Teaching Fractions Through The Multiple Intelligences, Lisa K. Freese Jan 1997

Teaching Fractions Through The Multiple Intelligences, Lisa K. Freese

Graduate Research Papers

Fractions are frequently used in daily life. However, many students have difficulty learning fraction concepts. In addition, some students begin the study of fractions with negative impressions.

The writer of this article uses Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences to address the difficulties students face in learning fraction concepts. Dr. Howard Gardner, the creator of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences (Ml Theory), believes that it is unfair to teach all students in the same way. Students need opportunities to solve relevant problems that are meaningful to their everyday lives. Rather than concentrating on singular viewpoints and exclusive answers when studying …

Reading Ella Cara Deloria's Waterlily For Cultured Speech, Gerry Philipsen, Eric Aoki, Theresa R. Castor, Lisa M. Coutu, Patricia Covarrubias, Lorelle Jabs, Melissa Kane, Michaela R. Winchatz Jan 1997

Reading Ella Cara Deloria's Waterlily For Cultured Speech, Gerry Philipsen, Eric Aoki, Theresa R. Castor, Lisa M. Coutu, Patricia Covarrubias, Lorelle Jabs, Melissa Kane, Michaela R. Winchatz

Iowa Journal of Communication

The authors discuss the use of a novel, Waterlily, by Ella Cara Deloria, for courses in communication studies. As a representation of the life and culture of Teton Dakotas in the time before substantial contact with European Americans, the novel reveals a distinctive outlook and system of practices with regard to communication. Thus it provides a striking counterpoint to assumptions commonly presented in courses in communication studies. An interpretive framework for examining such a novel, with particular reference to its portrayal of culturally distinctive ways of communicating, is presented and applied to Waterlily. Issues regarding the validity of …

The Linguistic Invention Of "Sophistic Rhetoric", Omar Swartz Jan 1997

The Linguistic Invention Of "Sophistic Rhetoric", Omar Swartz

Iowa Journal of Communication

This paper reviews modern scholarship on the Older Sophists that began in the early nineteenth-century. At this time, philosophers and philologists took important steps to salvage the Sophists from the obscurity of history. However, these scholars did so in a way that continued to confuse sophistic fragments and contributions. The tendency of these scholars to view the Sophists from the vantage point of disciplinary perspectives has colored subsequent scholarship, as evidenced in the concept of "sophistic rhetoric."

This essay, extending from the work of Edward Schiappa (1991a, 1991b), reviews (and critiques) the modern scholarship which constructs theories of "sophistic rhetoric." …

The Use Of Multiple Intelligences In Designing Curriculum For An Early Childhood Classroom, Dawn Osterhaus Jan 1997

The Use Of Multiple Intelligences In Designing Curriculum For An Early Childhood Classroom, Dawn Osterhaus

Graduate Research Papers

Early childhood curriculum implementation is not yet well represented in the literature pertaining to multiple intelligences. For purposes of this project, the literature pertaining to early childhood classrooms where the seven multiple intelligences were implemented was reviewed, and a preschool implementing the seven multiple intelligences has been written. This curriculum makes a difference in how the authors' lesson plans are designed and classroom activities are chosen. The resulting curriculum may also make a difference in how other early childhood educators set up their overall curriculum, and provides an easy-to-follow resource guide of potential use when planning individual units and activities.

Writing Portfolios In A First Grade Classroom, Lisa A. Friday Jan 1997

Writing Portfolios In A First Grade Classroom, Lisa A. Friday

Graduate Research Papers

Much attention has been given to the authentic assessment of children's involvement in the writing process. Such assessment entails descriptive, or qualitative techniques. One descriptive technique is portfolios. In developing portfolios, students can become actively involved in their own learning and in establishing goals for future learning. Thus, instruction can be more closely related to assessment.

