Priorities For Pan-American Geography Education: Needs And Trends, Alex Oberle, Fabian Araya, Sandra Alvarez Jan 2024

Priorities For Pan-American Geography Education: Needs And Trends, Alex Oberle, Fabian Araya, Sandra Alvarez

Faculty Publications

Geography education research in Latin America is uneven in terms of its thematic focus and country-level contributions. Research demonstrates the necessity for a region-wide prioritization of geography education themes that builds on existing scholarship and adapts to emerging needs and trends. The Pan-American Institute for Geography and History, a scholarly society, established a research team with a four-year charge of advancing geography education in the region. Titled “Geographic Literacy for the Countries of the Americas”, the initiative develops research agendas that encompass the diversity of definitions and criteria, scholarly activities, and curricular resources across countries. The purpose of this study …

Desert Or Mirage? An Examination Of Food Deserts In Iowa Cities, Andrew Creasey Jan 2024

Desert Or Mirage? An Examination Of Food Deserts In Iowa Cities, Andrew Creasey

Graduate Research Papers

Food insecurity affects millions of Americans and has been widely recognized as a significant health and economic issue. Because of this, researchers have sought to develop ways to identify areas that are prone to food insecurity, which have become known as food deserts. Food deserts have been broadly defined through a confluence of three factors: low income, a lack of vehicle access, and a predetermined distance from a healthy food retailer. But research into food deserts in Iowa is limited, and the most prominent source of information on this topic, the Food Access Research Atlas created by the U.S. Department …

A 30-Year Time Series Analysis Of The Impact Of Climate Change On Corn Yield In Iowa Using The Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model – 1992 To 2022, Tesleem Ajisafe Jan 2024

A 30-Year Time Series Analysis Of The Impact Of Climate Change On Corn Yield In Iowa Using The Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model – 1992 To 2022, Tesleem Ajisafe

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Climate change poses significant socio-economic challenges globally, notably altering weather patterns and increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events (Seneviratne et al. 2021). This study investigates the impact of climate change on corn yield in Iowa from 1992 to 2022, using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to analyze time series data on temperature, precipitation, and corn yield at the county level. Iowa, the leading corn producer in the US (Xu, Twine, & Girvetz 2016), has experienced an 8% increase in precipitation from 1873 to 2008, with notable effects in the eastern region (“Climate Change,” n.d.). A detrending …

How Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, And Stoicism Relate To Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown Jan 2024

How Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, And Stoicism Relate To Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Rural residents tend to seek help for psychological concerns at lower rates than urban residents (Caldwell et al., 2004; Kirby et al., 2019) despite similar rates of mental illness (Morales et al., 2020). Elevated stoicism and a preference for self-reliance may explain this decrease in help-seeking behaviors, as people in these communities may have a more self-reliant and stoic self-image and therefore be less willing to seek help. Thus, I designed a study to investigate whether rural identity correlated with self-reliance, stoicism, or attitudes toward psychological help-seeking and whether the relation between rural identity and help-seeking attitudes was mediated by …

Modeling Phosphorus Loading Dynamics In Milford Creek Watershed: With Comparison To A Consent Decree Tmdl, Olivia Calvin Jan 2024

Modeling Phosphorus Loading Dynamics In Milford Creek Watershed: With Comparison To A Consent Decree Tmdl, Olivia Calvin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In 1998 Milford Creek, located in northwest Iowa, USA, was included on Iowa’s Impaired Waters List due to its inability to support aquatic life and excessive algal growth that was attributed to an overabundance of phosphorus within the body. In 2001 there was a lawsuit filed against the U.S. EPA regarding the status of Iowa’s Total Daily Maximum Load (TMDL) program. The lawsuit resulted in a consent decree that required the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) to develop a TMDL for all bodies of water on Iowa’s 1998 impaired waters list by December 15, 2009, this list included Milford …

The Spatial And Temporal Impacts Of Land Use And Climate On Avian Abundance In Iowa From 2001 To 2019, Lucas Kaufmann Jan 2024

The Spatial And Temporal Impacts Of Land Use And Climate On Avian Abundance In Iowa From 2001 To 2019, Lucas Kaufmann

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Land use and climate in Iowa have changed dramatically in recent decades. This study investigates the impact of these significant change in land use and climate on grassland bird species in Iowa from 2001 to 2019. Using data from the USGS North American Breeding Bird Survey, the USDA’s Cropland Data Layer, and Oregon State University’s PRISM Climate Data Group, this research implements the use of generalized linear models and multi-temporal MaxEnt species distribution modeling to quantify the varied impact of land use and climate on Bobolinks, Northern Bobwhite Quail, Grey Partridge, Ring Necked Pheasant, Upland Sandpipers, Grasshopper Sparrows, and Henslow’s …

What The Book Of First Enoch And The Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls Reveal About The History Of The Qumran Community, Kenneth Atkinson Dec 2023

What The Book Of First Enoch And The Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls Reveal About The History Of The Qumran Community, Kenneth Atkinson

