Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith Jan 1983

Seven Variables Influencing Life Satisfaction Of The Aged, Pamela A. Galbraith

Graduate Research Papers

This paper deals with the topic of life satisfaction of the aged, a rapidly growing segment of the population of the United States. The aged are persons found in many groups which constitute our society--racial, economic, education, geographic, political, and sexual. Persons who are considered aged are those who are sixty-five years of age or older. The age of sixty-five can be considered an arbitrary point, since a person does not suddenly become aged. Some persons of sixty-five years are retired, others are not; some may be healthy and active, while others are sickly and inactive; some may be involved, …

Standardized Achievement Tests And Their Implications For Guidance Counselors, John William Hansen Jan 1983

Standardized Achievement Tests And Their Implications For Guidance Counselors, John William Hansen

Graduate Research Papers

In the last twenty years the general public has challenged the judgment of professional educators regarding the quality of education provided in public schools (Feldt and Forsyth, 1973). At present, the public is demonstrating an interest in knowing how well students are mastering important academic content and skills. Reassurances that educational expenditures are worthwhile are no longer being accepted in the absence of factual evidence. As a result, there has been increased attention given to the problem of the evaluation of student performance in educational programs.

A Post-Secondary Curriculum Guide For Teaching Word Processing With Microcomputers, Charles Bruce Houlton Jan 1983

A Post-Secondary Curriculum Guide For Teaching Word Processing With Microcomputers, Charles Bruce Houlton

Graduate Research Papers

In an attempt to deal with the paperwork explosion occurring in business offices, administrative management has developed the concept of word processing as a means of increasing office efficiency. In business education departments of educational institutions "word processing" has become a confusing term. Too often it is use solely as a synonym for certain types of electronic equipment. According to Frank (10:22) it is the responsibility of educators to instill into the students the idea of a process and a procedure. Word processing is the application of it to the office. Modern technology has been applied to every other facet …

Volunteerism In The Elementary Schools, Katherine Hill Meaney Jan 1983

Volunteerism In The Elementary Schools, Katherine Hill Meaney

Graduate Research Papers

Schools have turned to the oldest tradition of America by looking at the use of volunteers in our schools. Some anthropologists have suggested that voluntary associations have become more common and significant as society has advanced, but we can trace volunteerism back to 8000 B.C. Soaring cost of education at all levels both state and local is climbing. The cost of educating our young is rising daily. There is a rise in salaries for teachers; believed to be rightfully claimed. There is also increasing pressure to upgrade the duties of certified teachers. Demands are greater on the teacher. Demands are …

Inventory: Willingness Of Adolescents To Discuss Personal Concerns With Adults And With Peers, Phyllis Ver Ploeg Jan 1983

Inventory: Willingness Of Adolescents To Discuss Personal Concerns With Adults And With Peers, Phyllis Ver Ploeg

Graduate Research Papers

Personal problems continue to be of overwhelming concern to high school students (Olson, 1979). Every year more students below age 18 run away from home. Millions of students abuse alcohol and other drugs. The Department of Health reports one teen in 20 has a drinking problem. Suicide is the second leading cause of death of people ages 15 to 24. Olson (1979) further states that unwanted pregnancies among teenagers have increased, and that about 25 percent of all babies born today are born to teenagers. Child abuse has become a major social problem.

Human Evolution, Robert D. Seager Jan 1983

Human Evolution, Robert D. Seager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A common characteristic of humans is a desire to know their roots. This is evident not only in the tracing of family ancestries, but in the excitement about and attention given to the study of the roots of our entire species - the study of human evolution. We have, over the past few million years, evolved from an ape-like ancestor to modern Homo sapiens. Like evolution in general, the fact of human evolution is as firmly established as anything in science. There are, however, differences among scientists concerning details of this process. In this paper I will give an historical …

Computer Assisted Instruction In The Elementary School, John William Stevens Jan 1983

