Temporal Stability Of Speech Motor Programs In Young Adults, Darath Adele Fisher Jan 2001

Temporal Stability Of Speech Motor Programs In Young Adults, Darath Adele Fisher

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The proportional duration model is used to explain one invariant feature of generalized motor programs, relative timing. This model states that although the overall duration of a movement will change based on how fast or slow it is performed, the relative timing, across movement components remains the same (Gentner, 1987). The purpose of this research was to examine the proportional duration model as it pertains to speech in the normal population. This researcher wanted to determine if the relative timing of syllables in a word remain the same across three different rates of speech (i.e., slow, normal, and fast). The …

Building An Instructional Model For The High School Of The 21st Century, Cindy Winckler Jan 2000

Building An Instructional Model For The High School Of The 21st Century, Cindy Winckler

Graduate Research Papers

High schools are the last frontier of change in the K-12 educational setting. In order to meet the needs of today's students, teachers must create systemic change. This research studied ways to build an instructional model for high schools of the 21 st century. The sources were selected from published literature about brain research, lesson design. school reform and studies of education systems between countries. The design of an instructional model for high schools was developed, using the research from literature reviews. Teaching methods, not teachers are at the heart of this reform.

Portfolios As An Alternative Assessment, Carmine Z. Draude Jan 2000

Portfolios As An Alternative Assessment, Carmine Z. Draude

Graduate Research Papers

During the past decade, there has been a shift in paradigms by educational reformers to provide a more authentic means of student assessment in our schools. These assessments need to be multidimensional and provide a more accurate picture of students' abilities. The portfolio is one type of alternative assessment that has proven to do this.

This paper discusses the use of portfolios with a group of ninth grade students enrolled in an English course. These portfolios were a systematic collection of the students' work to demonstrate how (1) they have developed and grown academically and (2) how their attitudes and …

Case Study : The Kjef Student Video News, John Kennedy Wickham

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact and effectiveness of a student video news project that was initiated in the fall of 1998 as the result of receiving a McElroy Trust Fund grant. A secondary purpose was to determine whether the student video news production was more effective than the traditional approach where the principal used the public address system. Three questionnaires were used to solicit input from school staff and students. The staff was surveyed in the spring of 1999 and 2000 whereas students were surveyed in December 1999 after one year of production. Results were …

Portfolios As An Alternative Assessment Strategy In Second Language Instruction, Rhonda M. Borcherding Jan 2000

Portfolios As An Alternative Assessment Strategy In Second Language Instruction, Rhonda M. Borcherding

Graduate Research Papers

With the advent of research on multiple intelligences and individual differences, alternative methods of assessing individual strengths in content areas are needed. An integral part of the process of acquiring a second language involves these alternative methods of evaluating individual strengths. Portfolio assessment offers an alternative to conventional testing strategies for evaluating progress in second language learning. Portfolios provide meaningful methods to actively engage language students in the basic four modalities of literacy: listening, reading, speaking and writing a second language. Portfolios also can help promote and document the five standards of foreign language instruction: culture, communication, connection, comparisons and …

Writing Portfolios In A Second Grade English As A Second Language Classroom, Adriana Vargas Jan 2000

Writing Portfolios In A Second Grade English As A Second Language Classroom, Adriana Vargas

Graduate Research Papers

Student reflection in collaboration with the teacher is an important element in the describing children's involvement in the writing process and their instructional needs. Such description, or qualitative assessment, is necessary as language is a process. Several qualitative assessment techniques that support each other can further children's self-reflection, or self-evaluation, such as journaling, conferencing, and portfolio construction. These techniques can closely relate instruction and assessment. This article describes the implementation of portfolios in a second grade classroom in which English is a second language. Two students, each with different English language abilities, were selected to focus in this implementation stage.
