Skooz Be Hat’In: My Story Navigating And Negotiating Standard American English, Lisa M. Westbrooks Sep 2018

Skooz Be Hat’In: My Story Navigating And Negotiating Standard American English, Lisa M. Westbrooks

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

In most education systems, African American Vernacular English is not considered a language or variety of English and students who speak it are coerced into using Standard American English only. Using autoethnographic methodology I examine my personal language navigation and negotiation of Standard American English and the oppression of language and identity that accompanied it. I use storytelling to draw the reader into my childhood memories and the drifting away of my first language. As a young student and English as a Second Language teacher I have learned from these experiences and share strategies so that others may successfully reduce …

Community Engagement Celebration Day

In 2016, a collaboration began between UNI faculty and students in service learning courses in the Department of Languages & Literatures and classes in English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) at the YWCA of Black Hawk County. Since that time, students in two Spanish courses (Latinos in the U.S. and Advanced Conversation & Reading) and one English linguistics course (Structure of English) have worked as language partners with adult learners of English in full semester and partial semester community-based learning projects over the course of five consecutive semesters (Spring 2016 to Spring 2018). Members of the L&L faculty, Elise …

Language Policy In Sudanese-Arabic Speaking Families, Marwa Ibrahim Apr 2018

Language Policy In Sudanese-Arabic Speaking Families, Marwa Ibrahim

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

In countries like the United States, where English is the dominant language, minority languages spoken in families and communities are at risk of being lost by the second and subsequent generations. This study thus examines the language maintenance and family language policies that exist in families of first-generation immigrant Sudanese residing in a Sudanese community in a Midwest university town of 74,000. The study aims to answer how family language policy, spoken or unspoken, affects the maintenance of the children's first language. The participants in this study were first generation immigrants, identified themselves as bilingual, resided in the United States …

La Discriminación Contra Latinos (Discrimination Against Latinos), Lauren Swan Apr 2018

La Discriminación Contra Latinos (Discrimination Against Latinos), Lauren Swan

Research in the Capitol

This study examines the types of discrimination Latin@ college students in Iowa face in day-to-day life. The study focuses on both covert discrimination (i.e. microaggressions) as well as direct discrimination. Based on the analysis of ethnographic interviews with 8 undergraduate students at UNI, Latin@s face discrimination in three primary ways. The first is due to people making assumptions about them. The second way is through exoticizing Latin@s. These types of discrimination are often not recognized as offensive or derogatory by the wrongdoer. Lastly, Latin@s are often the recipients of language-based discrimination. This form of discrimination has to do with the …

Chicanery And Conspicuousness: Social Repercussions Of World War I Ship Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens Mar 2018

Chicanery And Conspicuousness: Social Repercussions Of World War I Ship Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

The possibilities of camouflage will not have been exhausted until appearances become so deeply distrusted that people will stare wide-eyed at the reality of a thing and imagine it to be false. Effective concealment then will be in open and conspicuous display of the thing to be hidden.

SHORTLY AFTER World War I, an American Impressionist artist named Everett Longley Warner prepared a slide presentation on the procedures that he and others had used in designing ship camouflage [2].Warner was an expert on the subject because he had played a prominent role in the U.S. Navy’s development of wartime …

Introduction: (Re)Presenting (Im)Migration, Jennifer Cooley

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This edition of UNIversitas is devoted to the study of Luis Argueta’s trilogy of documentary films about immigration, and, more broadly, the quest to faithfully represent the personal impact of immigration policies in the 21st century. Starting with abUSed: The Postville Raid (2010), followed by ABRAZOS (2014) and most recently The U Turn (2017), Argueta’s films invite us to reflect upon the ongoing injustices faced by Guatemalan migrants living in the Midwest and broader societal issues surrounding immigration as well. They do this by bringing individual stories to the forefront, by giving voice to those who are typically silenced, …

Qualitative Study Of Realistic Fiction Subject Headings In A Middle School Library, Kathleen Michaelson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to explore the variety of realistic fiction topical subject headings in a middle school library compared to the language commonly used by adolescents in their catalog searches. The research sought to find which topics were most popular among adolescents reading contemporary realistic fiction, how well BISAC tags correspond with Sears subject headings, and how teacher librarians can improve catalog searches for students. This summative analysis examined existing documents to find the frequencies of the various Sears/BISAC subject headings and analyzed the similarities and differences between the two. The study found a wide range of …

The Intercultural Communication Of The Business World: A Review Of The Literature And Application To Colombian And English-Speaking Professionals, Anna Colleen Kelly Jan 2018

The Intercultural Communication Of The Business World: A Review Of The Literature And Application To Colombian And English-Speaking Professionals, Anna Colleen Kelly

