Effect Of Strength Training And Other Activities On Physical Self-Concept Of Females, Denise Cooksley Glew Jan 2001

Effect Of Strength Training And Other Activities On Physical Self-Concept Of Females, Denise Cooksley Glew

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The past few years have seen an increased interest in the psychological benefits of exercise. The personality factor of self-concept typically remains relatively stable throughout adulthood unless a person's life experiences cause it to change. Physical self-concept, a dimension of self-concept, deals with how an individual views themselves and has been found to be affected by exercise. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of strength training on the physical self-concept of female college students. The study used a pretest, post-test, quasi-experimental design. The Physical Self-Concept Subscale of the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale was used to measure physical …

Coping Responses Among Aged Home Health Care Clients : A Qualitative Study, Bobbie Kay Grother Jan 2001

Coping Responses Among Aged Home Health Care Clients : A Qualitative Study, Bobbie Kay Grother

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As people age, they are faced with roles and activities that challenge their intellectual or physical capabilities. People, however, are pragmatic by nature; they seek to use what "works" when faced with predicaments that test their mettle. The purpose of this research has been to understand how aged home health care clients try to maintain valued selves in the face of their declining functional abilities. Data were drawn from qualitative methodological techniques (e.g., participant observation, observational data, and unstructured interviews). In order to provide some structure to this data, a theoretical orientation grounded in symbolic interaction was used in lieu …

Demographic And Reproductive Characteristics Of A Southern Illinois Population Of The Crayfish Frog, Rana Areolata, Michael Redmer Jan 2000

Demographic And Reproductive Characteristics Of A Southern Illinois Population Of The Crayfish Frog, Rana Areolata, Michael Redmer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Demographic (snout-vent length, skeletochronologically estimated age) and reproductive (fecundity, ova size) characteristics were examined in Riina areolata from Williamson County, Illinois. Fifty-nine frogs (36 males, 23 females) were sampled from breeding choruses in March 1996. Hematoxylinophilic annular lines of arrested growth (LAG) were detected in the diaphyses of cross-sectioned phalanges of all sampled frogs. t-tests revealed that male age (mean = 3.53 yr) and female age (mean = 3.83 yr) were not significantly different, but male SVL (mean = 82.78 mm) was significantly smaller than that of females (mean = 89.61 mm). There were positive correlations between SVL and age …

Existential Mental Health Implications For Kin-Caregivers Of Alzheimer's Victims, Brock K. Knoll Jan 2000

Existential Mental Health Implications For Kin-Caregivers Of Alzheimer's Victims, Brock K. Knoll

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to briefly outline assessment and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in afflicted individuals (i.e., care recipients [CRs]) and review relevant research concerning the effects of AD progression on caregivers (CGs) as they care for loved ones. With this background, consideration will be made of how these findings suggest relevant tenets of Existential therapy. The author will also identify implications that could be meaningful to mental health professionals in their efforts to assist CGs as they attempt to cope with the emotional impact this disease has on them during caregiving and after the eventual death …

Children's Perceptions Of Older Adults : Past And Present, Mary Kathryn Hatcher Jones Jan 1999

Children's Perceptions Of Older Adults : Past And Present, Mary Kathryn Hatcher Jones

Graduate Research Papers

This study compared more recent research findings, 1990s to present, with the results of earlier research studies, 1970s and 1980s, to determine whether children's perceptions of older adults have changed. Factors that contribute to and inhibit children's positive perceptions of older adults were identified. Guidelines for facilitating children's positive perceptions of older adults were suggested, and conclusions were drawn from the literature. Recommendations were made for further study of children's perceptions of older adults.

In Their Own Words : Women's Caregiving Experiences, Loralie L. Wiebold Jan 1999

In Their Own Words : Women's Caregiving Experiences, Loralie L. Wiebold

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this research was to examine the caregiving situation as told by women involved in parent care. With current demographic trends such as increasing longevity and increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, along with structural changes in medical care, the family (or more appropriately women), are called on to provide care to aging family members. Although current literature documents the situation of caregiving women, rarely are their voices heard and words included in pertinent analyses. This study is a qualitative and interpretive study using in-depth, semi-structured interviews with women and participant observation of caregiver support group meetings to understand, …

Prospective Memory And Age-Related Impairment, Barry Robert Ardolf Jan 1998

Prospective Memory And Age-Related Impairment, Barry Robert Ardolf

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Research on age-related changes in prospective memory has yielded mixed research results. Some research has shown no age-related impairments, while other research has shown age-related impairments. The present study investigated variables affecting these different findings in prospective memory research. Subjects between the ages of 18-92 were asked to identify pictures presented to them. The prospective memory task required subjects to identify individuals wearing glasses and to indicate this by circling the number on their answer sheet corresponding to the picture being presented. Order of instructions presented to subjects was also manipulated. Half of the subjects received the prospective memory instructions …

Caregiver Burden: The Impact On Aging Parents Who Care For Adult Children, Joan Klekacz West Jan 1997

Caregiver Burden: The Impact On Aging Parents Who Care For Adult Children, Joan Klekacz West

Graduate Research Papers

Contemporary research on caregiving has focused mainly on caregiver burden experienced by children caring for elderly parents. Most gerontological research (e.g., Greenberg, 1991; Greenberg & Becker, 1988) has stressed the movement of caregiver burden and related stress down through the intergenerational family system from parents to children. This research has ignored the impact of caregiver burden and stress on aging parents whose adult children have experienced major life stressors. In this situation, the movement of the caregiver burden moves up through the intergenerational family system as parents assume the caregiving role for adult children.

