Entry Into Elementary Science Through Live Animals, Stanley L. Weinberg

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Some years ago I did a series of animal behavior film loops for the Ealing Company. The film loops sold well. Their distribution has been taken over by a subsidiary of CBS and they still sell. The series has been a commercial success. But I judge it a pedagogical failure.

Learning To Write Chemical Equations Is Something Else, Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Chemical equations are the stock-in-trade for much of what is expected of students in the first semester of college chemistry. Knowing how to read them, balance them, and interpret them in terms of molar ratios or stoichiometry is one thing; being able to write them from chemical knowledge or from experimental observations is another.

The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Introduction, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Iowa has 23 amphibian and reptilian species whose known populations or ranges within the state are so small as to justify their inclusion in the state's endangered or threatened list (Roosa, 1977). This paper is intended to inform the Iowa scientific teaching community of the plight of these species and to recruit help in gathering information relative to their distribution. Most of the information presented here has been accumulated by Christiansen and Bailey (manuscripts in preparation or in press) in their work on the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa.

Float, Sink, Think!, Timothy Cooney

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The following is a typical question asked at the end of physics units dealing with buoyancy: "A barge loaded with scrap iron is in a canal lock. The captain orders his crew to dump all of the scrap iron overboard. What happens to the water level in the lock?" I have asked this type of question to both high school and college physics students. Of course, answers are given which predict an increased, a decreased , or an unchanged water level.

A Study Of In-School Suspension Programs In Area 7 Of Iowa, Stephen Darryl Glass Jan 1978

A Study Of In-School Suspension Programs In Area 7 Of Iowa, Stephen Darryl Glass

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Suspension has increasingly become one of the foremost problems confronting educational administrators in American public schools. The controversy over the advantages and disadvantages of out-of-school suspension has been on stage in the current educational scene. This conflict has evoked public skepticism and some intervention on the part of courts.

Educators have begun to develop in-school suspension programs as an alternative to out-of-school suspension. The major objective of in-school suspension is to have suspended students remain in the educational setting. This change in practice enables the school and community resources to be more readily used in remediating and facilitating the improvement …

A Survey Of Selected Iowa Colleges And Universities And Their Elementary Teacher Education Programs For Ige Training Of Preservice Teachers, Leotis D. Swopes Jan 1978

A Survey Of Selected Iowa Colleges And Universities And Their Elementary Teacher Education Programs For Ige Training Of Preservice Teachers, Leotis D. Swopes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to survey the Elementary Teacher Education Programs (ETEPs) of Iowa's three public institutions of higher learning and Iowa's three largest non-public institutions of higher learning. Using a questionnaire and interview method, the survey was to answer two questions: 1. Do (ETEPs) at Iowa's six sample institutions of higher learning prepare preservice teachers through an IGE Teacher Education Program for IGE elementary schools in the state? 2. Do ETEPs of Iowa's six sample institutions of higher learning prepare preservice teachers for IGE elementary school programs in the state?

A 10-item questionnaire with subdivisions was used …

Iowa Environmental Education Needs Assessment: An Evaluation By Teachers And Administrators In Grades K-12, Debra Elaine Mcrae

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An environmental education needs assessment of the Iowa public schools (K-12) was conducted during the spring of 1976. The assessment was conducted via mailed questionnaire to a randomly selected sample of 2128 teachers, principals and superintendents. The proportionately stratified sample was divided into eight sub-groups1 elementary teachers, elementary principals, secondary science teachers, secondary social science teachers, secondary other teachers (all other types of secondary teachers), secondary principals, superintendents and other administrators. The response rate was 53.8 percent. Responses were made on modified Likert scales. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used for data recording and computer analysis. Information obtained …

The Future Of Man, The Great Disperser, Elmer Rosauer Jan 1978

The Future Of Man, The Great Disperser, Elmer Rosauer

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

We are living in a world which, depending on personal attitude, may to some degree be materialistic in its value orientation, but most certainly is materials-oriented. (Materials are defined here as substances that become useful to society after some form of processing, e.g., mining, harvesting, refining, or fabrication. This excludes foods, drugs, water, and fossil fuels). There are strong indications that the rate and degree of change in the use of materials by our children -and theirs- will reach a point beyond what we can presently envision. In fact, the current emphasis on precarious supplies of fossil fuels has tended …

Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif Jan 1978

Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The concept of mainstreaming rein forces the belief that all children are capable of learning if education is individualized and attention is given to learning styles, rates of learning, and individual capabilities. It is now widely accepted that children with mild learning impairments should no longer remain segregated and confined to separate classroom situations during their entire day in school. Effective mainstreaming addresses the academic and social needs of all youngsters and functions in the least restrictive environment. The basic assumption that the large majority of handicapped children can be absorbed into regular classrooms with adjustments and adaptations in the …

The Cecropia: An Incredible Eating Machine, Linda B. Hoffman Jan 1978

The Cecropia: An Incredible Eating Machine, Linda B. Hoffman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

One of Iowa's most dramatic, native insects is the cecropia moth, Hyalophora cecropia. The larvae of this large, woodland moth feed on the leaves of native trees such as birch, maple, ash, willow, elm, apple and wild cherry (Swan and Papp, 1972). The adults are most prevalent in Iowa in late spring and early summer. In late summer the most prevalent stage is represented by large, distinctive caterpillars. In late fall, the dominant stage is the spindle-shaped, pupal cocoons found attached to the twigs of deciduous trees or in litter at base of trees.

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar Jan 1978

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

How should a specialized science course in high school be taught? Should it be treated as a career education course or as a general survey course? Should it follow traditional methods or should it be individualized? These questions were explored in teaching a two semester course in Human Physiology and Anatomy at Dubuque Senior High School. This course attracts students who plan a post-high school career in health oriented fields, as well as students interested in additional exploratory study that goes beyond general biology. In addition, others enroll for needed science credits. As a result, the course must service a …

Facilitating Inductive Reasoning In The Elementary Classroom: A Novel Approach, Gregory Stefanich Jan 1978

Facilitating Inductive Reasoning In The Elementary Classroom: A Novel Approach, Gregory Stefanich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Educational experiences often tend to leave children with the feeling that there is only one pathway to success. At an early age children are taught to perceive in a way consistent with an adult viewpoint. This is accomplished through repetitive conditioning during which children are taught that an adult, who possesses authority, perceives correctly. As a result, children begin to think in "acceptable" traditional modes and base their behavior on the standards and expectations of others.
