Using Sordaria Fimicola For Teaching Genetic Segregation, Crossing Over, And Probability, Roger Green Isaacson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the late 1950's, American education has been undergoing a critical evaluation and review. This review has brought about some changes in emphasis and an upgrading in science curricula. The American Institute of Biological Sciences, supported by the National Science Foundation, accepted major responsibility for the field of biology and established the Biological Science Curriculum Study (BSCS). H. Bentley Glass., Chairman of BSCS, states: "The aim of the Biological Science Curriculum Study is to place biological knowledge in its fullest modem perspective. To accomplish this aim, a program of research, writing, testing, and evaluation was inaugurated.

A Validation Study Of The Beck Word-Color Association Test With The Minnesota Counseling Inventory, Camilla Russell Bernauer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Educators are always alert and watchful for new and better instruments of measurement to be used in serving the student in gaining new insights into his concept of self. Of all the areas of individual differences which lend themselves to testing there is none in greater need of development than that of personality assessment. Any new test, any new approach to this assessment, is worthy of careful research and analysis. While studying at the State College of Iowa, the writer was introduced to the Beck Word-Color Association Test. In the analysis of two gifted boys in Cedar Falls, Iowa, it …

A Critical Survey Of Recently Published Beginning Piano Methods, Margretta Denouden

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Pedagogy and materials greatly influence the results of all teaching. Changing cultural standards bring changing pedagogical techniques. Piano playing is no longer a luxury for the talented few, but rather a musical activity in which many participate. Today's piano teacher needs a method that achieves quick mastery because many attractive activities compete with piano practice for children's time.

A prediction of success standard based upon these test scores is presented. It is concluded that the BSCS success can be predicted by using the Read General Science and Nelson Biology test scores.

The Nature Of Experiments In Junior High Science, Andrew Stevenson Jan 1964

The Nature Of Experiments In Junior High Science, Andrew Stevenson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Some studies have been made showing the need for what is being done to develop an interesting junior high school science laboratory program. There are three basic types of experiments, individual student, student experiments done before the class, and teacher experiments done before the class, discussed and illustrated. Emphasis is placed on experiments performed by the students.

The Preparation Of Junior High School Science Teachers In Iowa, Patricia M. Schwirian Jan 1964

The Preparation Of Junior High School Science Teachers In Iowa, Patricia M. Schwirian

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The recent concern about educating America's young people for scientific literacy and competence has turned a critical, unflattering spotlight on science education in general and science teachers in particular. It is understandable that science teachers at all levels would be the object of such close scrutiny since they do indeed have the greatest effect on the development of scientists and, therefore, on future science.

A Study Of Selected Employers’ Opinions Regarding The Terminal Education Programs Of Secondary Schools In Davenport, Iowa, Gerald Dwight Clemmensen Jan 1964

A Study Of Selected Employers’ Opinions Regarding The Terminal Education Programs Of Secondary Schools In Davenport, Iowa, Gerald Dwight Clemmensen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the failings of American education today is its inability to meet the needs of the average student in high school. Because of this failing, many young people, mostly boys, will drop out of high school sometime between beginning the tenth grade and finishing the twelfth grade. Because American education does not meet the needs of the average student, many youths, job hunting immediately following graduation from high school, will face a more difficult time in locating some type of employment than their elders did during the early 1930's.