Attitudes Toward Aging Lesbians: An Exploratory Study, Karen E. Cunningham Jan 1997

Attitudes Toward Aging Lesbians: An Exploratory Study, Karen E. Cunningham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of midwestern college students toward older lesbians. It is hypothesized, due to the commonly held assumptions that older women are "asexual" and that the popular image of homosexuals is extremely negative, that the lesbian identity will go unrecognized by others outside of those to whom they have disclosed their sexual orientation. Variables considered in this study include: (a) knowledge of aging and (b) attitudes toward homosexuality. Two hundred and fifty midwestern college students completed questionnaires that assessed their attitudes toward lesbians, their knowledge of aging, and their attitudes toward aging …

Disaster Mental Health Response, Roberta J. Hinman Jan 1996

Disaster Mental Health Response, Roberta J. Hinman

Graduate Research Papers

Following a natural disaster, most survivors rarely disintegrate and become incapable of coping; however, many are affected and may need significant community assistance (Fischer, 1993). After a natural disaster, many people will be repairing, rebuilding and attempting to resume their lives. Often relief agencies originally brought in to help will have left the effected community. When disaster strikes or threatens destruction, individuals may need mental health services to relieve stress, especially if survivors seem to experiencing a shattered sense of the world as a safe and meaningful place (Janoff-Bulman, 1992). Then what happens to individuals who did not get enough …

Humor And Grief, Shelia D. Behrens Jan 1995

Humor And Grief, Shelia D. Behrens

Graduate Research Papers

Humor is more than just laughter. It is a device that is rarely acknowledged as an important coping tool (Klein, 1989). Humor has been used successfully to diminish discomfort, manage sensitive situations, reduce anxiety, and enhance communication (DeSpelder & Strickland, 1992; Johnson, 1990). Humor is a key element in the human repertoire (Nahemow, 1986). It can be an important means of coping that gives a new perspective to situations. Grief is also a part of the human repertoire. There are numerous emotional reactions (heartbreak, anguish, anger, disgust, etc.) involved in the grief process. Each person has his or her own …

Aftercare Following Treatment For Aging Alcoholics, Rebecca S. Despenas Jan 1992

Aftercare Following Treatment For Aging Alcoholics, Rebecca S. Despenas

Graduate Research Papers

Throughout the last fifteen years the realization of a problem with alcoholism in the elderly population has come to the attention of many Americans. Following heart disease and cancer, alcoholism ranks as the third leading cause of death (Benshoff & Roberto, 1987). Approximately one out of ten people over 60 years of age {27.5 million) fall into the category of alcoholics but only 15% of that number actually receive treatment {Kelley, 1991).

Intergenerational Education, Ellen Johnson Jan 1992

Intergenerational Education, Ellen Johnson

Jane Addams. famous social reformer. stated in Democracy and Social Ethics: The Democratic ideal demands of the school that it gives a child's own experience a social value: that it shall teach him to direct his own activities and adjust them to those of other people's . . . . We are impatient with the schools which lay stress on reading and writing. expecting them to rest upon the assumption that all knowledge and interest must be brought to the children through the medium of books. Such an assumption fails to give the child any clue to the life about …

Sex And Age Differences In The Experience Of Stress, Carmen M. Charles Jan 1990

Sex And Age Differences In The Experience Of Stress, Carmen M. Charles

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study is to determine if there are sex and age differences in the experience of mental health problems (anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse) in a working population. Previous research findings suggest that females experience more problems with anxiety and depression. Also, previous research shows that males experience more problems associated with drinking alcohol. The subjects in the present study are 244 volunteers from summer psychology classes at the University of Northern Iowa and the Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel. The results indicated that males and females differed significantly on the Self-Report Anxiety Scale, …

Education Experiences For The Elderly: The Investigation Of Obstacles And Opportunities, Maggie Grosvenor Bice Jan 1988

Education Experiences For The Elderly: The Investigation Of Obstacles And Opportunities, Maggie Grosvenor Bice

Graduate Research Papers

Education at any age is considered to be a means for enhancing the quality of one's life. The researcher contends that improving the quality of life is a continuous and eternal theme, filtering through the entire life span of any hum an being. Thomas Jefferson was quoted in Ronald Gross' book The New Old as saying "The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only legitimate object of good government'' (p. 259). If we can assume that education is a means for improving the quality of life, then we can sense the need …
