A Study Of The Development Of Secondary Alternative Schools, Luann Boss Jan 1983

A Study Of The Development Of Secondary Alternative Schools, Luann Boss

Graduate Research Papers

If there is one idea that educators today might agree on, it's the idea that no one program will ever begin to fit the needs of all students. Students learn under different circumstances, in different atmospheres, and in different ways. Yet American education for many years has tried to teach every child in the same way and at the same time. Our present model of education has prevailed for many years. The format of a single school serving a local community dates back to earlier centuries in American history. It was sufficient for local community members in the early 1900's …

Speaker Inspiration As A Basis Of Criticism, Russel M. Myers Jan 1983

Speaker Inspiration As A Basis Of Criticism, Russel M. Myers

Iowa Journal of Communication

Emotionalism in public address is treated in many ways by many thinkers. Thonssen, Baird, and Braden maintain that the issue of the use of emotion in speaking is not settled to the satisfaction of the majority of the rhetorical theorists and speech teachers in our century. It is my position the emotionalism is much too strong a word to use if we are to reach any agreement on the nature and use of this mode of appeal. We often dismiss a speech as pure emotionalism and, therefore, unworthy of our attention. It is interesting to note in passing that we …

Media Center Book Losses Due To Student Mobility In Waterloo, Iowa, Darlene Peterson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the study was to determine what percentage of all missing elementary media centers books were not returned by students who had moved either within or outside the Waterloo Community School District, and what retrieval methods had been most frequently and most successfully used. Survey instruments were mailed to all elementary media specialists in Waterloo in September, 1983. The first section of the survey instrument asked how many books were lost in 1982-1983, and of these how many were not checked out but were missing, were checked out but not returned by students who had moved, were checked …

Divorce Mediation: An Alternative Approach To Marital Dissolution, Suzanne Diers Strever Jan 1983

Divorce Mediation: An Alternative Approach To Marital Dissolution, Suzanne Diers Strever

Graduate Research Papers

Divorce has become a common phenomena in American life. According to The World Almanac Book of Facts, 1983, in 1981 there were approximately 1,219,000 divorces in the United States. Historically, divorce has been viewed in terms of social deviance and as pathological behavior. This negative conceptualization of divorce was considered necessary to maintain familial stability and societal equilibrium. Until modern times, divorce was granted infrequently and was perceived as a punishment for marital misconduct, not as an escape from an unhappy or unsatisfactory marriage.

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1982-83, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1983

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1982-83, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The year 1983 marks the 108th anniversary of the founding of the Academy in 1875. The first 100 years was reviewed in a special centennial issue of the Proceedings in March, 1975 in an article by this writer. Since that time, a running history of the organization has been published as the "Annual Report." This is then the eighth annual chapter in the history of the Academy since the centennial, and it is the last report of Academy affairs to be written by this author. Whether this format and practice will continue in future years depends on the choice of …

The News Reporter As Hero, Kimberly Bate Jan 1983

The News Reporter As Hero, Kimberly Bate

Iowa Journal of Communication

The hero is, says Thomas Carlyle, a god among men. He is gifted with the best of human qualities as well as unusual originality, intellect, genius, inspiration, and insight. Heroic insight, the true measure of the hero, shows itself in what Carlyle refers to as "sincerity of vision." A hero is able to see beyond the deceitful "show of things" into the truth that lurks behind. "He has actually an eye for the world.”

