Biological Modeling: A Program To Calculate The Input From Observations On The Output, James O. Osburn Jan 1973

Biological Modeling: A Program To Calculate The Input From Observations On The Output, James O. Osburn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the usual situation, a model is constructed, and coefficients are adjusted until the predicted response to a known stimulus agrees with the observed response to the same stimulus in the real situation. Then the model can be used to predict the response to other stimuli. The reverse situation, while it is of practical importance, has not received much attention. This is the problem of finding the stimulus which would produce an observed response. A published attempt to solve this problem contains a fundamental error. The LaPlace transform method is shown to be applicable, but it is difficult to implement. …

Notes On An Iscs Visit, Vincent N. Lunetta

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In late January, 1973, I had the opportunity to work with persons in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the evaluation of their ISCS-Level I program. Some of the local innovations in Tulsa, I believe, are noteworthy enough to be brought to your attention. Included below are extracts from a letter I wrote after my visit to Mr. A. Q. Polk, Supervisor of Science in the Tulsa Public Schools. The notes cover ISCS program evaluation and thoughts relating to my school visits.

Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross Jan 1973

Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"Individualized instruction? — I tried it and it didn't work!" This is the statement that is frequently heard at professional meetings and in visiting with teachers. Upon further examination, it is usually found that the individuals making the statement only tried an individualized approach for a very short period of time. The frustrations they had experienced were usually that l) most kids sat around doing nothing, 2) it was impossible to manage the paperwork in keeping track of where each student was, and 3) the time required to develop individualized units and materials just wasn't worth the reward in terms …

Secondary Science Training Program Enrichment For High School Students, Edward L. Pizzini

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

We live in an environment where the success of many educational programs are directly proportional to the amount of external funds appropriated. When federal funding for a program dries up, unfortunately, the program may come to an end. This end is in sight for many of the Secondary Science Training Programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation throughout the nation. However, at the University of Iowa, the SSTP programs are i n t he process of expanding beyond a firm foundation.

Some Reasons For Not Working Toward A Humanistic System

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

There is only one acceptable excuse for not changing: If you really are comfortable with what you are doing and if your students tell you they are really comfortable, then don't change. Ask your students and see how they feel. If you say you'd like to change but can't for any of the reasons above, you're copping out!

Project Assist: A Plan Of Action, Daniel S. Sheldon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A plan of action to improve mathematics, social science, and science education has emerged as a result of over two years of meetings and planning conferences with school personnel representing all academic levels of education in Iowa. In addition, a seven-week Leadership Development Conference (LDC) was held this summer at The University of Iowa involving the regional coordinators and many of their "team" chairmen representing one of the various emphases of Project ASSIST, i.e., in-service and pre-service programs, community involvement, assessment, and student programs. Seventeen coordinators and over thirty program chairmen participated in the LDC.

Teaching For Affective Learning, Gary E. Downs Jan 1973

Teaching For Affective Learning, Gary E. Downs

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

During the last ten years, many innovations have been aimed at reconstructing science education from kindergarten through high school. These efforts have produced more up- to-date information which was supposed to reflect more nearly the scientific enterprise as it is today. Gallagher (1971) contends that the course-content improvement projects have failed to show this, and they have failed to show that science is a significant cultural force.

The Experimental Determination Of The Eddy Current Effects On The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Of Aluminum Wires, Mark Allen Butterworth Jan 1973

The Experimental Determination Of The Eddy Current Effects On The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Of Aluminum Wires, Mark Allen Butterworth

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An experimental determination has been made of the eddy current effects on the nuclear magnetic resonance lineshapes of Al²⁷ wires. Eddy currents in the metal result from the applied radio frequency (r-f) field used to obtain resonance. Due to the induced eddy currents, this r-f magnetic field is attenuated and its phase is shifted as it progresses toward the center of the sample. A quantity defined as the skin depth is a measure of this attenuation. As a result of the attenuation and phase shift of the r-f magnetic field, the resultant lineshape of a given mode of the resonance …

Gas Laws In Freshman Chemistry: A Laboratory Experiment, Theodore S. Prokopov Jan 1973

Gas Laws In Freshman Chemistry: A Laboratory Experiment, Theodore S. Prokopov

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The study of gaseous state of matter is included in the programs of Freshman Chemistry and in every textbook at this level. Yet, only few laboratory manuals include an experiment describing the apparatus and procedure for studying Boyle's Law. Experiments describing Charles'-Gay Lussac's Law and Combined Gas Laws usually are not included in laboratory manuals, owing to the fact that manufacturers of scientific apparatus do not offer any such apparatus. In order to eliminate this gap in study of gaseous state, in the laboratory at Upper Iowa College an apparatus is used which enables one to study the relationship of …

Groundwater Flow Patterns Of The Ames Aquifer, R. R. Van Der Ploeg, Don Kirkham, L. V. A. Sendlein Jan 1973

Groundwater Flow Patterns Of The Ames Aquifer, R. R. Van Der Ploeg, Don Kirkham, L. V. A. Sendlein

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Extensive field studies have indicated that the Ames aquifer (at Ames, Iowa) approximates a confined horizontal aquifer of uniform thickness and height. The aquifer is partly fed through the channel beds of two surface streams, the Skunk River and Squaw Creek. Part of the boundary of the Ames Aquifer is formed by a till layer that can be considered impervious. Pumping tests have indicated that the Skunk River and Squaw Creek maintain nearly a constant head distribution along the boundaries of the aquifer while the aquifer is pumped. A theoretical solution is presented that yields the well discharge, the hydraulic …

Shear Strength As A Measure Of Soil Consistency, G. A. Madenford, W. H. Scholtes Jan 1973

Shear Strength As A Measure Of Soil Consistency, G. A. Madenford, W. H. Scholtes

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Agronomic soil consistency terms have been evaluated using shear strength as a unit of measure. The Torvane vane shear strength device was employed to measure shear strength on pedogenic profiles developed in several parent materials and on unconsolidated substratas of till. Correlations were then established between the consistency class and shear strength. The shear device is capable of placing a numerical value on soil consistency classes. Variations in consistency were controlled by soil structure, bulk density, texture and organic matter. The device can easily be carried in the field and can reduce bias in the investigator's consistency estimations.