How writing portfolios were implemented in a first grade classroom is discussed. Two reluctant writers were particularly focused on as they developed their writing portfolios. These children selected exhibits for their portfolios with support from their teacher. As they developed their collections, the students …

Preservice Teachers’ Use Of Curriculum-Based Measurement In An Informal Assessment Based Reading Clinic, Tina M. Schroeder Jan 1997

Preservice Teachers’ Use Of Curriculum-Based Measurement In An Informal Assessment Based Reading Clinic, Tina M. Schroeder

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated 13 preservice regular education reading teachers' use of curriculum-based measurement (CBM) data under specified conditions. Conditions included: (a) providing preservice teachers with 75 minutes of training in the use of CBM in reading, (b) biweekly CBM administration and graphing during a 10-week practicum experience, and (c) concomitant use of other reading measures [e. g., Reading Miscue Inventory (RMI), Running Records (RR)]. Exit interviews indicated that preservice teachers made use of CBM data in some, but not all, of the important ways suggested in the research literature. Preservice teachers provided the following positive ratings of CBM: (a) CBM …

Strategies For Sprinkling Spice On An Elementary Physical Education Program: Thematic Instruction Comes To The Gym!, Kristine Lee Whitcher Jan 1997

Strategies For Sprinkling Spice On An Elementary Physical Education Program: Thematic Instruction Comes To The Gym!, Kristine Lee Whitcher

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this project was to identify curriculum design strategies that would assist elementary physical education teachers in producing thematic units for elementary physical education classes. Strategies for integrating curriculum were identified in the literature then used to create and implement a thematic physical education project. Specific strategies were explained in detail through examples associated with the project. The strategies demonstrate that thematic instruction can successfully meet the needs of many children, invite new learning, and will assist teachers in coordinating themes with elementary physical education classes. A school-wide Olympic Fest was the culminating event of this project. There …

Fuzzy Logic: An Analysis Of Logical Connectives And Their Characterizations, John F. Hamman Jan 1997

Fuzzy Logic: An Analysis Of Logical Connectives And Their Characterizations, John F. Hamman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The focus of this thesis is to determine exactly which functions serve as appropriate fuzzy negation, conjunction and disjunction functions. To this end, the first chapter serves as motivation for why fuzzy logic is needed, and includes an original demonstration of the inadequacy of many valued logics to resolve the sorites paradox. Chapter 2 serves as an introduction to fuzzy sets and logic. The canonical fuzzy set of tall men is examined as a motivating example, and the chapter concludes with a discussion of membership functions.

Four desirable conditions of the negation function are given in Chapter 3, but it …

Talented And Gifted Programs In The Middle School : Critical Components, Patricia R. Kayser Jan 1997

Talented And Gifted Programs In The Middle School : Critical Components, Patricia R. Kayser

Graduate Research Papers

As middle school educators and teachers of the gifted and talented continue to debate issues such as equity vs. excellence, homogeneous vs. heterogeneous grouping, and cognitive vs. affective education, the needs of gifted and talented middle school students in the general education classroom appear to be ignored. This paper reviewed current literature relating to the needs of gifted and talented pre-adolescents in the middle school setting in order to determine what were the critical components necessary for meeting their unique needs in the general education classroom. From the reviewed literature, critical components identified include content differentiation, teaching strategies, grouping for …

The Development Of Choice-Making In Infants And Toddlers With Down Syndrome, Amy Rebecca Bond Jan 1997

The Development Of Choice-Making In Infants And Toddlers With Down Syndrome, Amy Rebecca Bond

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Choice-making is involved in daily aspects of life. The ability to express choices is particularly important to individuals with disabilities for increasing adaptive behavior and enhancing communicative development and autonomy. However, there is a lack of literature relating to the development of choice-making in infants and toddlers. Research has shown that choice-making behaviors develop in the context of other developmental abilities among typically developing children (Lorang, 1995). The primary purpose of this study was to identify which specific developmental abilities emerge concurrently with choice-making behaviors in children with Down syndrome. The current investigator hypothesized that behaviors similar to those of …

The Role(S) Of Rhetoric In Religious Experience, Gregory J. Books Jan 1996

The Role(S) Of Rhetoric In Religious Experience, Gregory J. Books

Iowa Journal of Communication

Studies of the role of rhetoric in religious experience have most often focused on mass revival preaching from either an Aristotelian or psychological stance. The first assumes that conversion is the result of rhetorical technique; while the second assumes that conversion is the result of mental instability, psychopathology, or mass hypnosis. Both approaches share the prior assumption that the experience is not genuine, but is the result of deception or manipulation. This study examines the ways that traditional assumptions have led critics to make judgments about the genuineness of the experience, which contributes to only a partial understanding of rhetoric …

How To Read Social Movement Rhetorics As Discursive Events, Gerald J. Biesecker-Mast Jan 1996

How To Read Social Movement Rhetorics As Discursive Events, Gerald J. Biesecker-Mast

