A Study For School Media Center Program Improvement, Glen W. Jordan
A Study For School Media Center Program Improvement, Glen W. Jordan
Graduate Research Papers
The school library-media specialist holds an interesting position. They are not usually classroom teachers, but they are involved in the educational process. They select, purchase, catalog, and provide access to a great many materials in book form as well as in audiovisual and computer format. It is this material and its usage that puts the library-media specialist in such a unique and interesting position within the context of a school's educational program. 1 Although the media specialist is the person who generally does the selecting of learning materials for a school's media center, and knows as well as anyone what …
Testing A Direct Mail Offer In Magazine Subscription Promotion, Mary L. Peet
Testing A Direct Mail Offer In Magazine Subscription Promotion, Mary L. Peet
Graduate Research Papers
Direct marketing is an $82 million per year business. Its history dates back over a century with roots in direct mail. Direct marketing today involves not only mail, but a variety of media, including newspapers and magazines, radio, television and telephone. The cornerstone of direct marketing is its measurability and accountability, as well as a reliance on lists and a database (Baier, 1983). In other words, direct marketing allows marketers to improve their skills by measuring what they do against previous tests. The availability of lists and data about lists provides populations from which samples can be drawn to conduct …
Perception Of English/Spanish Vot By Monolingual English Speakers: A Dichotic Study, Cynthia Flesher Barrios
Perception Of English/Spanish Vot By Monolingual English Speakers: A Dichotic Study, Cynthia Flesher Barrios
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Dichotic listening tasks have been used extensively to establish the left cerebral hemisphere as dominant for linguistic processing. Dichotic stress has also been used to investigate lateralization patterns for individuals who speak more than one language and if those patterns differ from those found in monolingual speakers. Most investigations of this nature, with both monolingual and bilingual subjects, have found a right ear advantage (REA) for linguistic processing. Voice onset time (VOT) is the acoustic parameter primarily responsible for the categorical discrimination of stop consonants in a number of different languages, including English and Spansih [sic]. It has been found …
Parental Perceptions Of The Availability And Usefulness Of Nine School Psychological Roles, Lisa Ellen Ball
Parental Perceptions Of The Availability And Usefulness Of Nine School Psychological Roles, Lisa Ellen Ball
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The present study surveyed parental perceptions of the role of the school psychologist. In particular, it sought to determine which roles were perceived as available, which roles were perceived as useful, and which populations of children parents perceived school psychologists as being most effective in helping. Ninety-five parents of elementary school age children from an Iowa community of 30,000 responded to a questionnaire developed for the study. Results were processed by the university computer. An item profile analysis which generated a frequency count and percentages for all items was conducted. Results indicated that parents tended to view school psychologists as …
The Effect Of Juror Rule Structures On Juror Verdicts, Peter Charles Facciola
The Effect Of Juror Rule Structures On Juror Verdicts, Peter Charles Facciola
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Juror rule structures were hypothesized to influence juror verdict characteristics in four ways: (a) Juror rule structures significantly affect juror verdicts; (b) Jurors who use evaluative rule structures perceive themselves to be more influential during the deliberations than jurors who use adaptive rules; (c) Jurors who use evaluative rule structures are more confident that they have reached the best possible verdict than jurors who use adaptive rules; (d) The ballots of jurors who use evaluative rules will be less salient than the ballots of jurors who use adaptive rules. Naturalistic self-report techniques were used to test the hypotheses. Sixty jurors …
Conducting Recital, John Alston
Conducting Recital, John Alston
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The development of sacred German baroque music is definitively illustrated in the works of its two greatest masters, Heinrich Schutz (1585-1672) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Schutz initiated the baroque movement in Germany when he infused the old polyphonic German style with elements of the Italian stile moderno and Venetian cori spezzati. The union of these styles subsequently became the predominant feature of German baroque music that reached its zenith in the works of J.S. Bach. The compositions on this recital, Schutz's Die sieben Worte Jesu Christi am Kreuz and Bach's Herr Gott, dich loben wir, represent two important musical …

Different Approaches To Group Decisions Involving Conflict As Determined By Leader Personality And Leadership Style, Kristyn Cassidy
Different Approaches To Group Decisions Involving Conflict As Determined By Leader Personality And Leadership Style, Kristyn Cassidy
Iowa Journal of Communication
Within every group or organization, there comes a time when discussion and comparing alternatives ends and the focus shifts to the process of making decisions and dealing with conflict. Decision making and conflict management are integral parts of the group process - without these two factors, groups would have nothing to strive for or measure themselves against. They would stop growing and changing, instead resting on past accomplishments and using old, tired ideas to solve the problems they find themselves faced with. Many groups, however, fail to realize that inter-group conflicts and innovative decision making are vital to their continued …

