Research for this study covers the 1974-1975 school year and the 1975-1976 school year. A comparison of the data collected from the two years will show that as the media centers become a more important and integral part of the school curriculum, their visibility will cause material in the centers to become more subject to question. There will therefore be an increase in censorship in the schools in the 1975-1976 school year. Mechanically Induced Karst Development Along The Silurian Escarpment In Northeastern Iowa, Ardith K. Hansel

This research investigates the spatial distribution of surface karst features along the Silurian Escarpment in northeastern Iowa. A 30 square mile area of Elk Townships in Cla:rton and Delaware Counties was selected for intensive investigation. All surface karst features within the study area were located in the field and plotted on a 7.5 minute topographic map. A generic model is presented to explain the process, causation, and geologic time period of active karstification. Field evidence supports the hypothesis that the karst landforms along the Silurian Escarpment in northeastern Iowa are not solutionnl in nature, but rather mechanically induced features. The …

How are Iowa junior high and middle school students using still photography in their classes? The purpose of the study was to ascertain quantitatively the extent to which still photography is used by students as (1) an assigned project, (2) an optional method of completing an assigned project, and (3) a special unit designed to have students understand how still photography relates to a content area.

This bibliography is an attempt to list some of the best books written for boys and girls on the subject of India.. Basic recommended book lists, bibliographies, and the collection at the Youth Library, University of Northern Iowa, have been consulted to compile it. This is by no means a complete list and it will need periodic revision. So that a major portion of it will remain relevant, the emphasis has been on imaginative literature. The folk tales of India are strongly stressed because they are so closely associated with this country's religions, customs and manners.

They also are concerned about the real world and seek to understand their own emotions, behaviors and life. Again, media specialists should be aware of any existing materials that deal with these concerns for possible purchase.

Floristic Composition And Structure Of Fen Communities In Northwest Iowa, A. G. Van Der Valk

Iowa fens have three distinct, concentric vegetation zones: a border zone, a sedge mat zone, and a discharge zone where ground water supplying the fens comes to the surface. Calamagrostis inexpansa Gray, Viola nephrophylla Greene, Scirpus americanus Pers. and Carex spp. are the dominants in the border zone. The composition of this zone is quite variable both within and between fens. The sedge mat is composed primarily of Rhynchospora capillacea Torr. Other species normally found in this zone are Lobelia kalmii L., Muhlenbergia racemosa (Michx.) BSP, Parnassia glauca Raf., Triglochin maritima L. and Scirpus americanus. All plant ecology papers published in the Proceedings from 1887 to 1973 were identified. On the average only 1.4 papers were published per year. An examination of the number of papers published in successive five-year intervals indicates that there were three distinct periods in the history of plant ecology in Iowa with three individuals dominating each period: 1887-1931 - L. H. Pammel, B. Shimek, and Ada Hayden; 1932-1951 - H. S. Conard, J. M. Aikman, and Ada Hayden; 1952-1971 - J. M. Aikman, R. F. Thorne, and R. Q. Landers. The State of Iowa, through a bill reorganizing the intermediate county education systems into fifteen intermediate area education agencies providing special education, media, and auxiliary services, has mandated that the media division shall provide a professional library and curriculum laboratory for the area that it serves.

Although a manual of the vascular plants of Iowa has yet to be written, many botanists have contributed to a thorough floristic survey of the state, and most of the difficult plant families have been studied taxonomically. The number of vascular plant species is estimated at over 1,800. It would probably require five or more years of concentrated effort to produce an accurate, comprehensive manual of the Iowa flora. A listing of 238 selected references on the Iowa vascular flora is presented.

Iowa bryological literature covers a century of study. Only one previous review, now 30 years old, exists. An updated bibliography is presented with 98 references. Of these, 47 had not been previously compiled. The references were annotated to facilitate access to, and understanding of, the references.

Ectoparasites Of Mammals From Winneshiek County, Iowa, Dennis George Albertson

Fourteen species of mammals (86 specimens) were collected and found to harbor 32 species of ectoparasites as follows: 3 species of Metastigmata (Ixodidae); 8 species of Mesostigmata (Laelapidae); 1 species of Astigmata (Labidophoridae); 5 species of Prostigmata (4 Myobiidae and 1 Trombiculidae); 9 species of Siphonaptera (4 Ceratophyllidae and 5 Hystrichopsyllidae); 4 species of Anoplura (Hoplopleuridae); 1 species of Mallophaga (Trichodectidae); 1 species of Coleoptera (Leptinidae); and 1 species of Diptera (Cuterebridae). Twelve species were new records for the state and all 32 were new for Winneshiek County.
