Student Evaluation Of Teachers, Rick A. Ironside Jan 1988

Student Evaluation Of Teachers, Rick A. Ironside

Graduate Research Papers

Who was the best judge of the effectiveness of a teacher? Was it the administrator who visited the classroom two or three times during the year? Was it the researcher who has yet to identify what constitutes an effective teacher? Was it the college instructor who hypothesizes in his teaching about what constitutes teacher effectiveness? According to William Rupley (1974) it was the pupil who spent more time each class day with the teacher than did anyone else.

Nursing Home Admission: Effects, Predictors Of Well-Being And Implications For Counseling, Carla Pletsch Janssen Jan 1988

Nursing Home Admission: Effects, Predictors Of Well-Being And Implications For Counseling, Carla Pletsch Janssen

Graduate Research Papers

Admission to a nursing home is a stressful life event demanding changes in all aspects of living. Becoming a nursing home resident was perceived by subjects in Gordon's study (1985) to be the third most stressful life event preceded only by death of a spouse and divorce and followed by pregnancy and retirement. Researchers have disputed the direct relationship of relocation trauma to mortality (Borup 1983), but agree that certain factors increase the older person's vulnerability to the stresses of relocation.

Elder Abuse, Mary Frances Osborne Jan 1988

Elder Abuse, Mary Frances Osborne

Graduate Research Papers

A distinct characteristic of this century has been the increase in population of individuals 60 years of age and older (Galbraith, 1986). Recent medical advances have enabled more people to live longer, healthier lives (Galbraith, 1986). Most affected by these advances have been individuals 75 years and older. The United States Bureau of Census (1973) reported that between 1960 and 1970 the number of persons in the 75 years and older category increased at nearly three times the rate of those in the 65-75 age group. Between 1970 and 1980, the 75 years and over population increased an additional 2.4 …

Counseling The Older Adult, Barbara Pletz Hill Jan 1987

Counseling The Older Adult, Barbara Pletz Hill

Graduate Research Papers

People in this country are living longer because of better nutrition, better health practices and better medical technologies. In the late 1700's, 2 percent of the population of the United States, or about 50, 000 persons, were 65 years of age or older. In 1900, 4 percent, or about 3.1 million persons were older Americans, and in 1980, the census revealed that there were more than. 11 percent, or about 25.5 million persons 65 years old or older. By 1982, that number had already increased to 26.6 million. The number of older persons has shown a net increase of 1600 …

Changing Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward The Elderly, Kay C. Froehner Jan 1987

Changing Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward The Elderly, Kay C. Froehner

Graduate Research Papers

The age distribution of the United States' population has changed dramatically in the twentieth century. Decreased birth rates and increased longevity have produced a sevenfold increase since 1900 in the number of persons over the age of 65. In 1980, 11. 3% of the population was over 65 as compared to 4.1% in 1900. This trend is expected to continue as demonstrated by the 1980 census figures. The 1970 census reported 20,065,502 persons in this age group. By 1980, this figure had risen to 25,544,133, a 28% increase in ten years. It is further estimated that by the year 2000, …

The Image Of The Senior Adult In Recommended Realistic Fiction For Young Adults, 1979-1986, Judith Younker Siler

Graduate Research Papers

This study, patterned after Carolyn Baggett's 1980 doctoral research at the University of Mississippi, was designed to determine if recommended realistic fiction published for young adults in the years 1979-1986 was significantly different (p = .05) than that published in the years 1960-1969 and 1970-1978, The "Chi-square Test with Probe" was used to test the frequencies of 40 characteristics. The categories contained three image statements which were used to record characterizations of older persons in the literature. One statement was a negative stereotype, one was a positive stereotype, and the third was realistic based on gerontological studies. Sixteen books to …

Oral Health Status, Perceived And Evaluated Treatment Needs, And Utilization Of Dental Services By Well Elderly Attending Polk County Senior Centers, Sandra Kaye Leggett

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to identify the following characteristics of well elderly attending Polk County, Iowa senior centers: (a) oral health status, (b) perceived and evaluated treatment needs, and (c) utilization of dental services. An oral health screening of 176 senior center participants age 60 and older was used to assess each of the variables. Data suggested there was an increased rate of oral mucosal lesions and edentulousness (without teeth) for this population when compared to Iowans of similar age and oral health status. There was a perceived dental need by 60% of the population, and an evaluated …

Counseling The Elderly With Drug Abuse Problems, Helen Juanita Hadley Jan 1986

Counseling The Elderly With Drug Abuse Problems, Helen Juanita Hadley

Graduate Research Papers

The elderly population is especially subject to adverse drug reactions and interactions since drugs are such an integral part of their life-style (Allen, 1980). As people age, an increasing number sustain chronic conditions and become dependent on drugs in the performance of their daily activities. Whether these drugs are physician-prescribed or self-prescribed OTC (over-the-counter) drugs, there are problems of noncompliance, misuse, and abuse (Krupka & Vener, 1979).