Faculty Publications

The Aramaic book commonly known as First Enoch is among the most important of all the compositions found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. The fragments of this pseudepigraphal work and related documents provide new information about the use and growth of the Enochic traditions, as well as how their contents influenced the community that collected and placed the Dead Sea Scrolls in the caves in the vicinity of Khirbet Qumran. Research on the Enochic literature in this corpus of documents is important for Jewish studies and for understanding the history of Christianity since the New Testament cites from and alludes …

Faculty Publications

This correlational study associated data on children enrolled in individualized educational plans in their K-12 schools (IEP) and an algorithm-calculated score of neurotoxins at contaminated sites located in each school district. The study also mapped and projected the correlations using Geographical Information System (GIS) technology. These data were populated in ArcMap 10.5 (a GIS software) for generating maps and data to conduct geospatial analysis. A total of 1 Superfund site and 39 CERCLA sites were identified as contaminated sites for this analysis. The majority of contaminants were heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium. The mean toxic score …

This free and open access textbook introduces new writers to some basic elements of the craft of creative writing. The authors—Rachel Morgan, Jeremy Schraffenberger, and Grant Tracey—are editors of the North American Review, the oldest and one of the most well-regarded literary magazines in the United States. We’ve selected nearly all of our readings and examples from writing that has appeared in our pages over the years. A Tale Of Two Rivers: Unveiling Water's Secrets Across Continents, Jace Bell, Mohammad Iqbal

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Dry Run Creek outside of Cedar Falls, Iowa in the United States and New Town Rivulet surrounding Hobart, Tasmania in Australia are two comparable hydrological water flows. From the natural sources of the water flows to the watershed impacts from industrial, municipal, and agricultural practices further downstream, the similarities and differences of the physical, chemical, and geomorphological properties of these two hydrological systems on separate continents will permit further understanding of Earth’s comprehensive ecosystem on two continents.

Water from seven sites along the Cedar River and the Mississippi River and at Prairie Lake, Alice Wyth Lake, and Big Woods Lake …

The Effect Of China Retaliatory Tariffs On Donations From Farmers In The Central Region Of The United States, Jiayi Chen Jul 2023

The Effect Of China Retaliatory Tariffs On Donations From Farmers In The Central Region Of The United States, Jiayi Chen

Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics

The Trump administration launched a series of actions to raise import tariffs against major U.S. trading partners, particularly China. In response, China retaliated against the U.S. by imposing higher tariffs targeting exports produced in Republican-supporting counties. Soybeans and corn are two targeted agricultural exports with the same tariff rates. However, due to the drastic difference in export amount to China, farmers in counties dominating in producing soybeans would have more negative economic impacts than counties mainly producing corn. In this paper, I use individual farmers’ donations to examine the effect of this retaliatory tariff shock from the trade war on …

Incorporating Resilience When Assessing Pandemic Risk In The Arctic: A Case Study Of Alaska, Sweta Tiwari, Andrey Petrov, Nino Mateshvili, Michele Devlin, Nikolay Golosov, Marya Rozanova-Smith, Mark Welford, John Degroote, Tatiana Degai, Stanislav Ksenofontov Jun 2023

Incorporating Resilience When Assessing Pandemic Risk In The Arctic: A Case Study Of Alaska, Sweta Tiwari, Andrey Petrov, Nino Mateshvili, Michele Devlin, Nikolay Golosov, Marya Rozanova-Smith, Mark Welford, John Degroote, Tatiana Degai, Stanislav Ksenofontov

Faculty Publications

The discourse on vulnerability to COVID-19 or any other pandemic is about the susceptibility to the effects of disease outbreaks. Over time, vulnerability has been assessed through various indices calculated using a confluence of societal factors. However, categorising Arctic communities, without considering their socioeconomic, cultural and demographic uniqueness, into the high and low continuum of vulnerability using universal indicators will undoubtedly result in the underestimation of the communities' capacity to withstand and recover from pandemic exposure. By recognising vulnerability and resilience as two separate but interrelated dimensions, this study reviews the Arctic communities' ability to cope with pandemic risks. In …

Combining Community Observations And Remote Sensing To Examine The Effects Of Roads On Wildfires In The East Siberian Boreal Forest, Vera Kuklina, Oleg Sizov, Victor Bogdanov, Natalia Krasnoshtanova, Arina Morozova, Andrey N. Petrov

Faculty Publications

The paper is aimed at assessing the associations between the road networks geography and dynamics of wildfire events in the East Siberian boreal forest. We examined the relationship between the function of roads, their use, and management and the wildfire ignition, propagation, and termination during the catastrophic fire season of 2016 in the Irkutsk Region of Russia. Document analysis and interviews were utilized to identify main forest users and road infrastructure functional types and examine wildfire management practices. We combined community observations and satellite remotely sensed data to assess relationships between the location, extent, and timing of wildfires and different …

Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, Stoicism, And Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown Apr 2023

Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, Stoicism, And Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

In the United States, 21% of adults have a mental illness. Prevalence of mental illness tends to be highest among young adults (18-25 years old) and lowest among older adults (50 years or older; National Institute of Mental Health, 2020).

Rural communities represent 19% of the United States population (Oser et al., 2022). Research has shown that rates of mental illness are the same in rural areas as in urban areas (Morales et al., 2020) and that suicide rates are significantly higher within rural communities (Brunk, 2010). Despite this, there is a significant lack of help-seeking among rural residents (Morales …