Computer Assisted Instruction In The Elementary School, John William Stevens

Graduate Research Papers

Computers as we know them today had their infancy in the late 1940's. Since that time computer technology and its concomitant applications in everyday life have expanded at nearly geometric proportions. Today the technology is advanced to about the same state that black and white television had reached in the late 1950's. Concurrent to the early development of the computer were two major trends in education: an awareness among educators for the need of individualized instruction and renewed interest in programmed learning. Thus a natural confluence of a budding technology and educational objectives occurred, resulting in computer assisted instruction. Introduction …

Some Attitudes Of Minority College Students With Some Attitudes Of Selected Educational Opportunity Staff Toward Instruction And Student Personnel Services, Michael Gordon Thomas Jan 1983

Some Attitudes Of Minority College Students With Some Attitudes Of Selected Educational Opportunity Staff Toward Instruction And Student Personnel Services, Michael Gordon Thomas

Graduate Research Papers

Student affairs professionals, in collaboration with teachers and students, can effectively improve the quality of college life; in fact, it is their responsibility to do so. Unfortunately, however, the profession has tended to react instead of take positive action. If student affairs workers are to influence what is to come, they must anticipate change, not merely adjust to it. An essential element in attitude toward professional development is that educators feel professional; that they are regarded as such, and have a direct and guiding influence on programs and activities which have an impact upon them (Holly & Blackman, 1981).

The Newly Unemployed And The Role Of The Comprehensive Employment And Training Program Manpower Specialist I (Msi), Kathleen Cohea Harper Jan 1983

The Newly Unemployed And The Role Of The Comprehensive Employment And Training Program Manpower Specialist I (Msi), Kathleen Cohea Harper

Graduate Research Papers

Unemployment has become an increasing national and local concern. Many people are having to face the prospect of never returning to their old jobs. What employment means and the extent and effects of unemployment were researched in the literature. This research focused on the "newly unemployed"--e.g. white, older (45 years or more of age), married males who have never before experienced the problems and frustrations of long-term unemployment. This specific group was chosen for research because they are a departure from those traditionally seen in the Black Hawk County Comprehensive Employment and Training Program (CETP). The problems relating to their …

Trends In Major Field Of Study For Women In Higher Education: A Comparison Of Iowa And National Data From 1972 To 1981, Rena Gayle Daly Jan 1983

Trends In Major Field Of Study For Women In Higher Education: A Comparison Of Iowa And National Data From 1972 To 1981, Rena Gayle Daly

Graduate Research Papers

In the last decade, significant changes have occurred in the makeup of the college student population. Prior to the 19701s middle to upper class white males predominated and the student population tended to be academically homogeneous because colleges determined and limited their enrollments on the basis of academic records and test scores. During the 19701s there was an influx of student admissions from all races and socioeconomic groupings. College student populations changed along sexual parameters, too, with women constituting an increasingly larger percentage of the enrollment in higher education. Indeed, women account for most of the enrollment growth in recent …

The Future Role Of The Vocational Counselor, David M. Goswick Jan 1983

The Future Role Of The Vocational Counselor, David M. Goswick

Graduate Research Papers

Future society may demand flexibility in many aspects of a person's life. One certainty is that there will be change throughout life, and proliferation of choices will likely characterize many aspects of a person's life space. Walz, {1975) emphasizes that an individual will continually be required to make critical life decisions under short time limits with little information.

Applying Technology To Alleviate The Problems Created By The Shortage Of Qualified Math And Science Teachers, Jack A. Gerlovich Jan 1983

Applying Technology To Alleviate The Problems Created By The Shortage Of Qualified Math And Science Teachers, Jack A. Gerlovich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In November, 1982, a report (Gerlovich et al., Note 1) was delivered to then Governor Robert D. Ray outlining the problems in science education in Iowa and recommendations for addressing them. Among the major needs outlined were:

1. Salaries of teachers in short supply must be made competitive with those in the private sector.

2. Preservice scholarship and loan forgiveness programs must be initiated for science teaching.

3. Cost effective, continuous, inservice programs for upgrading current science teachers should be initiated.

4. Prospective science teachers should complete coursework for the DPI "all sciences" approval to improve their employability.