Iowa Journal of Communication

For many years, scholars of social movement rhetorics sought to define movement rhetorics according to broadly generalizable yet historically nuanced categories of analysis. In both theoretical proposals and case studies, scholars attempted to classify aspects of the rhetorical situation that are particular to movements, including, for example, the resources (human, financial, political, etc.) available for mobilization, the stages (inception, crisis, consummation) encountered in development, and the functions (i.e. mobilizing, influencing, resisting) provided by rhetorical practices.2 Despite a great proliferation of studies and theories, no consensus ever emerged on proper classification schemes. As one article lamented, "Place two movement theorists …

Technology And Student Learning, Pearl Miller Jan 1996

Technology And Student Learning, Pearl Miller

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The walls are coming down. Computers are present in many classrooms or at least in nearly every school building. Internet and interactive video, televisions, VCRs, video cameras, laser discs and CD-ROM players, on-line services, and modems have marched into the schools. Technology use implies change. And change is what we are all talking about in 1990s educational circles. But just the presence of technology itself, or the use of the equipment, does not necessarily mean significant change. Simply using computers or televisions or laser discs to feed information in traditional ways, using technology as the substitute teacher, or as the …

Examination Of Congruence Of Reported Parenting Behaviors Between Parents And Kindergarten Teachers, Marsha Fisher Jan 1996

Examination Of Congruence Of Reported Parenting Behaviors Between Parents And Kindergarten Teachers, Marsha Fisher

Graduate Research Papers

This study examines the amount of congruence between the parenting style of parents of entering kindergarten students and parenting style for appropriate kindergarten readiness as perceived by the students' kindergarten teachers. Parents of forty beginning kindergarten aged students were asked to do a Q sort to measure their perception of the parenting behavior used in their homes. Subsequently, four kindergarten teachers were asked to do a Q sort of their range of corresponding beliefs about socialization for kindergarten students. Responses were descriptively represented by histogram to indicate mean responses of the parents and comparative responses of the teachers. The hypothesis …

Using Portfolios As An Integral Part Of The Writing Process, Cheryl A. Calease Fox Jan 1996

Using Portfolios As An Integral Part Of The Writing Process, Cheryl A. Calease Fox

Graduate Research Papers

The use of writing portfolios to enhance elements of the writing process is investigated. The writing process includes planning, writing the first draft, revising, editing and publishing (Graves, 1983). During the last three stages of the writing process procedures of student participation, reflection and self-evaluation are encouraged and enhanced through teacher-student collaboration. Students select writings based on values where various attributes are assessed (Graves, 1983). Authentic assessment based on criteria informs instruction. The findings of published literature shows strong support for incorporating the writing portfolio as a teaching tool.

The Development Of A Multi-Dimensional Component For A Kindergarten Program, Tina M. Martinez Adix Jan 1996

The Development Of A Multi-Dimensional Component For A Kindergarten Program, Tina M. Martinez Adix

Graduate Research Papers

Educational assessment is in a process of evolution. Old models are being seriously questioned; new models are being developed (Herman, 1992). One reason for this concern is that in too many instances and over too long a period of time, assessment has been directed toward finding out what is wrong, a deficit model that Goodman ( 1992) describes as the "disease" metaphor (Hill, 1993).

Extending The Literature Base Of A Theme Of Friendship In A First Grade Classroom, Melody S. Lodge Jan 1996

Extending The Literature Base Of A Theme Of Friendship In A First Grade Classroom, Melody S. Lodge

Graduate Research Papers

The process of instructional development was engaged in to extend the literature base of a theme in a reading program for grade one. The theme of friendship, a part of the established curriculum, was chosen for the project. Works from the different genres of literature were found to offer many perspectives and related expressive activities. Along with teacher-directed instruction, learning centers, sustaining and specific to the theme, were developed to provide children with opportunities to take charge of their learning. This extended theme will offer a print rich environment in which children can be energized to engage in the language …

Is There Time For Elementary School Science?, Sharon K. Coltvet Jan 1996

Is There Time For Elementary School Science?, Sharon K. Coltvet

Graduate Research Papers

I was made acutely aware of the lack of science education in the elementary grades during a spring, 1995, class at the University of Northern Iowa, entitled Analysis and Improvement of Science in the Elementary Classroom. Currently in American schools, elementary science classes receive a mere 10% of the instructional time (Abell & Roth, 1992). As an elementary teacher of 25 years in second, third and fourth grades, I know this was true in my classroom as well as being a generally accepted practice among other elementary teachers. During my preservice preparation the emphasis of college training and student teaching …
