Media Center Book Losses Due To Student Mobility In Waterloo, Iowa, Darlene Peterson
Media Center Book Losses Due To Student Mobility In Waterloo, Iowa, Darlene Peterson
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of the study was to determine what percentage of all missing elementary media centers books were not returned by students who had moved either within or outside the Waterloo Community School District, and what retrieval methods had been most frequently and most successfully used. Survey instruments were mailed to all elementary media specialists in Waterloo in September, 1983. The first section of the survey instrument asked how many books were lost in 1982-1983, and of these how many were not checked out but were missing, were checked out but not returned by students who had moved, were checked …

The Vascular Flora Of Roggman Boreal Slopes Preserve, Clayton County, Iowa, Thomas G. Lammers
The Vascular Flora Of Roggman Boreal Slopes Preserve, Clayton County, Iowa, Thomas G. Lammers
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Charles and Anna Roggman Boreal Slopes is a 20 acre (8.1 ha) Nature Conservancy preserve situated on the floodplain and adjacent northfacing slope of a tributary of Buck Creek in Clayton County, northeastern Iowa. My study of the preserve in 1981 revealed a vascular flora of 160 species representing 59 families. Three plant communities were recognized: ash-elm on the floodplain, maple-basswood on the slope, and an unusual "boreal slope" community in areas of the slope with cold air drainage. The last contains several species with boreal American or circumboreal distributions which have probably persisted since the Pleistocene. Eleven species protected …
A Plan For Improving The Curriculum And Instruction For The Lower Secondary Schools Of Thailand, Pusaporn Phongboon
A Plan For Improving The Curriculum And Instruction For The Lower Secondary Schools Of Thailand, Pusaporn Phongboon
Graduate Research Papers
"Prior to the 20th century, education was for royalty or for monks" (The Office of Prime Minister, 1978:263). Thailand had no formal school system. Education generally was undertaken as a family task. "The first formal schools were opened only about one hundred years ago" (Bennett, 1975 :26). However, as society became more complex, special institutions were developed to promote desired educational activities. Such developments have been gradual, and in large measure in reference to national interests.

A comparison of full-day; alternate-day (FDAD) and half-day; every-day (HDED) kindergartens in Iowa assessed instructional time; congruence between goals and outcomes; and principal; teacher; and pupil attitudes. Findings were gathered from surveys of school administrators and teachers; as well as from questionnaires sent to directors of early childhood education programs at the Department of Public Instruction in 13 states and to professors of early childhood education at 92 state-supported institutions in those same 13 states. The survey of administrators and teachers was made to determine whether (1) goals were set for both FDAD and HDED programs; (2) the same curricular …

A Study Of Selected Aspects Of The Social Studies Curriculum In American Secondary Schools, James Ching-Bin Chang
A Study Of Selected Aspects Of The Social Studies Curriculum In American Secondary Schools, James Ching-Bin Chang
Graduate Research Papers
The social studies has been changing during the last twenty years. Until the 1970's, more than 100 major social studies curriculum projects were financed by the U. S. federal government, ·foundations, and institutions of higher learning. However, there was little agreement on which concepts or ways of working in the social sciences were most fruitful and representative of accepted structure.

Is School Science An Endangered Species?, Jack Gerlovich, Thomas Budnik
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
2. Is school science
A recent National Science Foundation report warns that the United States faces immediate shortages of engineers and computer professionals; it also sees a trend "toward virtual scientific and technological illiteracy in the population at large."(12)
Science News reported that the nation's commitment to excellence and international primacy in science and mathematics has waned markedly over the past 15 years. Not only the scientific community, but the nation as a whole, will suffer if drastic changes aren't made quickly. In an age when scientific and technical literacy is becoming increasingly necessary to function in our society, increasing …

Additional Iowa Bryophyte References, James H. Peck
Additional Iowa Bryophyte References, James H. Peck
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Fifty-five annotated references are added to the bibliography of literature on Iowa bryophytes. The references treat taxonomic, ecologic, physiologic, and phytogeographic reports on Iowa mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. The status of lowa bryology is compared to bryology in the other states of the Upper Midwest and Great Plains. The Iowa bryophyte flora now consists of 342 bryophytes, including 277 mosses, 63 liverworts, and 3 hornworts. A total of 153 reports to the study of Iowa bryophytes have now been located and annotated.
