The Impact Of Ethnic Minorities Within Quebec Upon The Question Of Greater Sovereignty For The Province, Paul William Gausmann Jan 1996

The Impact Of Ethnic Minorities Within Quebec Upon The Question Of Greater Sovereignty For The Province, Paul William Gausmann

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

For the last several decades the Canadian province of Quebec has faced internal debate over whether or not it should achieve greater sovereignty from the rest of Canada. Since the 1960s a strong separatist movement has arisen within the province that has effectively instituted policies that increased the use of the French language in Quebec while restricting the use of English. Faced with the prospect of an independent or increasingly autonomous province dominated by a francophone majority, the three main ethnic groups in the province--the anglophones, allophones, and aboriginal peoples, have sought with varying degrees of unanimity and success to …

Lessons From Intelligence: Integrating Psychometric, Triarchic, And Mi Theories, Larry F. Herzog Jan 1995

Lessons From Intelligence: Integrating Psychometric, Triarchic, And Mi Theories, Larry F. Herzog

Graduate Research Papers

As intelligence theory evolves, educators integrate new approaches with educational practice. In this review, the history of intelligence theory is probed. Implications of traditional psychometric theory, the triarchic theory of Robert Sternberg, and the multiple intelligences theory of Howard Gardner are cited. Utilizing the published literature and personal observation, the author concludes that future educators will have the benefit of a broader viewpoint of the construct of intelligence than is presently the case.

Spelling: A Consideration Of One School's Curriculum, Robert W. Follmuth Jan 1995

Spelling: A Consideration Of One School's Curriculum, Robert W. Follmuth

Graduate Research Papers

Spelling is" the foundation of reading and the greatest ornament of writing," according to Noah Webster in 1783 (Venezky, 1980, p. 26). The interest of scholars and educators in spelling has risen and fallen over the years, but the public perception of its importance has remained strikingly constant. Americans sometimes perceive spelling to be the very soul and fiber of education and even society. According to Templeton (1992), spelling has been the bedrock of literacy, the barometer of intelligence, the measure of our school's successes.

Abraham Tannenbaum's Five Factors Of Giftedness As Reflected In The Life Of American Artist, Georgia O'Keefe, Randi Lou Dingman Kennedy Jan 1995

Abraham Tannenbaum's Five Factors Of Giftedness As Reflected In The Life Of American Artist, Georgia O'Keefe, Randi Lou Dingman Kennedy

Graduate Research Papers

This research paper presents an analysis and discussion of Abraham Tannenbaum's five factors of giftedness as evidenced in the life of the eminent American painter, Georgia O'Keeffe. It includes a brief biography of Tannenbaum, a description of his theory, and an analysis of the existence of those factors in the life of O'Keeffe. Examined are the factors of general ability, special ability, nonintellective traits, environmental factors, and chance factors. In this case, it is evident that achieved eminence did depend, to some degree, upon the interweaving of these factors. Thus, they should receive consideration as part of the identification process …

Practices And Procedures In The Identification Of Gifted African-American Secondary Students, Mary A. Roach Jan 1995

Practices And Procedures In The Identification Of Gifted African-American Secondary Students, Mary A. Roach

Graduate Research Papers

The identification of gifted African-American students is a critical issue in the field of education for the gifted. It raises a number of questions regarding equity issues with respect to identification of culturally diverse populations as well as to the types of service to be provided to these students. 1 Researchers and writers have offered many reasons for the under representation of minority students in gifted programs. However, field practitioners want answers, and they want to know what to do. This writer is a field practitioner in a large urban high school with an interest in the low ratio of …

Retellings To Assess Comprehension Of Expository Text, Eileen M. Toillion Jan 1995

Retellings To Assess Comprehension Of Expository Text, Eileen M. Toillion

Graduate Research Papers

Chapter I was implemented in 1965 as a federally funded supplemental program to assist disadvantaged children in becoming better readers. Since that time changes have occurred in reading instruction and assessment. Traditionally, instruction focused on phonics to decode and question and answer tests to assess comprehension. Today, teachers stress phonics less and use authentic assessments to evaluate comprehension. This study sought to determine if retellings would improve comprehension of expository text following instruction in the conventions of expository text. Five, third grade, Chapter I students (four girls and one boy) rendered a pre-instruction retelling, followed by instruction in the conventions …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Terry L. Strait Jan 1995

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Terry L. Strait

Graduate Research Papers

As I reflect upon becoming an educator, I found myself reminiscing about the people who shared in forming my values and vision. It was a group of people who through their thoughts and actions motivated me into becoming a teacher and continuing my education to become an administrator. As a non-traditional student, I have gathered many thoughts, feelings, and emotions about education and my role as an educator. I have been molded by those around me who I thought were effective teachers and great role models.

