Kindling The Creative Spark, Richard L. Weaver Ii Jan 1979

Kindling The Creative Spark, Richard L. Weaver Ii

Iowa Journal of Communication

When teachers discuss the grading of papers, exams, outlines, or speeches, their comments often reflect the need to quantify human behavior. One teacher said, "I simply list the characteristics I want mentioned and award one point for each one that is discussed." Another said, "I use a check sheet. At the end of a speech I count up the checks and give the grade." Academicians want criteria, competencies, characteristics, lists, and outlines of essential items. There is no denying that such quantification is helpful, but it never tells the whole story. The purpose of this article is to offer the …

Citizens-Band Radio Has A Message For Us, William C. Clark Jan 1979

Citizens-Band Radio Has A Message For Us, William C. Clark

Iowa Journal of Communication

Not since the days of Prohibition has there been such widespread, guilt-free violation of the law. Not since the hula-hoop has a manufactured device provided so much pleasure for the citizenry. Not since the development of the tailor-made cigarette has a device made social status so easy to acquire and given so many people the feeling of being members of a happy, witty, trouble-free society. The citizens-band radio (CB) does it all.

Review: The Articulate Person: A Guide To Everyday Public Speaking, Jon Hall Jan 1979

Review: The Articulate Person: A Guide To Everyday Public Speaking, Jon Hall

Iowa Journal of Communication

The Articulate Person aptly serves as both the title of the text as well as the goal for which it is designed to achieve. In a prefatory statement, the author advises the student/reader that the text is not intended to create a polished professional speaker, but an articulate person--one who wants to learn to speak in public with some measure of intelligence, appropriateness, and confidence. The author's definition then of "articulate" serves as the end toward which this introductory public speaking text strives to accomplish.

Review: A Brief Introduction To Speech, Rex Reynolds Jan 1979

Review: A Brief Introduction To Speech, Rex Reynolds

Iowa Journal of Communication

Every year yet another bundle of new textbooks for the basic speech course arrives. Most of the texts are worthy of consideration even though they likely represent but minor variations on well worn rhetorical derivatives. Few major differences persist. A truly outstanding text is rare, even among the few that dominate our actual classroom usage. Now comes on the market a text that on first glance looks very much like the others, but upon scrutiny is a marked departure, not into a novel area, but into a well known, though much neglected, canon of speech. Under the pens of Donovan …

Evaluating Student Teachers, Frances S. Langford Jan 1979

Evaluating Student Teachers, Frances S. Langford

Iowa Journal of Communication

Evaluation! Just the thought of it evokes fear and trembling. Why? Each of us evaluates almost constantly--comparing today's performance against yesterday's, measuring current students against former ones, weighing one teaching technique against another. The purpose here, however, is not to condemn nor condone evaluation but to share ideas about a specific instance of evaluation, evaluation of student teaching.

In the student teaching situation evaluation is "diagnostic." Evaluation helps identify what student teachers do well, where they need improvement, and how they can better achieve their goals. Evaluation is shared by student teachers, high school cooperating teachers and university supervisors. Together …

Review: Understanding And Sharing: An Introduction To Speech Communication, Sandra Manheimer Jan 1979

Review: Understanding And Sharing: An Introduction To Speech Communication, Sandra Manheimer

Iowa Journal of Communication

Another speech fundamentals textbook? You bet! And this one definitely merits consideration as a teacher resource or for class adoption. Most broad-based fundamentals texts (and courses) fail in one of two areas: (1) balance in the coverage of different areas of communication with a resulting over-emphasis of one area (such as public speaking) to the neglect of other areas (such as small groups or interpersonal communication) or (2) coverage of one area fails to include the key material on that subject. Pearson and Nelson demonstrate a remarkable ability to isolate the essentials of each subject and to combine them into …

"60 Minutes": Rhetorical Form And Religious Function, Steven L. Vibbert Jan 1979

"60 Minutes": Rhetorical Form And Religious Function, Steven L. Vibbert

Iowa Journal of Communication

In a recent Nielsen poll, "60 Minutes" emerged as the fourth most popular television show in America. For a news show--even for a so-called "news magazine"--such popularity is unprecedented. While the nightly news attracts its faithful few, and while competitors' "magazine" clones come and go, "60 Minutes," after ten years, continues to flourish. Ten years of success is enough to arouse the critical instincts of the rhetorical analyst. Such a long-standing corpus of "discourse" offers the rhetorical critic the opportunity to test rhetorical-critical theories on matters of concern, not only to scholars of communication, but to the general viewing public …