In the world of today we do not consider human beings as gods. Instead we worship "men of god," and poets, and queens for their nobility, …

An Inquiry Into The Special Education Training Of Aea 7 Elementary School Administrators, Kay Spaulding Jan 1983

An Inquiry Into The Special Education Training Of Aea 7 Elementary School Administrators, Kay Spaulding

Graduate Research Papers

Since the passage of Public Law 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, principals are being required to assume increasingly greater responsibilities for the education of handicapped children within their schools. 1 As the recognized administrative and instructional leader of the school, it is the principal who is the primary school person involved in promoting adequate programs for the handicapped child. The school principal is considered to be the person who determines the attitudes and sets the tempo for the total educational program within the building. The principal is the educator who encourages flexibility, innovation, and the …

A Study Of Therapeutic Formats For The Treatment Of Spouse Abuse, Susan Hoppenworth Jan 1983

A Study Of Therapeutic Formats For The Treatment Of Spouse Abuse, Susan Hoppenworth

Graduate Research Papers

These words which are spoken in a traditional Anglican-Episcopalian betrothal/nuptial marriage-ceremony hint of tenderness and caring, promising each other a life of togetherness and harmony. For various reasons the positive emotions behind these words are frequently obscured by even stronger needs or emotions including anger, power and aggression. The union of the two persons involved then becomes a disharmonious lifestyle, void of many of the promises spoken during a marriage ceremony.

Personal Strength Building: A Program To Improve The Psychological Readiness Of Academically Deficient Students For Post-Secondary Training, M. Penny Wilkins

Graduate Research Papers

The academically deficient student entering postsecondary training faces a difficult challenge. Not only must he or she look for sources to aquire [sic] the missing academic competencies, but the individual must also deal with the psychological effects of past academic failure and cope with the present stresses of being back in school. The Developmental Education Program at the Hawkeye Institute of Technology, a vocational-technical school in Waterloo, Iowa, offers prospective students the opportunity to increase not only their academic skills, but also the chance to examine and increase their personal psychological strength. Students enrolled in the Developmental Education Program are …

Couples Living Apart: An Examination Of Their Perceived Benefits And Challenges As A Result Of Living Apart, J. January Harrison Jan 1983

Couples Living Apart: An Examination Of Their Perceived Benefits And Challenges As A Result Of Living Apart, J. January Harrison

Graduate Research Papers

Marriage has been conventionally considered a relationship between a man and a woman in which the husband is the breadwinner and the wife is the nurturer of the home. The traditional, or at least idealized, American family in all but very recent years thus consisted of a husband whose primary identification and duties were to his job and a wife who managed the home and family full-time and who, if among the middle and upper classes, did some volunteer work (Pepitone-Rockwell, 1980, p. 113). Other alternatives to the conventional marriage appear to have come about through changes in societal conditions. …

Governor's Task Force Report On High Technology In Iowa: Results And Applications To The Crisis In Science Education, David H. Swanson Jan 1983

Governor's Task Force Report On High Technology In Iowa: Results And Applications To The Crisis In Science Education, David H. Swanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Governor Robert Ray, on May 18, 1982, directed a High Technology Task Force to examine the feasibility of the development of high technology industries in Iowa. This task force after 5½ months of study, made its report to the governor. The report found that 75 percent of the new U.S. manufacturing jobs created during the past 25 years were in seven basic industry groups. These industries were generally described as high technology. The report also concluded that in the future manufacturing employment increases were most likely to occur in high technology industries. Considered major among the locational factors of high …

A Refined Plan For Elimination Of Unwanted/Dangerous Chemicals, Jack Gerlovich, Ron Kolpa, Frank Kilpatrick

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Through the cooperative efforts of numerous state agencies, the state of Iowa has refined its plan for safe, expeditious and effective identification and redistribution and/or disposal of hazardous chemicals from school science storerooms. Following assessment of high school and community college storerooms, review of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines for handling and disposal of hazardous substances, review of related chemical literature, and testing at the University of Iowa, a list of 100 "chemicals considered more hazardous than their education value" was synthesized.

