The Literary Characteristics Of Books Popular With Fourth And Fifth Graders At Hudson Elementary School, Marilyn H. Lilja

Graduate Research Papers

The report of a study conducted in the fall of the 1978-79 school year by the elementary media specialist at Hudson, Iowa Elementary School to determine what literary characteristics were found in books which were currently popular with the Hudson fourth and fifth grade students. The literature reviewed discussed the criteria of literary quality developed by other authors. A set of ten criteria with which to judge literary quality was developed by the researcher. A survey was taken to determine the fifteen most popular books among these students. The books were then read by the researcher and evaluated in terms …

Society, Science, And The Scientific Enterprise, Henry Veldhuis Jan 1979

Society, Science, And The Scientific Enterprise, Henry Veldhuis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Numerous developments in science and technology have moved man to the interfaces between science and government, science and religion, science and economics, and others. The necessity of functioning along these interfaces suggests that science education should include a commitment to the development of the scientific literacy necessary to understand the relationships between science and society.

Stratigraphy Of The Dubuque Formation (Upper Ordovician) In Iowa, C. O. Levorson, A. J. Gerk, Thomas W. Broadhead

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Dubuque Formation of Upper Ordovician age crops out in the Upper Mississippi Valley. It comprises interbedded carbonate and argillaceous rocks that are approximately 35 feet thick in Iowa and Illinois, but thicken to a maximum of approximately 45 feet in southern Minnesota. Three proposed informal subdivisions: Frankville, Luana, and Littleport beds, are differentiated on the basis of bed surface topography ranging upward from nearly planar beds in the Frankville to prominently undulose surfaces in the Littleport beds. The Frankville beds represent a transition from the massive dolomite of the underlying Stewartville Member of the Wise Lake Formation to the …

Birds Of Some Iowa Wetlands In Relation To Concepts Of Faunal Preservation, Mitlon W. Weller Jan 1979

Birds Of Some Iowa Wetlands In Relation To Concepts Of Faunal Preservation, Mitlon W. Weller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Forty-one species of birds nested in the prairie-wetlands complex of Dewey's Pasture during the period 1962 to 1974. Numbers of pairs and nests were recorded annually for the ducks and other waterbirds that dominated the avifauna, but observations on terrestrial species were less detailed and only frequency of occurrence data are presented. These data on bird use of a relict pothole area demonstrate the dynamics of bird populations in relation to habitat conditions. Abundance and diversity of waterbirds were positively correlated with increasing water depth. Problems of conserving typical avifaunas in small wetlands units surrounded by intensive agriculture are discussed …

The Role Of The School Library Media Specialist As Perceived By English And Social Science Teaching Majors And Library Science Students At The University Of Northern Iowa, Edward L. Bailey Jr. Jan 1979

The Role Of The School Library Media Specialist As Perceived By English And Social Science Teaching Majors And Library Science Students At The University Of Northern Iowa, Edward L. Bailey Jr.

Graduate Research Papers

This research study was an attempt to answer the question: Do English and social science students; English and school library media specialist students; and social science and school library media specialist students possess similar perceptions of the role of the school library media specialist?

To answer this question, a role norm inventory consisting of seven parts, each representing one of seven role segments was administered. Responses were made on a Likert-type scale by sample groups at the University of Northern Iowa. An analysis of variance was used to determine the significant differences with the .05 level of probability set for …

Animal Stereotypes In Children’S Picture Books, Jeanna L. Massman Jan 1979

Animal Stereotypes In Children’S Picture Books, Jeanna L. Massman

Graduate Research Papers

This research was a content analysis concerned with the stereotyping of animals in children's literature. Five hypotheses were formulated on the topic. These hypotheses examined the relationship between type of characterization (animal as animal, animal as animal but talking, animal as human being) and stereotyping. The relationship between role of character (major or minor) and stereotyping and the degree of stereotyping and realism, in general, prevalent in children's picture books. The animals picked for analysis were bears, foxes, mice and rabbits. The total population of books was taken from five sources and a stratified random sample was drawn. A total …

The Use Of Short-Count Methods On Field Collected Diatom Communities To Determine Water Quality Of Small Streams, James A. Slock Jan 1979

The Use Of Short-Count Methods On Field Collected Diatom Communities To Determine Water Quality Of Small Streams, James A. Slock

