Twenty successfully field tested learning activities are designed to help junior high school students develop skills in reading social studies materials; critical thinking; geography; and history. Each self-contained activity includes background information; examples; and student exercises. Activities for improving content readings focus on key words; sexist words; social studies terms; important facts; and who; what; where; when; how; and why questions. To develop critical thinking skills; students complete exercises using flow charts; objective questions to ask for specific information; ratings; and sources of information concerning the achievements of significant persons. Based on the original United States Land Office survey, it has been estimated that 18 percent of the total state land area was once covered by forest. Today, less than 4 percent of the Iowa landscape remains in forest. In essence, Iowa's forest lands have a value underrated and misunderstood by most of its citizens. Threatened with exhaustion of our natural forest heritage, it is imperative that the citizens of this state awaken at last to the necessity of protecting what is left. The post-war infants of the late 40's and early 50's have progressed steadily through the elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools swelling each in turn to its capacity. The early 70's saw these young adults, in numbers the likes of which this country has never before seen, entering a highly competitive and highly specialized job market. Informs Users And Subject Requests, 1974-1978, Millicent M. Williams

This study assesses the use of INFORMS from 1974-1978. The number of requests, the types of users, and the variety of data bases used for searches were all recorded during this time period. Sixteen microfilmed rolls of INFORMS negotiation and ledger forms were used. The following conclusions were reached: 1) the number of requests did increase during the time periods when schools were in session; 2) teachers were the number one users of INFORMS; 3) curriculum and teaching techniques were the subject categories most requested; and 4) ERIC was the data base searched most often for all requests.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa was blessed with an abundant and diverse natural heritage. The history of problems of preservation of natural areas to depict the types and diversity of original Iowa are presented in an historical framework. The history is divided into 3 eras: an era of settlement (1832-1900), an era of academic concern (1900-1950), and a contemporary era (1950-present). The contemporary era is subdivided into 3 periods: an organizational period (l 950-1965), a period of inactivity (l965-1975), and a period of renewed activity (l 975-present).