5. Local …

A Model Of Transcendence For Counselors And Clients In The Process Of Counseling, Neal R. Mcmann Jan 1983

A Model Of Transcendence For Counselors And Clients In The Process Of Counseling, Neal R. Mcmann

Graduate Research Papers

Developing a model of transcendence for clients in counseling involves a number of necessary organizational steps. Without a solid foundation in counseling theory, there can be no basis upon which to build. Establishing a theoretical background in counseling provides a structure for the process. This structure aids in the development of a model of transcendence which utilizes counseling theory to help clients deal more effectively with their problems.

A Rationale For The Implementation Of A Student Employment Grievance System, Judith Decker Jan 1983

A Rationale For The Implementation Of A Student Employment Grievance System, Judith Decker

Graduate Research Papers

The reason for the study of the student employment grievance system was to develop a supported rationale for implementing a student employment grivance [sic] system. Factors needing to be considered were the passage of pertinent student rights legislation, the paralleled development of organized labor-management relations, and the increased job dissatisfaction experienced by student employees. The study will include becoming familiar with the uniqueness of student employees as a population, identifying the more common causes of grievances, becoming more knowledgeable of the necessary counseling skills to effectively facilitate a grievance system, examining the evolution of the existing University of Northern Iowa's …

Issues In Remarriage: Integration And Treatment Of Steprelationships, Sandra Uthoff Murphy Jan 1983

Issues In Remarriage: Integration And Treatment Of Steprelationships, Sandra Uthoff Murphy

Graduate Research Papers

Traditionally the Nuclear family has provided the primary socializing, learning, and nurturing functions to individuals. With an increase of casual mating and divorce habits, increases in fatal accidents, suicides, parental abandonment, and women opting to stay single while bearing children, another form of family is gaining prevalence--the Stepfamily (Rosenbaum & Rosenbaum, 1977). In 1979 there were 1,181,000 divorces in the U.S. (Bureau of Census, 1981). Visher and Visher (1982) report that 80% of the men and 75% of the women who divorce remarry. Each year in the United States one-half million adults become stepparents of one or more children (Visher …

The Crisis In Science Education: Problems And Recommendations: A Summary Of The Iowa Academy Of Science Symposium At Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, April 22, 1983, Jack A. Gerlovich, Trevor Howe, George Burnet, David H. Swanson, John E. Penick Jan 1983

Penick

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

There is a recognized state and national crisis in securing and maintaining "qualified" science teachers. To date the majority of effort has been expended toward identifying and redefining the problems with few attempts made to resolve them. The purpose of this symposium was to spend minimal time seeking to inform participants of the problems and then to present some recommendations for resolving them. Each of the presenters was uniquely to address this, to date, intractable problem.

The Nature And Extent Of Sexuality Counseling For Spinal Cord Injured Persons Within The Regional Rehabilitation Centers, Anne Elizabeth Gallagher Jan 1983

The Nature And Extent Of Sexuality Counseling For Spinal Cord Injured Persons Within The Regional Rehabilitation Centers, Anne Elizabeth Gallagher

Graduate Research Papers

There are sixteen regional Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Centers serving the United States. The centers were designated by the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, formerly the National Paraplegia Foundation, founded by the paralyzed veterans of America in 1948. The purpose of rehabilitation of this group of patients is "to provide spinal cord injured individuals with the opportunity to resume 1 a lifestyle as similar to their preinjury state as is possible" (Lawson, 1978, p. 573). Rehabilitation centers utilize the efforts of many professionals working as a team to help their patients maximize their potential for independence.