The Gifted Learning-Disabled Child: Inherent Problems In The Identification Process, Kimberly M. Nunez Jan 1995

The Gifted Learning-Disabled Child: Inherent Problems In The Identification Process, Kimberly M. Nunez

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this literature review was to investigate a special group of students that are both gifted and learning disabled. Once the literature evidenced the existence of such a special population, a list of their characteristics was subsequently drawn from the literature review. In addition, specific identification procedures to nominate, screen, and select gifted learning-disabled students were compiled and examined. Based on the review of the literature, it was concluded that educators possess a very limited or stereotypical knowledge about gifted learning-disabled children and youth that may keep these children from being identified for participation in appropriate school programs.

Re-Imagining "Intellectual Work": Historical Conceptions And Rhetoric, Margaret J. Marshall Jan 1995

Re-Imagining "Intellectual Work": Historical Conceptions And Rhetoric, Margaret J. Marshall

Iowa Journal of Communication

Most of us who work in universities are accustomed to the tripartite division of our efforts into scholarship, teaching and service. We know that these areas are not regarded equally in the profession at large nor in our individual institutions. However commonplace this division and privileging, the practices that constitute our professional lives are historically and culturally constructed and supported by a set of rhetorical practices that are largely unexamined yet alterable. If we are to think about re-conceiving our professional work, then, we might well begin by attending more carefully to the rhetorical constructions that inscribe these divisions and …

Since 1965, when Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was enacted, federal aid has been provided to enable extra instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics to disadvantaged children. Throughout the past three decades, the laws governing Title I/Chapter 1 programs have been amended several times to improve the quality of this service.

Instruction-Assessment Connection Of Inference Tasks For Literacy-Delayed Students, Barbara Layfield Busch Jan 1995

Instruction-Assessment Connection Of Inference Tasks For Literacy-Delayed Students, Barbara Layfield Busch

Graduate Research Papers

The project will explore an instructional program in listening to develop inference abilities, higher levels of comprehension, for second graders who are eligible for a Chapter I reading program. In many cases, children who are not achieving in accordance with their estimated potential are viewed as having lower levels of intellectual abilities. Remedial readers are not necessarily poor thinkers. Usually, their listening ability reflects a higher level of thinking-language ability {Hansen, 1981). Because of the commonality in listening and reading tasks, instruction in listening supports emerging reading abilities {Smith, 1994; Cambourne, 1988). In this proposed project, instruction in inference tasks …

Lexical Learning As A Function Of Categorization Training In Young Developmentally Delayed Children, Deanna L. Coffin Jan 1995

Lexical Learning As A Function Of Categorization Training In Young Developmentally Delayed Children, Deanna L. Coffin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Lexical training is often the focus of young developmentally delayed children's early intervention programs, yet little is known about the most efficient way to train new vocabulary items with this population. Current literature links categorization skills to the rapid increase in normal developing children's vocabulary. The present study attempts to address the issue of whether or not taxonomic or thematic categorization training is an effective means of enhancing lexical learning. Subjects were 12 developmentally delayed children ages 2:8 to 5:11. They participated in four or five separate sessions: (a) pretesting session(s), (b) thematic categorization training, (c) taxonomic categorization training, and …

The Political Geography Of A Palestinian State: Main Problems Of Implementation, Saed Jamal Abu-Hijleh

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study examined the main territorial, political, and economic obstacles facing the establishment of a Palestinian state. The study tried to determine if the classical requirements of state formation can be met within the geographic and political context of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. To accomplish this, the study focused on the main obstacles and problems associated with the following:

  1. The territorial definition and delimitation of a Palestinian state
  2. The determination of Palestinian citizenship and political representation.
  3. The establishment of a viable and independent Palestinian economy.
  4. The specification and execution of the functions and responsibilities of a Palestinian …