The Utilization Of Adult Volunteers In Elementary School Library Media Centers, Judith Ann Snetselaar Jan 1983

The Utilization Of Adult Volunteers In Elementary School Library Media Centers, Judith Ann Snetselaar

Graduate Research Papers

This study was conducted to determine the extent to which Iowa school systems, employing media specialists, were utilizing adult volunteers in elementary media centers and to determine the tasks the adult volunteers were being assigned. A survey instrument, consisting of equal parts of both professional and nonprofessional tasks randomly selected from the Task Analysis Survey Instrument, was sent to one hundred twenty-one Iowa elementary school media centers. These elementary school media centers indicated the presence of a media specialist on the Basic Education Data Survey 1982-1983. One hundred and eight survey instruments were returned, and this represented a return rate …

The Roles And Characteristics Of Department Heads In Iowa Secondary Schools, Darrell Dean Druvenga Jan 1983

The Roles And Characteristics Of Department Heads In Iowa Secondary Schools, Darrell Dean Druvenga

Graduate Research Papers

One of the most frequent themes which finds its way into the professional literature of school administrators emphasizes the importance of the building principal to the educational institution. There seems to be general agreement that with the presence of strong administrative leadership by the principal, a school is likely to be effective; without capable leadership, it is not. In 1974 this idea was emphasized by the Select Committee on Equal Educational Opportunity of the United States Senate when it concluded: In many ways the school principal is the most important and influential individual in any school. He or she is …

The Effects Of The Family On A Woman's Decision To Pursue A Nontraditional Career, Kristine Fae Oswald Jan 1983

The Effects Of The Family On A Woman's Decision To Pursue A Nontraditional Career, Kristine Fae Oswald

Graduate Research Papers

Labor statistics have indicated a growing trend in occupations selected by women. Increasingly, women are choosing nontraditional occupations. Numerous explanations have been offered for this phenomena. The role the family plays in the woman's eventual career choice was frequently offered as one set of explanatory variables. The phrase "nontraditional career choice" may be defined as the selection of an occupation by the individual of either sex which is viewed as inappropriate for the individual based upon societal customs. Classic examples of nontraditional career choice are the "male-secretary" and the "female-doctor". The very use of a hyphenated sex-ascription draws attention to …

Some Factors Influencing Phreatic Cave Development In The Silurian Strata Of Iowa, Michael J. Bounk Jan 1983

Some Factors Influencing Phreatic Cave Development In The Silurian Strata Of Iowa, Michael J. Bounk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Silurian strata of eastern Iowa are characterized by solutional karst, expressed in part as caves. Most of the caves were developed within the phreacic zone although they generally are now hydrologically inactive. The formation of this karst was controlled by numerous factors. These include stratigraphically controlled variations in prekarst porosity, hydraulic conductivity, and clay content which affects solubility. These key factors are seen in both the Cyclocrinites Beds of the Hopkinton Dolomite and a portion of the Gower Fm., both of which contain a disproportionate number of caves. In many shallow phreatic caves within the Silurian rocks passage morphology …

An Investigation Of The Phenomenon Of School Phobia, Juliet Ocenar Ruiz Jan 1983

An Investigation Of The Phenomenon Of School Phobia, Juliet Ocenar Ruiz

Graduate Research Papers

School phobia is a perennial problem but very little has been written about it in recent years. The problem of school phobia seemed to have gained more attention in the 1950's and 1960's, with greatest concern for the adolescents' affliction in the 1970's. The purpose of this paper is to revive the reader's consciousness to this problem and to encourage understanding and empathy for children exhibiting a pathological fear of attending school.

Model For Kindergarten Orientation, Lillian Mae Frantz Jan 1983

Model For Kindergarten Orientation, Lillian Mae Frantz

Graduate Research Papers

There is a variation in the way children adjust to school as they enter with different levels of maturation. A basic factor in understanding the nature of children is the recognition that every child.is unique. Children are born with genetic variations that predispose them to be different in appearance, temperament, growth patterns and learning style. All of these factors are interrelated and interdependent and function as a unit to produce unique personalities. In terms of promoting competence, individuality dictates a tolerance and understanding of learning differences, a variety of approaches to teaching and learning in the classroom or at home, …