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken to determine if short-count methods for calculation of diatom species diversity could be used to determine the water quality of small streams. Two small streams, located in North Central Iowa, were selected for study; one was chosen because it appeared to be in a relatively healthy condition and the other because it appeared to be highly polluted. Diatom samples were collected by direct field collection of the predominant diatom growths in each stream. Short-counts of 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 diatom valves were made and species diversity computed by 2 methods, the Shannon Index of …

A Comparison Study Of Media Skills Guides For The Elementary Grades, Barbara J. Steen Jan 1979

A Comparison Study Of Media Skills Guides For The Elementary Grades, Barbara J. Steen

Graduate Research Papers

Five published guides for elementary media skills instruction were selected and compared for general learning skills, instruction in topical areas unique to the media center, and capacity for integrating media skills into the elementary school curriculum. The hypotheses checked the grade levels where general learning skills and topical areas were introduced, taught, or reviewed. The extent of media skills instruction and exposure to nonprint materials and activities was also examined for primary and intermediate grades. Written statements of philosophy were examined for evidence of the integration concept.

The hypothesis concerning general learning skills was rejected because an inadequate number of …

Teaching Interpersonal Communication Through Literature, Marvin D. Jensen Jan 1979

Teaching Interpersonal Communication Through Literature, Marvin D. Jensen

Iowa Journal of Communication

An introductory collegiate course in interpersonal communication is usually experience-centered. Beyond this introductory level, theory may be explored in a variety of ways. One approach in an advanced course is the application of communication theories to case studies in human behavior. Such cases may be drawn from psychological texts and/or the personal experiences of class members. Another source can be literature--in the form of short stories, novels, plays, and screenplays. One criterion of high-quality literature is that it provides insight into reality. Faulkner believed the best writers explore the human spirit, which is "capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance." …

Speech Evaluation: An Emphasis On Process, Darlene M. Daubert Jan 1979

Speech Evaluation: An Emphasis On Process, Darlene M. Daubert

Iowa Journal of Communication

After my experiences of teaching persuasion, oral interpretation, acting, and rhetoric, I have developed a few ideas about how to "teach" (or perhaps I should say, facilitate learning) in an oral communication course. Perhaps due to my background in theatre and my own orientation to the world, I view the art of learning how to communicate as movement, action, and process. Just as movement is intrinsic to the drama, it is a vital force in a speech communication class.

Integrating Instruction In Speaking And Writing In The Basic Course, Nancy L. Harper Jan 1979

Integrating Instruction In Speaking And Writing In The Basic Course, Nancy L. Harper

Iowa Journal of Communication

As the "back to basics" movement continues to dominate both secondary and higher education, those of us who teach communication must be ready to justify our field and methods and/or to offer new, but intellectually and educationally sound, alternatives to present practice. In this paper I argue that the basic course, on the college if not on the high school level, should be a course in communication (rhetoric) rather than a course in either speaking or writing.

Accessibility Of The Media Center In Open Space And Traditional Schools: A Case Study, Norma Whipple Jan 1979

Accessibility Of The Media Center In Open Space And Traditional Schools: A Case Study, Norma Whipple

Graduate Research Papers

The media center serves a vital role in the functioning of an effective educational program in a junior high school. In order for students to maximize use of the media center they should have easy access to the area.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the student in an open space school had easier access to the media center and its resources than a student in a traditional school with a media center enclosed by walls and doors. The four areas of concern were the location of the media center, school policies, teacher classroom policies and the …

A Comparative Study Of The Performer's Empathic Process In The Arts Of Interpretation And Modern Dance, Patricia Reddinger Geist Jan 1979

A Comparative Study Of The Performer's Empathic Process In The Arts Of Interpretation And Modern Dance, Patricia Reddinger Geist

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study was designed as a comparative analysis of the performer's empathic process in the arts of interpretation and modern dance. The similarity between the performer's empathic process in both arts provided a method for exploring the utility that modern dance offers the interpreter. It was the purpose of this thesis to suggest that training in modern dance provides an experience in expressive movement which develops the interpreter's ability to empathize with the literature.