Honors Program Theses

This paper studies major works that contribute to the knowledge of the formation of cultural values and how those values are influential in the context of business, especially when it comes to international management. As the world becomes more globalized, business organizations face new challenges as members encounter cross-cultural situations. Experts on international management and leading scholars on culture and business Alfons Trompenaars and Charles Hampden-Turner (2012) explained that the “internationalization of business life requires more knowledge of cultural patterns” (p.6). It is no longer sufficient for business people to ignore their own culture, and to understand and accept the …

La Discriminación Contra Los Latin@S, Lauren Swan

Honors Program Theses

Abstracto

Tom And Jerry: Performative Queerness In Action, Cade M. Olmstead Jan 2018

Tom And Jerry: Performative Queerness In Action, Cade M. Olmstead

Undergraduate Student Work

This presentation’s theoretical focus is a return to the performative dimension of identities and social life. Its vehicle for doing such is Tom and Jerry, a series of animation shorts. This American “cat chases mouse” series produced hundreds of shorts and has become a classic in American media memory. Drawing upon Judith Butler’s queer theoretical work and a justification from Eve Sedgwick, a selection of episodes has been subject to analysis. This analysis lays out basic descriptions of performative gender identity in the series while making a normative assessment of their effects. Ultimately, I claim that through ironic detachment, the …

Imágenes De Identidad: Student Expressions Of Identity And Culture In The College Spanish Classroom, Elizabeth Bair Jan 2018

Imágenes De Identidad: Student Expressions Of Identity And Culture In The College Spanish Classroom, Elizabeth Bair

Honors Program Theses

When one seeks to learn another language, they have the opportunity to not only acquire a new form of communication but also invest and participate in a rich culture. Unfortunately, in many of today’s world language classrooms, learning about target cultures, or the cultures of the peoples who speak the language to be acquired, is treated as being of lesser importance than acquiring new structures and vocabulary. What is more, it is especially rare that students are invited to bring their own cultures and identities into the classroom conversation. In today’s climate, it is vital that students have a safe …

The purpose of this study was investigating teachers' interaction with a young child with ASD when they were using iPad to support language and communication skills development. A case study method was applied. Business-as-usual classroom interaction was analyzed. Utterances were divided into two conditions (iPad-use and non-iPad-use) to compare effectiveness on supporting the child's engagement in teacher-child interaction. In addition, interviews with teachers were conducted to collect more information about their own perspectives regarding iPad use with the student with ASD. Results of the study indicate that child-teacher joint attention and teachers' verbal assistance happened more frequently when iPad was …

English Proficiency And Earnings Of U.S. Immigrants, Toni F. Moeller Jan 2018

English Proficiency And Earnings Of U.S. Immigrants, Toni F. Moeller

Honors Program Theses

Every year thousands of immigrants come to the United States and look to join the labor force. Most of these immigrants have a first language that is not English. This study analyzes how wage income, business and farm income, and investment income are affected by English proficiency in 2004, 2009, and 2014. I use data from the American Community Survey and a log-linear econometric model to explore this relationship. I conclude that wage income and business and farm income had a positive relationship with English proficiency in 2004, 2009, and 2014 whereas investment income only had a significant positive relationship …

3s2. Filling The Gap For English Language Learning From Underrepresented Language Students (Ell-Ul), Milan M'Enesti Nov 2017

3s2. Filling The Gap For English Language Learning From Underrepresented Language Students (Ell-Ul), Milan M'Enesti

Education Summit

Multicultural K-12 education in the U.S. is facing more cultural competence challenges. Even though, in the last decade, there is an increase of bicultural programs in public schools, a population of students coming from immigrated families are invisible to such programs: English Language Learners from locally Underrepresented Languages (ELL-UL). These students cannot be part of bilingual programs because there are not funds allocated for hiring bilingual teachers to cover a small number of students. Research shows that ELL students have either a high dropout rate or unsuccessful academic performance: ELL-ULs are the underserved part of this population of students. This …

2d1. “You Can Be A Bridge”: Toward Cultural Citizenship In Elementary Classrooms, Noreen Naseem Rodriguez

Education Summit

This paper examines how three Asian American elementary teachers' pedagogical decisions regarding the teaching of Asian American history were influenced by their understandings of citizenship and reveals how broader understandings of citizenship can result in more inclusive cultural citizenship education. The theoretical frame of Asian Critical Race Theory (AsianCrit) was essential to this examination as it centered the Asian American experience in the teachers' decision-making processes, asserting the significance of their common identity as Asian Americans in spite of their personal and professional differences. Through their work, the teachers (re)defined what it meant to be Asian American, to be American …
