Global Poverty: Comparing The United States And Haiti, Jesika Basurto, Josephine Bergmeier, Destinee Mincks, Kari Wilson, Tanner Korynta

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

About 700 million people live on less than $2.15 a day worldwide. Looking at how poverty affects many people will help shed light on how to lessen that number. This project is used to review the effects of poverty by looking at the differences between third and first-world countries. This project will be using Haiti and the United States as a general baseline for these comparisons. This project will observe the effects global poverty has on education, political, and healthcare systems while analyzing the different methods that are being taken to combat poverty on a global scale. Poverty is a …

Breaking The Patterns Of Homelessness, Jaylynn Easterly, Yaqueline Trinidad, Mya Snitker, Araely Hanson Apr 2024

Breaking The Patterns Of Homelessness, Jaylynn Easterly, Yaqueline Trinidad, Mya Snitker, Araely Hanson

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Homelessness is a global issue that affects people living in all kinds of different environments. The impacts of homelessness are relatively similar when it comes to developed and undeveloped countries. The uncertainty and stress of homelessness can lead to mental health problems including depression, anxiety and many others. When it comes to physical health, not having a stable living environment can make it more difficult to have access to basic needs such as clean water, safe shelter and nutritious foods. The lack of basic necessities often leads to malnutrition, exposure to harmful weather conditions and a higher sensitivity to diseases …

A Comparative Analysis Of Drug Use Policies: A Global Guide To Prevention And Treatment, Elliot Throndson, Lauren Hawker, Patience Kies, Logan Green

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

In recent years, drug usage has increased on a global scale, and with this has come an array of responses from various countries suffering the effects. This study will compare and contrast the approaches of Norway, The Philippines, and the United States. The Norwegian approach focuses on harm reduction, preventative measures, and accessible treatment. The Philippines declared an all-out war on drugs, creating human rights violations and a lethal environment for those suffering from addiction. The United States varies by state in their responses, with many aiming to dismantle harmful federal policy from the 1970s “War On Drugs.” Through these …

An Automated Method To Detect Tooth Brushing Activity With Smartwatch Sensors, Blake Schleter, Marina Avdonina, Rishiraj Adhikary, Dheryta Jaisinghani, Sougata Sen

Research in the Capitol

Nearly half (46%) of all adults aged 30 years or older show signs of gum disease; severe gum disease affects about 9% of adults.

Brushing your teeth is an incredibly important part of taking care of your oral health and daily hygiene. Dentists recommend that you should brush your teeth twice a day for periods of at least two minutes to achieve adequate results and promote oral health.

Currently, there are very limited solutions available to help people easily and efficiently track their tooth brushing activity.

Does Chinese Investment Into Europe Facilitate Strategic Asset Growth In The Chinese Parent Company? The Role Of Entry Mode, John Anderson, Dylan Sutherland, Sean Severe

Faculty Publications

Strategic asset seeking foreign direct investment has undergone tremendous growth over the past decade. This paper first attempts to evaluate the location choice of such investments in Europe. We find that Chinese companies target strategic assets in Europe. The paper then moves to understand the efficacy of these investments in terms of the creation of strategic assets in the Chinese parent company. Our results show the intangible assets of Chinese domestic parent firms significantly increase in the wake of their investments. For greenfield investments, there is a longer time-lag in creation of intangible strategic assets than for acquisitions. However, greenfield …

Effect Of Teacher Social Support On Students’ Emotions And Learning Engagement: A U.S.-Chinese Classroom Investigation, Moyi Jia, Jiuqing Cheng Jan 2024

Effect Of Teacher Social Support On Students’ Emotions And Learning Engagement: A U.S.-Chinese Classroom Investigation, Moyi Jia, Jiuqing Cheng

Faculty Publications

Psychological and instructional communication researchers increasingly recognize the significance of student emotions in determining their engagement in the classroom. Under the direction of Emotional Response Theory (Mottet, Frymier, & Beebe, 2006), this study aims to establish a model of a college instructor’s social support, student positive and negative emotions, and student engagement in learning. It also attempts to extend this research by examining cultural differences in U.S. and Chinese classrooms and how these factors influence teacher behavior and student emotions. The result demonstrates the mediating effects of student positive emotions between teacher support and student engagement in both cultures. In …

The effects of climate change depend on specific local circumstances, posing a challenge for worldwide research to comprehensively encompass the diverse impacts on various local social-ecological systems. Here we use a place-specific but cross-culturally comparable protocol to document climate change indicators and impacts as locally experienced and analyze their distribution. We collected first-hand data in 48 sites inhabited by Indigenous Peoples and local communities and covering all climate zones and nature-dependent livelihoods. We documented 1,661 site-agreed reports of change corresponding to 369 indicators. Reports of change vary according to climate zone and livelihood activity. We provide compelling evidence that climate …

Estimating The Cholesterol Affinity Of Integral Membrane Proteins From Experimental Data, Theodore L. Steck, S. M. Ali Tabei, Yvonne Lange Jan 2024

Estimating The Cholesterol Affinity Of Integral Membrane Proteins From Experimental Data, Theodore L. Steck, S. M. Ali Tabei, Yvonne Lange

Faculty Publications

The cholesterol affinities of many integral plasma membrane proteins have been estimated by molecular computation. However, these values lack experimental confirmation. We therefore developed a simple mathematical model to extract sterol affinity constants and stoichiometries from published isotherms for the dependence of the activity of such proteins on the membrane cholesterol concentration. The binding curves for these proteins are sigmoidal, with strongly lagged thresholds attributable to competition for the cholesterol by bilayer phospholipids. The model provided isotherms that matched the experimental data using published values for the sterol association constants and stoichiometries of the phospholipids. Three oligomeric transporters were found …

