A Next Generation Science Standards (Ngss) Aligned 3rd Grade Weather Unit, Jennifer Hageman

Graduate Research Papers

This unit is the culmination of work on taking the NGSS for weather and climate and creating an inclusive unit for third grade students. At the time this unit was started, many teachers were taking the NGSS and creating units for the classrooms. This unit integrates math, literacy, and social studies standards to help explore the NGSS for weather and climate.

After completion of this unit it was given to two reviewers in the field of teaching. They read the unit and provided feedback for improvement. After review of the feedback it was noted that adaptations for students need to …

Local Observations Of Climate Change And Impacts On Livelihoods In Kamchatka, Russia, Victoria N. Sharakhmatova, Drew Gerkey Jan 2023

Local Observations Of Climate Change And Impacts On Livelihoods In Kamchatka, Russia, Victoria N. Sharakhmatova, Drew Gerkey

Faculty Publications

Indigenous communities throughout the Arctic are confronting unprecedented challenges arising from anthropogenic climate change. The inextricable connections between their livelihoods and social and environmental systems, combined with a rich foundation of individual and inter-generational collective experience and knowledge, make Indigenous communities particularly adept at observing changes in climate and understanding their impacts. In this chapter, we apply the protocol from the Local Indicators of Climate Change Impacts project to document observations and impacts of climate change in Khailino, an Indigenous community on the northern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Northeast Siberia, Russia. We use individual interviews to identify what …

Photojournalism, Public Health, And Politicization: Analyzing Photographic News Coverage Of Health Crises In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Hans C. Schmidt Jan 2023

Photojournalism, Public Health, And Politicization: Analyzing Photographic News Coverage Of Health Crises In The 20th And 21st Centuries, Hans C. Schmidt

Iowa Journal of Communication

While political division has been present in the American press since its start, politicized and polarized content is now stretching beyond straightforward political news – where such content might be expected – and is increasingly seen in other news categories, including science, medical, and health journalism. This development has been especially notable during the COVID-19 pandemic, when medical and health reporting frequently became coopted by a political narrative. This study builds on research into the politicization of pandemic and medical reporting with an investigation of pandemic-era photojournalism. Using a content analysis, this study aims to provide greater insight into the …

The Influence Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Factors In A Trap-Neuter-Release (Tnr) Program And Its Effects On Urban And Rural Demographics As A Long-Term Solution For Community Cat Management, Hannah E. Litke

Graduate Research Papers

Trap-neuter-release is a humane alternative solution to aid in decreasing community cat populations. This research paper evaluates the intrinsic and extrinsic factors contributing to successful community cat populations, including reproductive success, transmission of feline and zoonotic diseases, population size, cat immigration between colonies, food availability, and wildlife extinction. Additionally, this research paper evaluates and analyzes TNR's impacts on urban and rural demographics. Furthermore, the paper will evaluate TNR as a long-term solution and its effectiveness in decreasing community cat populations. Lastly, this paper provides suggestions for future research regarding community cat populations.

Mapping For Impact: Actionable Spatial Literacy Through Counter-Mapping, Rachel Hansen Jan 2023

Mapping For Impact: Actionable Spatial Literacy Through Counter-Mapping, Rachel Hansen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Counter-mapping is a technique that young people can use to take informed action on community issues through the mapping process. This mixed-methods study examined how ninth-graders in a large urban district in Iowa developed spatial thinking skills while engaging in counter-mapping in their community and the extent to which they used those maps to take informed action. A nine-week learning progression for counter-mapping scaffolded progress variables across three different spatial thinking standards and one inquiry standard. Findings indicated that students improved throughout the learning progression, but some needed teacher support to conduct spatial inquiries. Chances of reaching the upper anchor …

Institutional Navigation Of Oceans Governance: Lessons From Russia And The United States Indigenous Multi-Level Whaling Governance In The Arctic, Abigail M. York, Eduard Zdor, Shauna Burnsilver, Tatiana Degai, Maria Monakhova, Svetlana Isakova, Andrey N. Petrov, Morgan Kempf Dec 2022

Institutional Navigation Of Oceans Governance: Lessons From Russia And The United States Indigenous Multi-Level Whaling Governance In The Arctic, Abigail M. York, Eduard Zdor, Shauna Burnsilver, Tatiana Degai, Maria Monakhova, Svetlana Isakova, Andrey N. Petrov, Morgan Kempf

Faculty Publications

Oceans governance occurs through overlapping, multi-level institutions that often fail to recognize Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination. The International Whaling Commission (IWC) provides pathways for recognizing Indigenous rights. However, observed power asymmetries and cross-level local to international conflicts threatened subsistence rights and generated research and advocacy fatigue for Chukchi, Iñupiat, Saint Lawrence Island Yupik, and Siberian Yupik communities in the USA and Russia. We conduct an institutional analysis of Indigenous bowhead whaling governance based upon lived experiences of Indigenous authors, primary documents from co-management organizations, national agencies, the IWC, and extant literature. We explore how Indigenous co-management organizations increased sovereignty and …

F15 Mapping For Cultural Resurgence: Repatriating Geographical Knowledge Of Kamchatka’S Indigenous Peoples Through Restorative Re-Mapping Of Materials From Early Scientific Expeditions, Semyon Drozdetckii Nov 2022

F15 Mapping For Cultural Resurgence: Repatriating Geographical Knowledge Of Kamchatka’S Indigenous Peoples Through Restorative Re-Mapping Of Materials From Early Scientific Expeditions, Semyon Drozdetckii

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) at UNI

The Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East was one of the last territories to become part of Russia during its colonization of Siberia. Here Russians came into contact with its Indigenous peoples - nomadic Koryaks and settled Itelmens. Just like other Indigenous peoples of Russia and the rest of the world, they faced the terrible consequences of colonization. They were forcibly baptized, Russified and expelled from their ancestral territories. Nowadays, Indigenous knowledge here is largely forgotten. This study will attempt to help the Indigenous peoples of Kamchatka repatriate this knowledge by focusing on geographic knowledge, mainly among the Itelmens. …

Curating A Global Collection Of Grapsoid Crabs For The American Natural History Museum, Nyc, Taylor Pruisman, Amber Finke, Carl Thurman Ph.D. Jul 2022

Curating A Global Collection Of Grapsoid Crabs For The American Natural History Museum, Nyc, Taylor Pruisman, Amber Finke, Carl Thurman Ph.D.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Curation is a powerful tool when accessing information about specialized collections. Many researchers that use specimens borrowed from other institutions often find the supporting information insufficient. Over the last two years, a large collection of preserved grapsoid crabs was received from Frank H. Barnwell, Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. The collection of land crabs has undergone an extensive curation process done by University of Northern Iowa undergraduates. The curation process included identifying species, locating pin points, counting of sexes, rehousing and producing new labels. The specimens were sorted by their species, counted by gender, and their collection locations …

The Geographical (And Almost) Non-Geographical Advantages On Access To Water Resources, Clemir Abbeg Coproski Apr 2022

The Geographical (And Almost) Non-Geographical Advantages On Access To Water Resources, Clemir Abbeg Coproski

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Although water scarcity doesn’t sound like a 21st century problem, more than 1.2 million people die every year directly related to the lack of access to safe water. Malnutrition, lack of sanitation, and other diseases can bump those numbers even higher. An interesting question that very few might ask is: what are the causes for the lack of access to water? There are several answers to those questions, and some of them are related to geography and some of them are not, or maybe both.
