Drosophilia melanogaster. Studies involving exposure of the organism to thermal, gravitational, electromagnetic, and magnetic agents have already been conducted. A particular advantage of employing the larvae is that they possess a relatively rapid and simple growth pattern from which experimental constants can be obtained and statistically analyzed. During their 96-hour growth period, the approximate time from the hatching of the egg to pupae formation, the larvae need …

A Drop-Out Study Of The Cedar Falls Community Schools, Bruce Roy Amble

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Every decade of this century has evidenced an increase in the amount of public education being received by American youth. Even so, the magnitude of concern over the number of students dropping out of school has not diminished. In 1900 the rate of students to continue in school until graduation was 6.4 to every 100 seventeen-year-olds in the population; more recently the ratio was 60.0 to every 100.

Guides For The Elementary Teacher In The Playing Of Selected Simple Rhythmic, Melodic And Harmonic Instruments, Lorraine Salome Augustyn

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

"There are no first, second, third fourth, fifth or sixth graders in the elementary schools of Appleton, Wisconsin. Children are ungraded. They are neither promoted nor failed. They do not receive report cards. Under Appleton's Continuous Progress Plan, youngsters move along as fast as their individual abilities can take them. Free from the artificial limits of grade requirements they push on beyond these arbitrary boundaries. In the process they meet the toughest competitive challenge in the world--the challenge to achieve their highest capacity.'

Thus, does Arthur Morse describe the educational philosophy of the Appleton Elementary Public Schools. This philosophy is …

The Principal’S Role In The Library Services In Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 200 To 300 Students, Arthur E. Borwick Jan 1961

The Principal’S Role In The Library Services In Iowa High Schools With Enrollments Of 200 To 300 Students, Arthur E. Borwick

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

For many years colleges and universities have provided reasonably adequate instruction tor school administrators in moat of the areas of their professional education. Required courses in administration, curriculum, and supervision of the secondary school give attention to nearly all phases of the school program. However, it is questionable whether some phases of secondary education have been properly covered, and one of these is the library. Since all areas of responsibility are of concern to school administrators, it is fundamental that the role of the school library be adequately understood and supported by administrators if the library is to make its …

A Survey Of Articles Pertaining To Education Appearing In Selected Non-Professional Magazines During The Five-Year Period 1953-1957, Gerald Eugene Dockum

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There are very few people who are not earnestly interested in education, especially if they have children of their own enrolled in school. Nearly all of these people realize that the school is one of the most important agencies which exert an influence upon their children and which should provide them with the tools to develop for themselves a future of the type parents normally desire for their children. This, plus the fact that education is publicly-supported, makes a vast majority of the people of our country vitally interested in our system of public education.

Hydrodynamics In Some Arctic Lakes, Charles E. Carson, Keith M. Hussey Jan 1960

Hydrodynamics In Some Arctic Lakes, Charles E. Carson, Keith M. Hussey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two hypotheses concerning wind-driven current systems in Alaska's oriented lakes are discussed. The first describes end-currents in the lakes returning upwind due to a hydrostatic pressure gradient on the downwind side. The second describes end-currents flowing in a windward direction and being related to the angle at which the waves approach the shoreline near the ends. These hypotheses are evaluated in the light of recent field work designed to test them.

Scattering Of Electromagnetic Waves In The Troposphere And The Use Of This Technique For Communications, Irvin H. Gerks Jan 1960

Scattering Of Electromagnetic Waves In The Troposphere And The Use Of This Technique For Communications, Irvin H. Gerks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This article is an introduction to the subject of tropospheric scatter propagation for the non-specialist. It opens with a review of various modes of propagation which may exist in a non-turbulent atmosphere, such as diffraction and ionospheric reflection. The scattering of energy in a turbulent medium is then examined, and statistical methods are introduced to describe the resultant field. Special characteristics of the signal are discussed, such as variation with distance, climatic effects, frequency dependence, fading, bandwidth, and noise level. The paper concludes with a description of methods and equipment employed in the design of a communication system operating over …

Error Terms Of Numerical Integration Formulas, Robert J. Lambert Jan 1960

Error Terms Of Numerical Integration Formulas, Robert J. Lambert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper gives a proof that the polynomial function Qn (s) = ∫so t(t-1) (t-2) • • • (t-n)dt does not change sign on the interval (O,n). Heretofore it was generally believed that Qn (s) changed sign on the interval (O,n) when n was an odd integer. The technique of proof is to show that when n is odd, Qn (s) has an upper bound Qn (n-1) for (n-1)/2 ≤ s ≤ n which is shown to be negative. This result simplifies the treatment of the error terms in certain numerical integration formulas which …