The Effects Of A Study Strategies Course On College Students' Academic Performance, Melanie L. Mccalley
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study was undertaken to determine whether the completion of a study strategies course had an effect on college students' grade point averages and attrition rate. The 50 experimental subjects were freshmen students at the University of Northern Iowa enrolled (during the fall semester of 1985) in "Effective Study Strategies", a non-credit six-week course offered by the Office of Learning and Instruction. A comparison group of 50 freshmen students, also from fall semester, 1985, and who did not take the study strategies course, were matched to each of the 50 experimental students on the basis of gender, ACT composite scores, …

Status, Self, And Peers: An Ethnography Of Junior High School, Susan Martha Nesheim Allbee
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This report begins with a brief discussion of the overall purpose of social science: to be of service to humankind. To examine and report one's findings is no longer the whole of the responsibility of social scientific research. One must also examine the purpose and objectives of that research. In view of those statements, the objective of this project--the gathering and analysis of information on the culture of junior high school students-- is to gain a better understanding of early adolescence and thereby offer opportunities for insights not only into their culture but to add to the body of knowledge …

Louis H. Pammel: Pioneer Botanist - A Biography, Marjorie Conley Pohl
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Many forces determine the personality and life trends of each individual. Ancestry and the circumstances of the historic time of birth and birthplace seem to mold each individual. No man is born free. So it was with Louis Hermann Pammel, pioneer American botanist, whose ancestors were Prussians.

Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette
Audience Preference For Metaphoric Concept In Broadcast Language, Denis Martin Bramblette
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A recent communication theory premise that individuals tend to arrange their thinking metaphorically is the focus of this study. Some communication scholars posit that humans actually think in metaphors. That is, individuals understand something by using one thing to stand for another. Humans communicate by comparing things they understand. Thus, we as humans actually arrange our thinking metaphorically and we understand things or interpret symbols by processing information through a system of metaphoric concepts.
This study attempts to extend metaphoric concept communication theory by examining the broadcast news segment of mass media. This study's general hypothesis is that if individuals …
A Comparison Of The Actual And Ideal Perceptions Of The School Psychologist’S Role, David Arthur Curry
A Comparison Of The Actual And Ideal Perceptions Of The School Psychologist’S Role, David Arthur Curry
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The professional role of the school psychologist has been studied for over thirty years. The school psychologist has traditionally spent the greatest percentage of professional time engaged in testing and assessment functions. Concerns have arisen as to the effectiveness of this traditional role. School psychologists, as well as other related professionals, have indicated a desire for a greater emphasis on the Consultation function within the ideal role of the school psychologist and a decrease in emphasis on the assessment functions. Difficulty in defining the role and function of the school psychologist was noted due to the inconsistent use of terminology. …
The Effects Of Artistic Three Dimensionality On Preschoolers’ Perception Of Line Drawings, Barbara Lynn Froyen
The Effects Of Artistic Three Dimensionality On Preschoolers’ Perception Of Line Drawings, Barbara Lynn Froyen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of the study was to compare different forms of stimuli for eliciting children's knowledge of their language. The study compared black-and-white drawings employing cues to depth, movement, and form. Pictures from various commercially available receptive and expressive language tests were selected. Three-dimensional representations of the same linguistic concepts were developed by the investigator. Selected test stimuli and their three-dimensional counterparts were administered to 30 preschool-age children. Responses to both stimuli were judged as correct or incorrect by the scoring conventions of the test from which the items were selected. Study results indicated that within each dimension tested, pictures …

Response Latency In Fluent And Disfluent Preschoolers, Sue Ann Kenlee Hook
Response Latency In Fluent And Disfluent Preschoolers, Sue Ann Kenlee Hook
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibility that disfluent preschoolers manifest a more impulsive cognitive tempo as compared to a language-matched control group of subjects. Nine disfluent and nine control subjects responded to two tasks designed to measure response latency from which a measure of impulsiveness could be determined. One was a classic match-to-sample figures task and the other involved verbal descriptions of ·irregularities represented in a set of pictures. Response latencies (in ms) and the number of errors made were tallied for the first task and response latencies were measured in 1/100 second for the second …
The Modern Hero: Three Plays For Young People, George D. Cowan
The Modern Hero: Three Plays For Young People, George D. Cowan
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Heroes existed in the past, but heroes today are obsolescent, if not obsolete. The problem for us today, then, is to find or create heroes. I contend that we can still identify heroes in our lives. They can be found in our families, in our friends, and in ourselves, if we only look for them. This thesis examines and defines heroes. It shows why heroes disappeared. It shows the need for and illustrates three views of the hero through three plays for young people, and it suggests how modern-day heroes are possible. Heroes are defined by actions. Heroes are also …

Library automation requires an extraordinary investment of time and money in the development and maintenance of databases. Irrespective of whether a library sets up a stand-alone system such as circulation, a group of more or less related subsystems, or a totally integrated system, it can be certain of one thing: over time needs will change, new applications will have to be developed, and modifications will have to be made to the file structure of the databases. Of principal concern to the designers of a library's databases should be finding a design structure that will allow modifications to be made with …