Investigating The Effects Math Achievement Has On A Student’S Attitude Toward Physics, Katherine Weivoda Jan 2024

Investigating The Effects Math Achievement Has On A Student’S Attitude Toward Physics, Katherine Weivoda

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this project was to examine the correlation between math achievement and both physics attitudes and specific topics of beginner level physics. This project was studied because of the common issue of students having negative attitudes toward physics. Causes for negative attitudes toward physics are typically researched by surveys. An online survey was given to students at the University of Northern Iowa. Questions about physics attitudes, physics topics attitudes, and math attitudes were asked along with chances for them to explain their thinking. A total of 72 students were categorized by math achievement by both the number of …

The Impact On Growth Of The Scientific And Engineering Practices Throughout The Semester In 9th Grade Earth Science, Mallory Wills-Howe

Graduate Research Papers

The goal of my Non Thesis Masters Project is the development of three instructional units that emphasize the Scientific and Engineering Practices (SEPs) and give students the opportunity to show growth in those SEPs. The three instructional units were implemented in a 9th grade Earth Science classroom over the course of the semester. In all three units students focused on the following SEPs: Asking questions, Analyzing and Interpreting Data, and Engaging in an Argument from Evidence. The content and Next Generation Science Standards that were addressed included: Unit One- Earths Changes addressing NGSS (HS-ESS2-1), Unit Two- Earths History addressing NGSS …

Gamification And Engagement In A 3rd Grade Classroom, Ellen Braet Jan 2024

Gamification And Engagement In A 3rd Grade Classroom, Ellen Braet

Graduate Research Papers

Structural gamification is the addition of elements traditionally found in games into a classroom environment. This research examines the effects of gamification on student engagement in 3rd grade in a math classroom. In this mixed-methods research, a group of 3rd grade students were taught both gamified and non-gamified lessons. At the end of each lesson, the students were given surveys to assess their thoughts on both lesson formats and were observed for on-task and off-task behaviors. This research found that gamified lessons were more effective at improving engagement compared to non-gamified lessons. Future research on gamification in elementary classrooms was …

Evaluating The Impact Of Model-Evidence-Link Charts In Seventh-Grade Student’S Ability To Engage In Scientific Argumentation Over Plant Reproductive Structures, Josephine Libby Jan 2024

Evaluating The Impact Of Model-Evidence-Link Charts In Seventh-Grade Student’S Ability To Engage In Scientific Argumentation Over Plant Reproductive Structures, Josephine Libby

Graduate Research Papers

The MEL has been utilized in a variety of topics, but not plant reproductive structures. The resource would allow students to form connections between provided scientific text and provided models. The goal is to have students understand the text and connect it to the correct model over the model based on a common misconception.

The study also investigated whether the use of these models would gain student confidence in the area of scientific argumentation. Scientific argumentation is a scientific practice a part of the Next Generation Science Standards that have been adopted by the state of Iowa. The middle school …

Measurement: The Forgotten Unit: Introduction To Quantitative Data Acquisition In Ninth Grade Physical Science, James F. Duff Jan 2024

Measurement: The Forgotten Unit: Introduction To Quantitative Data Acquisition In Ninth Grade Physical Science, James F. Duff

Graduate Research Papers

What if you have determined that the students you teach need foundational knowledge and skills that are not addressed in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)? My Ninth Grade Physical Science class provides an introduction to the data intensive subjects of subsequent secondary science classes. Sound data requires accurate measurements. Students in my classes have struggled with layering the metric system of measurement on top of the Imperial system and the NGSS lacks a standard that directly addresses measurement with metric units.

I used the Backward Design process of Wiggins & McTighe (2005) to construct a unit centered on the …

Why Would I Read When The Game Is On?: Reasons Adults Give For Reading Or Not, Emmy C. Nelson Jan 2024

Why Would I Read When The Game Is On?: Reasons Adults Give For Reading Or Not, Emmy C. Nelson

Honors Program Theses

This thesis dives into the ideas of why people read and do not read, beginning in their childhood years. Many different factors add to why people choose to read or why they choose not to read. School plays an important role as to why people choose to read because reading is not necessarily a natural process since it is different from learning how to speak. Reading has to be taught and understood fully in order to read independently, understand the material, expand ideas, and connect with the reading. Without this, individuals can become “poor” readers or have a low reader …

An Analysis Of Artificial Intelligence's Potential In Assessments Of Math Learning, Casandra Tounjian Jan 2024

An Analysis Of Artificial Intelligence's Potential In Assessments Of Math Learning, Casandra Tounjian

Honors Program Theses

Many aspects of math teaching could be impacted by the implementation of AI in schools, but I chose to focus on the implementation of AI in assessments of mathematical learning. A large part of teaching mathematics is determining how students are progressing in their understanding of mathematics. There are typically certain benchmarks that students are expected to reach. For example, in middle school math, students typically learn about equivalent ratios before they learn about proportional relationships. Thus, when students are discussing proportional relationships—think recipes—they can use the language for equivalent ratios to describe proportional relationships—for every 3 cups of water …

Death And Grief In 21st Century America: A Literature Review On Bereavement & Attitudes Toward Death, Jordan Whitney Jan 2024

Death And Grief In 21st Century America: A Literature Review On Bereavement & Attitudes Toward Death, Jordan Whitney

Honors Program Theses

In modern Western society, death has been dissected and neatly packaged like meat at the grocery store. The unsavory aspects are hidden and our discomfort around dying has turned death into a commodity. In typical consumerist fashion, we are sold the “proper way” to die and grieve as a result. Funeral homes guide us through this new experience with the goal of assisting us through our grief. While most report positive experiences with funeral directors’ services, there remains evidence of overcharging and pressuring into the purchases of unnecessary additional services. This thesis explores modern attitudes and practices towards death, grief, …
