Age And Growth Of Bluegills, Lepomis Macrochirus Ra:Finesque, From Selected Central Iowa Farm Ponds, Jerome V. Shireman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Population estimates were made on five farm ponds in central Iowa during 1965. Age and growth determinations were made from scales of 638 bluegills collected from these ponds. Bluegills standing crops averaged 248 pounds per acre, ranging from 201 to 321 pounds per acre. Growth rates of bluegills from the balanced ponds were average when compared with growth rates of bluegills from other Iowa lakes and ponds.

Can A Young Man Whose Mind Is On Girls, Booze, Skiing, And High-Class Parties Win The Nobel Prize?, Peter Farb

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Double Helix is a brief story of the structure of the genetic material DNA. As such, it is exceedingly valuable to the historian of science. But another, somewhat irreverent aspect of the book, to be discussed later in this review, makes it an important document for the general reader as well and one that deserves wide reading.

Flexible-Modular Scheduling With The Slow Learner, Eugene Balk Jan 1968

Flexible-Modular Scheduling With The Slow Learner, Eugene Balk

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

At Mason City High School this year something new has been added in the biology curriculum. It is part of the New Design, better known as Phase II Flex. Approximately 160 sophomores are in the program and are known as low achievers for various reasons. One of the reasons is that they are no longer interested in school. The lack of interest may be due to the traditional school day (fifty-five minutes, six periods a day) or to the fact that the students have never achieved success in anything they have attempted in school.

The Prediction Of Geometry Grades For Seven Linn County, Iowa, Schools, Bernice Rosemary Barrow

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was the purpose of this investigation (1) to determine the relative value of the Algebra I grade, the Iowa Tests of Educational Development quantitative thinking score, and the Iowa Tests of Educacational [sic] Development composite score in predicting the geometry grade, and (2) to present the findings, using two predictor variables, that would provide the best possible estimate of success in geometry. The study involved 219 students in seven schools in Linn County, Iowa, who were enrolled in geometry in 1966-67. Selection of the schools was made on the basis of information about the Algebra I and geometry textbooks …

Teaching Beginning Concepts In Mathematics, Mildred Dick Pierce Jan 1968

Teaching Beginning Concepts In Mathematics, Mildred Dick Pierce

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate concept development as it relates to the teaching of mathematics in the kindergarten, and to propose a program of activities to be used in developing mathematical concepts with kindergarten children. Basic to determining the strategy to be used in teaching children is a consideration of the background of information the children possess when the teaching begins, and the background of information and the attitudes of the teachers who teach. Since any program which proposes that a different type of learning experience be used implies criticism of the methods now in use, it …