Incidence Of Burnout In The Student Personnel Services Of A University, Susan C. Spencer Jan 1983

Incidence Of Burnout In The Student Personnel Services Of A University, Susan C. Spencer

Graduate Research Papers

The topic of burnout has created its own little brushfire in professional publications. Since 1974, when the term "burnout" began to appear, it has stirred the interest of an increasing number of authors each year according to Savicki and Cooney (1982). Unfortunately, actual research on the topic has not been plentiful. Perlman and Hartman (1982) and Maslach (1978b) observed that burnout has been primarily a descriptive term and knowledge of the causes, preventions, and cures is still in the embryonic stage.

Healthy Child Development Through Early Childhood Parent Education, Victoria Sue Kleidon Oestmann

Graduate Research Papers

This study proposes to examine parent education literature concerning the provision of parent education and support to parents during the first three years of parenthood in order to make recommendations to parent educators, counselors, and others interested in enhancing healthy child development. In Chapter 1, the significance of the study to professionals will be discussed. The limitations of this study will be stated, the assumptions for the provision of early childhood parent education will be detailed, and definitions of terms will be provided.

In Search Of Intimacy, Mark A. Dix Jan 1983

In Search Of Intimacy, Mark A. Dix

Graduate Research Papers

The traditional means to attain intimacy through dictated marriage were historically fulfilled by society and parents who betrothed their children. Societal and parental dictated norms usurped the individual's freedom and required living up to externally mandated expectations of behavior. Today's system of intimacy departs dramatically from the traditional model. Today's model is formed by the individual who freely meets his/her own needs regardless of age or historically based, societal or cultural standards of expected conduct. Today's mode of living gives an individual the freedom to pursue, court and marry based solely upon his/her own needs, expectations and love.

Maurice F. Birdsall, Bette Brunstling Jan 1983

Maurice F. Birdsall, Bette Brunstling

Iowa Journal of Communication

Maurice F. Birdsall represents over forty-five years of service to speech and theatre in Iowa and "his show" goes on. He made his entrance in 1936 at Ocheyedan High School where he taught for two years. The second scene was at Pella High (1938-42) until the military service claimed him, but even that could not stop him from directing. He spent a furlough directing the "Four Freedoms Pageant" for Pella's 1943 Tulip Time.

Effectiveness Of Reality Therapy And Assertive Discipline In Controlling Discipline Disturbances, Steven R. Callison Jan 1983

Effectiveness Of Reality Therapy And Assertive Discipline In Controlling Discipline Disturbances, Steven R. Callison

Graduate Research Papers

Today's general public is scrutinizing its governmental bodies and asking why they are being run in the fashion they are. Attacks against the system seem to come from every direction. Part of the criticism may be generalized hostility towards the government body closest to home, the public school. New school systems incorporating back to basics, humanism, Bible-based curriculums, and home teaching address some of the problems the public perceive.

Identification Of College Student Dropout Characteristics And Retention Strategies, Debra J. Albrecht Jan 1983

Identification Of College Student Dropout Characteristics And Retention Strategies, Debra J. Albrecht

Graduate Research Papers

During the 1960s and 1970s there were two primary reasons why an institution had limited concern with the retention of its students: (1) there were more students than its faculty or facilities could handle. If a number of students did not continue to enroll, it was not a problem since many other students were waiting to take their place. (2) This time period involved a philosophical interpretation of equal education opportunity and the maintenance of academic standards. Many felt they fulfilled obligations for equal educational opportunity if students had easy access to institutions. There was also an assumption that academic …

Barriers Of Cross-Cultural Counseling, Charles L. Davenport Jr. Jan 1983

Barriers Of Cross-Cultural Counseling, Charles L. Davenport Jr.

Graduate Research Papers

In the past two decades, attention has been focused on the topic of cross-cultural counseling. Cross-cultural counseling is defined by Sue (1981), as a counseling relationship in which the participants are different in terms of values, norms, roles, lifestyles, verbal, and nonverbal methods of communicating. Literature in the area of cross-cultural counseling has been a recent occurance in the counseling profession, with professional articles beginning to appear in the journals around the mid 196O 1 s. Before the mid 196O's the counseling profession showed little interest or concern toward the racial, ethnic or minority groups. However, as the journals point …