A Kinetic Study Of Propylene Metathesis Over Wo3-Sio2 Gel, Russell Maatman, Craig Friesema Jan 1979

A Kinetic Study Of Propylene Metathesis Over Wo3-Sio2 Gel, Russell Maatman, Craig Friesema

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent workers have reported anomalous results for the metathesis of propylene over WO3-SiO2 gel in a flow system. One anomaly, confirmed in the present work, is an increase in catalytic activity with an increase in flow rate. The reaction was studied at a propylene partial pressure of 0.37-1 atm between 435 and 493 degrees C. Two reaction mechanisms have recently been proposed; one includes a bimolecular surface step and the other is a carbene chain mechanism. The rate law for the carbene mechanism has been developed. Attempts were made to fit the catalytic activities to the rate …

The purpose of this study, therefore was to go to the Scandinavian countries to (1) investigate the industrial education programs on various educational levels, (2) ascertain the …

An Information Processing Approach To Group Performance Of Poetry: Implications For Adaptation And Audience Research, Sandra Highnam Jan 1979

An Information Processing Approach To Group Performance Of Poetry: Implications For Adaptation And Audience Research, Sandra Highnam

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This investigation explores the relationship between a neurological model of information processing and a group performance of poetry. It focuses upon three considerations: construction of a neurological model of information processing, application of this model to group performance of poetry, and implications for adaptation of poetry and audience research.

A neurological model of information processing is constructed which explains perception in terms of the specialized functions of the left and right hemispheres. According to this model, certain aspects of the environment (stimuli) are more efficiently processed by each hemisphere: the left dealing largely with verbal material and the right with …

The Effect Of A Preoperational Puppet Show On Anxiety Levels Of Hospitalized Children, Joyce Lee Bernard Jan 1979

The Effect Of A Preoperational Puppet Show On Anxiety Levels Of Hospitalized Children, Joyce Lee Bernard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated effects of a preoperative puppet show on anxiety levels of hospitalized children as measured by the Palmar Sweat Index (PSI). Subjects were 28 children, ages 2-7 years inclusive, allocated randomly to treatment and nontreatment groups. Treatment consisted of a puppet show designed to familiarize patients with hospital routines and with procedures of their operations. Two PSI measures were collected for each subject, and average difference scores of individuals among all measures were compared. Analyses of variance were used to test mean differences with data categorized by treatment, by sex, and by interaction of sex and treatment. There …

The Development And Testing Of An Energy-Related Information System For The University Of Northern Iowa Solar Options Laboratory, Joseph B. Wujek Jr.

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The increasing awareness over the past decade that there is a need to conserve energy and explore new energy technologies has resulted in the publishing by government and private concerns of an abundant variety of energy-related literature. This abundance of literature along with the current interest in energy has precipitated an immediate demand for the collection, analysis and interpretation of information and data relating to energy resources and technologies.

The development of the University of Northern Iowa Solar Options Laboratory (UNISOL) project began as a result of the impact of the present day energy situation on several faculty members of …

A Study To Place Determined Competencies In Priority Order As Perceived By Iowa Secondary Secretarial Education Teachers For The Purpose Of Contributing To Curriculum Development, Catherine Grady Downes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The problem of this study was to determine a priority order ranking of predetermined competencies for secretarial education teachers as perceived by Iowa secondary secretarial education teachers for the purpose of contributing to the development of teacher education curriculums. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire mailed to the school addresses of 282 secretarial teachers employed in Iowa secondary schools. The questionnaire consisted of 51 competencies within 7 classifications and one grouping of the 7 classifications of competencies. Teachers were asked to rank individual competencies in a priority order within a predetermined classification. Teachers were also asked to …

An Analytical Comparison And Contrast Of The Automobile Rotary Combustion Engine And The Reciprocating Engine, Eric K. Earle Jul 1978

An Analytical Comparison And Contrast Of The Automobile Rotary Combustion Engine And The Reciprocating Engine, Eric K. Earle

Graduate Research Papers

The ReCE, although possessing many good characteristics as a motive source of power, is still somewhat far from achieving the desired efficiency in man's quest for better economical and practical means of transportation, due to the lack of higher speeds and its inability to burn all of the fuel admitted as a result of its large number of moving parts, their weight, size and reciprocating motion.

The design and development of the RCE has overcome many of the above problems inherent in the ReCE, and, therefore, has the potential of replacing the ReCE as the major source of automotive power …
