The social studies curriculum is in an era of transition. It is a complex, multidimensional, often confusing, but tremendously challenging subject. Because research and study in this area double and redouble in very short periods of time, educators face the problem of remaining informed of new developments.

As the school librarian participates in all areas of curriculum planning, a knowledge of theory and practical application is necessary. K-12 Science Education In Iowa: Did You Know That . . ., Lynn W. Glass

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The State is divided into 15 geographical areas for the improvement of education in Iowa schools. Each area has a local board of education and the authority to levy taxes. The total K-12 enrollment ranges from a low of 16,876 in Area XIV to a high of 136,719 in Area XI. In general, these 15 areas are of approximately the same geographical size.

The problem to be studied focuses on the need for media centers and media programs in the elementary schools. The Standards for School Media Programs published jointly by the Department of Audio-Visual Instruction of NEA and the American Association of School Librarians in June 1969 defines the media center as "a learning center in the school where a full range of print and audiovisual media, necessary equipment, and services from media specialists are accessible to students and teachers." Charles Lamb was an essayist held in the highest esteem in the English literary world. He was a man small in stature and fragile in appearance, but strong in character and quick of wit. Children's books have been a source of delight to them; they have evoked both tears and laughter from young audiences. The illustrator has come to be a partner in the creation of hooks for children. The term children's literature now includes the efforts of both illustrators and authors. It was not always so. For many years children read adult books because there was no such thing as a storybook for children. When they came, the books for children were dull fare. They were moralizing with few, if any, illustrations.

After relative inactivity in Southern letters, there occurred what is called. the Southern Literary Renaissance. Critics have since tried to account for it. One effort is the attempt to identify basic themes in the works. One persistent theme is that of religious or moral conflict, involving a stern Calvinism and a pervasive sense of guilt. Noticed too is the element of paradox as an outstanding characteristic of the South a.nd of the Southern character. w. J.
