Some Relationships Between Morphometry And Thermal Stratification In Some Iowa Lake Basins, James Mayhew Jan 1973

Some Relationships Between Morphometry And Thermal Stratification In Some Iowa Lake Basins, James Mayhew

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thermal stratification of five man-made lakes in southern Iowa are studied in relation to basin morphometry. The lakes were Red Haw Lake, Lacey-Keosauqua Lake, Green Valley Lake, Lake Keomah and Lake Darling. Form of the water mass was compared by three mathematical indices including basin slope, area development and volume development. Strongly stratified lakes had the greatest maximum and mean depth, basin slope, area development and volume development. Lakes with unstable and temporary stratification had lower values for basin configuration. Unstratified lakes had the lowest morphometric indices. The use of these indices for predicting the tendency for stratification of a …

Statistical Analysis Of Second Order Drainage Basins On Four Pleistocene Surfaces, Richard A. Karsten Jan 1973

Statistical Analysis Of Second Order Drainage Basins On Four Pleistocene Surfaces, Richard A. Karsten

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study statistically compares certain morphometric characteristics of second order drainage basins developed on Pleistocene glacial surfaces of different ages and compositions. The morphometry of the basins was found to be partially controlled by the type and age of unconsolidated materials into which the streams are cutting. The analysis also suggests that the Iowan Erosional Surface is closely approximating a time-independent or equilibrium condition, while the other surfaces are in comparative disequilibrium.

How Can I Make The Students See The Relevance Of This Idea? Why Do They Want? How Can I Make My Subject Come Alive?, Robert Hammon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Working from the belief that the classroom atmosphere with its four walls is stifling to student creativity and curiosity, these instructors designed a program which would be basically an ecological study, with emphasis in three areas: social science, literature/communication, and natural sciences.

Some Criteria For Open Evaluation, John T. Wilson Jan 1973

Some Criteria For Open Evaluation, John T. Wilson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Most teachers have felt a faster heart beat at one time or another when their principal enters the room to "observe them teach." Both know that an evaluation report will soon be written and distributed to the district office, eventually finding its way to the board of education. The report may even affect the employment status of the teacher. The reaction of the teacher would seem to indicate "mistrust" of the evaluation. In fact, since 1965, there has been a growing mistrust of evaluation. Why? Specifically, why do teachers mistrust evaluation to the degree that they avoid it in their …

Beliefs Of High School Males And Young Single Men Concerning Curriculum For Bachelor Living Course In Waterloo, Iowa, Fern Betz Hammelman Jan 1973

Beliefs Of High School Males And Young Single Men Concerning Curriculum For Bachelor Living Course In Waterloo, Iowa, Fern Betz Hammelman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The primary purpose of the study was to compare opinions of high school male students with those of young single men concerning curriculum for Bachelor Living, a home economics course for boys-only, offered for the first time in the fall of 1972 in the three public high schools in Waterloo, Iowa. Participants in the study were 108 high school seniors, pre-registered for the course, and 25 young single men from the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area. Comparison of data obtained from the two groups of respondents formulated the hypothesis for the study. Other objectives were to determine reasons given by the high …

The Effect Of Organic Solvents On The Sensitivity Of Rare Earths Atomic Absorption, Keith A. Geiken Jan 1973

The Effect Of Organic Solvents On The Sensitivity Of Rare Earths Atomic Absorption, Keith A. Geiken

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Atomic absorption of the rare earths erbium, europium, and dysprosium was studied in 10% organic solvent-water systems, water miscible solvent-water systems, and in 100% solvent solutions of the metal acetylacetonates. Sensitivity was found to depend on the solvent system used and instrument parameters. All solvent systems used enhanced absorption, with (1) higher number of carbon atoms, (2) tertiary and secondary alcohols, and (3) high boiling point solvents producing the largest increase in absorption. No significant viscosity relationships existed in the 10% solvent-water systems for either miscible or partially soluble solvents; however, viscosity might have been a factor in absorption in …

A Survey Of Attitudes Toward A Public School System, Darwin A. Winke Jan 1973

A Survey Of Attitudes Toward A Public School System, Darwin A. Winke

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the attitude of the public toward the public school in a small Iowa school district, Gladbrook, and compare this with the public attitudes on a national survey conducted by George Gallup. This survey was conducted because public attitudes towards public schools are continually changing and because very little information about the public's attitude towards the school in Gladbrook, Iowa, was available.

Reviewing the literature was the first phase of the study. The literature in this field was divided into four areas: (1) criticism and critics of education, (2) need for change in …

A Correlation Study Of The Relationship Between The Candidacy Examination Requirements And Business Education Graduate Students’ Academic Success At The University Of Northern Iowa 1962-1972, Christine Irvine

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine whether the entrance examination requirements were predictors of success in the Graduate College Business Education program; and (2) to determine the reasons of former business education students for discontinuing the Master of Arts Program. This was considered an important research problem because i t is a first step in changing the entrance requirements to prevent the loss of qualified applicants to the Graduate College Program in Business Education at the University of Northern Iowa. The specific factors under investigation were: (1) the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores; (2) the General Professional …