Using Senior Citizen Volunteers In Public Schools, Kari R. Gunderson Jan 1986

Using Senior Citizen Volunteers In Public Schools, Kari R. Gunderson

Graduate Research Papers

A generation ago, the term school volunteer meant "parent" volunteer, and the roles of these volunteers were limited. Most elementary schools welcomed parents as chaperons for field trips, room mothers, and to assist with endless housekeeping and clerical tasks that freed the teacher to teach. They welcomed them at school to shelve and process books, collect money for photographs, and weigh and measure children. School volunteers were virtually non-existent in junior and senior high schools (NSVP, 1978). School volunteers today come from many sources and provide a wide range of services for many schools, even at the secondary level (Purcell, …

Nursing Education In Today's World: Recommendations For A Program In Iowa, Betty Lou Huston Jan 1986

Nursing Education In Today's World: Recommendations For A Program In Iowa, Betty Lou Huston

Graduate Research Papers

The shift from an industrial to a high technology information society is occurring "so rapidly there is no time to react; instead we must anticipate the future" (Naisbitt, 1983, p. 18). John Naisbitt, the social forecaster and author of Megatrends, visualizes that our economy will be based largely on the creation, processing, and distribution of information. Because professional workers are almost all information workers, Naisbitt's prediction means that the demand for professional workers will continue to gain substantially.

The Causes Of Adolescent Suicide, Elaine Ann Pfalzgraf Jan 1985

The Causes Of Adolescent Suicide, Elaine Ann Pfalzgraf

Graduate Research Papers

In one year in the U.S., 500,000 young people between the ages of 10 and 24 will attempt suicide and more than 5,000 will succeed, Jensen (1984). In his article "Adolescent Suicide: A Tragedy of Our Times" (1984), Jensen notes that suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people in this nation between the ages of 10 and 24. He writes that the rate of adolescent suicides began increasing in the mid-1950's and has tripled since 1960. In addition to these statistics, 85% of all adolescents in the U.S. think about suicide at some time and 50% …

The Relationship Of Lean Body Mass To Resting Metabolic Rate, Maryann Butler Jan 1984

The Relationship Of Lean Body Mass To Resting Metabolic Rate, Maryann Butler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous investigators have established predictors affecting basal metabolic rate. These include body size, age and sex, surface area, temperature and environment, and exercise. Conflicting data have been reported concerning the expression of basal metabolism in units of square meters of surface area. It was the purpose of this study to observe the relationship of lean body mass (LBM) to resting metabolic rate (RMR) in college-age males of high lean body mass and low lean body mass. A second purpose was to determine the validity of a relatively new method of measuring resting metabolic rate using a whole body calorimeter (WBC). …

Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith Jan 1983

Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith

Graduate Research Papers

This paper deals with the topic of life satisfaction of the aged, a rapidly growing segment of the population of the United States. The aged are persons found in many groups which constitute our society--racial, economic, education, geographic, political, and sexual. Persons who are considered aged are those who are sixty-five years of age or older. The age of sixty-five can be considered an arbitrary point, since a person does not suddenly become aged. Some persons of sixty-five years are retired, others are not; some may be healthy and active, while others are sickly and inactive; some may be involved, …

Exploring Children's Attitudes Toward The Elderly, Beverly Moore Smith Jan 1983

Exploring Children's Attitudes Toward The Elderly, Beverly Moore Smith

Graduate Research Papers

The number of persons in the United States over the age of 65 has grown faster than the population as a whole. Projections for the years 2000 and 2020 show 13% and 18% of the population over 65, respectively. This growth is attributed to a static birth rate and an upsurge in life expectancy. The fact that 25% of the American voters are elderly has captured attention in the political arena. Despite the growing recognition of the unique problems and needs of the aged, social policies fall short of meeting their requirements for a secure and dignified life.

A Study Of The Relationships Between Measures Of Fluid And Piagetian Intelligence, James Ray Hurley Jan 1980

A Study Of The Relationships Between Measures Of Fluid And Piagetian Intelligence, James Ray Hurley

Graduate Research Papers

Francis Galton (1869) was the first to suggest the scaling of human general intelligence, distinguishing fourteen grades ranging from the most illustrious and eminent to imbeciles and idiots. He sought to show that such intelligence was mainly hereditarily determined, although he was awe.re that most brilliant individuals were reared in intellectually stimulating environments. Charles Spearman, an officer in the British Army and a man of great military tradi tion, likewise became interested in the nature of intelligence. Comparatively late in life he became a professor at the University of London, where he built a world-famous psychological research center. Spearman asked …

Stereotyped Portrayal Of The Elderly In Picture Books, Deborah J. Jackson Jan 1977

Stereotyped Portrayal Of The Elderly In Picture Books, Deborah J. Jackson

Graduate Research Papers

Studies have found that minorities have been portrayed in a stereotyped image in children's picture books. Since the elderly have been considered a minority group, this study examined the portrayal of the elderly in picture books to determine if a stereotyped image is present. Content analysis was performed on thirty-three books. A worksheet was devised which contained the four main categories main character, function or role, physical appearance, and personality descriptors. Sub-categories for each main category were also provided on the worksheet. Frequency of occurrence for each category or sub-category was then recorded on the worksheet. After the analysis was …

A Model Design And Defense For A Needs Assessment Survey Of A Mixed Urban And Rural Elderly Population In A Midwestern State, Christopher J. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study was constructed as an exploratory model design and defense for a needs assessment survey in the state of Iowa. It was determined that a need existed for the development of a comprehensive empirical instrument for a pilot study in Black Hawk County, Iowa which could be employed by the Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging (H.V.A.A.A.) and the writer. The purpose of the pilot study was: (1) to empirically test the model instrument for validity and reliability: (2) to give an analytical review of and argument for the utilization of each question used in the survey; (3) …