The performer's experience in modern dance and interpretation involves an empathic response to stimuli presented within the choreography or within the literature. Examination of various …

The Kashmir Conflict: A Geographical Perspective, Razia Babar Jan 1979

The Kashmir Conflict: A Geographical Perspective, Razia Babar

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The object of this study is to examine Kashmir as a case of a territorial dispute. The first chapter surveys Kashmir's physical geography. The prevailing trend of mountain ranges and river valleys is related to historic movement patterns, which in turn are indicative of social, cultural, and economic links of Kashmir with Pakistan and India, and it is noted that contacts have been greater with Pakistan. In the second chapter Kashmir's cultural patterns are described, and regional religious and linguistic groupings are noted. There has been a continuity in these patterns since the second half of the nineteenth century. In …

The Ethics Of Business And Herbert Hoover’S Internationalism, Robin L. Hamilton Jan 1979

The Ethics Of Business And Herbert Hoover’S Internationalism, Robin L. Hamilton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Is it possible that someone possessed the attributes of a humanitarian and yet acted in such a way that those same characteristics were lost? Could an administrator deal with the plight of the unfortunate members of society and fail to recognize the causational factors of that plight? It would appear illogical to reason that the correct responses to the above questions could be in the affirmative, and yet the affirmative answers seemed to be applicable to the life and career of Herbert Hoover. The time-line ran from West Branch, Iowa, in 1874, ending in that same village in 1964.

Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy And The Moral Criticism Of Rhetoric, W. Thomas Duncanson Jr. Jan 1979

Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy And The Moral Criticism Of Rhetoric, W. Thomas Duncanson Jr.

Iowa Journal of Communication

Writers in the field of rhetorical criticism have long been divided over the role of moral judgment in their work. Among the rhetorical theorists most successful in incorporating moral judgments in their writings are those who, like Richard Weaver and Kenneth Burke, begin with the idea that communication is a moral act and not merely a container for moral content. Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy is a writer in this vein. Unfortunately, his work has been slighted, and it has been ignored entirely as a system for generating widely acceptable moral criticism of rhetorical acts.

A Developmental Sequence For Introductory Speech, Richard Koch Jan 1979

A Developmental Sequence For Introductory Speech, Richard Koch

Iowa Journal of Communication

The beginning teacher of speech confronts two primary problems in taking charge of the speech classroom for the first time: 1. the incredibly frightening feeling that he or she will never be able to remember a speech once it is finished, and therefore will have nothing to say about it, and 2. the more theoretical challenge of organizing the speech assignments into a sequence which will not only make some sense but also promote the development of the students as speakers.

Critical Reading Of Mass Messages In The Communication Course, Bryan K. Crow Jan 1979

Critical Reading Of Mass Messages In The Communication Course, Bryan K. Crow

Iowa Journal of Communication

We live today in an information environment. As active communicators, we spend much of our time constructing messages and discovering meanings. But we are also continuously bombarded with messages from media whose encoding capabilities are largely out of our hands, and which therefore tend to shape us into relatively passive, uncritical receivers of much of their information. The mass media themselves almost never try to teach us how to be more actively critical of their messages, and why should they? Such education would not be in the commercial interests (thus one deodorant manufacturer may "teach" us to be more wary …

On Overcoming Resistance To Value Measurement, John Waite Bowers Jan 1979

On Overcoming Resistance To Value Measurement, John Waite Bowers

Iowa Journal of Communication

Teachers of communication, especially when their subject is persuasion, often find it analytically desirable to quantify human values. In fact, several leading persuasion theories as well as several theories relating communication to conflict require quantification of "attitudes" and "beliefs" if not of "values." In general, these theories posit that human decisions result from a process in which the person assigns values to the consequences of a particular alternative, calculates the subjective probability or expectation of realizing each of those values, multiplies each value times its subjective probability, and sums the products.

Review: Development Of Functional Communication Competencies, Mary M. C. Anderson Jan 1979

Review: Development Of Functional Communication Competencies, Mary M. C. Anderson

Iowa Journal of Communication

Communication is a key factor in any transaction for children or for adults. Because breakdowns in communication so easily occur, it becomes necessary for teachers to help students of all ages develop competence in the skill of communicating. A competent communicator not only knows the rules of language structure, but also knows how to use language as a tool in everyday situations, and can weigh the different factors of a communication situation and process that information to produce an appropriate response. If this is the desired outcome, the teacher must ask how to achieve it. Barbara Wood has provided classroom …
