Investigating Iowa's Weeds, Paul G. Jantzen Jan 1977

Investigating Iowa's Weeds, Paul G. Jantzen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The term "weed" is often defined as a plant out of place. A. C. Martin has complained that this definition reflects human bias and that pest plants are out of place only with respect to man's immediate purpose. In nature's scheme, they often serve useful functions such as providing food for wildlife throughout the growing season and covering barren soil, thus preventing soil erosion. Judging from their competitive success with many so-called desirable species, they are anything but out of place.

The Anti-Science Syndrome, Arthur Koestler

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The average person will be reluctant to admit that a work of art is beyond his level of comprehension; but he will, in the same breath and with certain pride, confess his complete ignorance of the principles which make his radio work.

A Pattern Of Eolian Deposition In Northeastern Iowa, Lyle L. Davis Jan 1977

A Pattern Of Eolian Deposition In Northeastern Iowa, Lyle L. Davis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The geomorphology of the Iowan surface in northeastern Iowa has been very controversial from the earliest efforts to explain it. For about seventy-five years it was considered to be the product of a separate and unique glaciation and later as a substage of late Illinoian or early Wisconsin age. It was universally known as the Iowan Drift Area (Kay and Graham, 1941) until about twelve years ago.

Effect Of Export, Environmental And Soil Conservancy Measures On Productivity, Land Use And Income Of Iowa, Earl O. Heady Jan 1977

Effect Of Export, Environmental And Soil Conservancy Measures On Productivity, Land Use And Income Of Iowa, Earl O. Heady

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A national model was constructed to evalute the Iowa conservancy law as it might affect environmental quality, land productivity, export potentials and income of the Iowa and national farm sectors. The mathematical model analyzed 12 land classes in each of 12 Iowa agroclimatic regions and in 105 natural agroclimatic regions. Alternatives analyzed included limiting annual soil loss per acre to 2.5 and 5 tons, reduction of chemical nitrogen and shift of pesticides to organophosphates and carbamates in Iowa while parallel adjustments are not made in the rest of the nation's agriculture. Exports at various levels are evaluated. While full implementation …

Will It Work In Iowa? Jan 1977

Will It Work In Iowa?

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The embankments of many Austrian highways today show on both sides of the road a new installation: game-warning reflectors which are designed to divert beams from car headlamps into the adjoining countryside. The basic idea for the installation of the reflectors has been derived from the studies of the Institute of Comparative Behavior Research in the Austrian Academy of Sciences, which concentrated on the effect on animals of "eyes" and "eye dummies."

Practical Application Of Basic Research In Hydrogen Bonding, Paul E. Rider Jan 1977

Practical Application Of Basic Research In Hydrogen Bonding, Paul E. Rider

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

It has become common in recent years for non-scientists to react rather disdainfully toward research projects that ad dress what appear to them to be highly specialized areas of interest and which, from their titles, offer little good for mankind. Those of us who spend great portions of our waking hours engrossed in these studies tend to over-react in the other direction by holding our endeavors in an exaggerated esteem that tends to preclude an appropriate assessment of their essential merit. As is usually the case, the proper perspective lies somewhere in between.

A Philosophical Approach To The Meaning Of Science, James Slock Jan 1977

A Philosophical Approach To The Meaning Of Science, James Slock

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

It would seem to be a rat her simple matter to define what science is and how it operates. After all, a good portion of our high school and college careers have been spent in science classrooms and laboratories. Possible answers might be that science is an organized body of knowledge and that it operates by discovering the truth about nature through the use of scientific method. It seems equally simple to visualize science as a massive pile of bricks with each scientist adding a new brick each time he discovers a new fact or invents a new theory. Further, …

Ice - The Common, Yet Strange Substance, Dennis Barnaal Jan 1977

Ice - The Common, Yet Strange Substance, Dennis Barnaal

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Ice has been the focus of studies by physicists, chemists, geologists and even biologists for many years. Ice represents a basic example of the hydrogen bond which is present in many important organic molecules. In some parts of the world, ice or permafrost is an important constituent of construction. The movement of glaciers and formation of hailstones represent aspects of ice physics. Cell water in living cells appears to be ice-like. However, ice is still not fully understood. An international conference on the physics and chemistry of ice is held approximately every four years.

"Fore" Physics, Rick Zehr Jan 1977

"Fore" Physics, Rick Zehr

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

I have developed an activity which I would like to share, in the hope that it might prove educational as well as enjoyable. In Chapter 1 of the Project Physics there is a brief history of photography, which in itself is quite interesting, but one picture specifically lends itself to additional study. The photograph of the golfer provides the basis for this activity. The students are asked to work in small groups to determine the speed of the ball.