Theory And Practice In The Speaking Lab: Speech Assignments And Rhetorical Assumptions, Diane Crosy, Meg Garvin, Kathi Griffin, Ekaterina Haskins, Deborah Hauser, Michael Moore, Takis Poulakos, Kirsten Roberts, Lee West, Barbara Willard Jan 1995

Theory And Practice In The Speaking Lab: Speech Assignments And Rhetorical Assumptions, Diane Crosy, Meg Garvin, Kathi Griffin, Ekaterina Haskins, Deborah Hauser, Michael Moore, Takis Poulakos, Kirsten Roberts, Lee West, Barbara Willard

Iowa Journal of Communication

This essay seeks to carve out an area of convergence between two intellectual practices typically viewed as discrete. Indeed the perceived differences between pedagogical objectives in a speaking lab and theoretical approaches to speech pedagogy are so great that their relationship is almost always grasped in distinct terms. The words speaking lab and theory themselves evoke radically different teaching concerns, sharply contrasting instructional approaches, and keenly antithetical groups of practitioners. Speaking Lab typically signifies a space reserved for students who need 'extra' help before they can be expected to perform at a 'mainstream' level. It is a sign for a …

Is The Error-Reaction Time Correlation In Category Verification Tasks Evidence Of Fuzzy Limits In Categories?, Sergio Chaigneau Jan 1995

Is The Error-Reaction Time Correlation In Category Verification Tasks Evidence Of Fuzzy Limits In Categories?, Sergio Chaigneau

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis attempts to review evidence supporting a positive error-reaction time correlation in category verification tasks. All reviewed models predict that categorization errors will increase when the time needed to make a membership judgement increases. This is explained either as a result of the structure of categories (e.g., as another manifestation of category fuzziness), or as a product of the category verification process (e.g., attributed in general memory models to the random nature of the retrieval process). Two specific models that attempt to explain the correlation were tested. One that assumes the correlation is the result of incomplete or inconsistent …

Code-Switching And Sentence Imitation By African-American Students, Aaron Richardson Jan 1995

Code-Switching And Sentence Imitation By African-American Students, Aaron Richardson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

he purpose of the present study was to identify the accuracy of sentence imitation and code-switching by the African-American child between the ages of 6 years O months and 7 years 2 months. Despite well documented descriptions of Black English (BE) phonology (Dillard, 1972; Labov, 1972; Wolfram & Fasold, 1974), little has been published about the emerging phonology of BE speaking children. Most descriptive studies of BE have focused on the adult system.

The present study investigated the following research questions, "Will African-American children in this study, when presented with the task of imitating BE and IE sentences, code-switch each …

The Rhetoric Of Secondary Orality In Christian Homiletics: The Effects Of The Electronic Media On Preaching, Mark D. Johns Jan 1995

The Rhetoric Of Secondary Orality In Christian Homiletics: The Effects Of The Electronic Media On Preaching, Mark D. Johns

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Rhetoric of Secondary Orality in Christian Homiletics investigates the impact of the oral nature of the electronic media on contemporary American Christian preaching. The long and intimate relationship between classical rhetoric and Christian preaching is traced, viewing rhetoric as the product of a dialectical tension between orality and literacy. Literate professional clergy have tended to preach in a text-based, logocentric style, while for most of Christianity's history, the audiences for preaching have been primarily non-literate, phonocentric people. This often resulted in sermons that did not communicate effectively with the intended audience. Only in the 18th and 19th centuries have …

Germany’S Foreign Policy And The Role Of German Minorities: Czechoslovakia, Hungary, And Poland 1919-1929, Frederick William Hollister Jan 1995

Germany’S Foreign Policy And The Role Of German Minorities: Czechoslovakia, Hungary, And Poland 1919-1929, Frederick William Hollister

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This work has tried to address the confusion concerning Germany and Eastern Europe. When Germany's foreign relations with three Eastern European countries are closely examined, it becomes clear that between 1919 and 1929 the treatment o f the German minorities in these countries had little or no effect Germany's foreign policy. In this thesis I adopted a comparative approach concerning the conditions under which the German communities lived in Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. I then examined Germany's relations with each of these countries. Based on that examination I looked for a correlation between the level of government oppression of the …
