Orthomolecular Therapy For The Treatment Of Mental Illness With Vitamins, Randall Lee Harding Jan 1985

Orthomolecular Therapy For The Treatment Of Mental Illness With Vitamins, Randall Lee Harding

Graduate Research Papers

The mentally ill patient has long been a major medical problem. Large numbers of our population need and receive help every year for mental illness. If a person has a physiological abnormality, such as a biochemical aberration, whether it effects his perception or his emotional control, he may not be able to respond to even highly trained professionals when it is viewed as a psychological disorder. If the correctable physiological abnormalities are found in even a small percentage of cases, treatment of these abnormalities could mean improvement for large numbers of children and adults with diagnosis of autism, paranoia, schizophrenia, …

A Review Of Selected External Degree Programs In The United States, Marcia A. Kisner Jan 1985

A Review Of Selected External Degree Programs In The United States, Marcia A. Kisner

Graduate Research Papers

The dramatic growth of higher education in the United States since the end of World War II, and, particularly, the rapid rise in the number of community colleges in the 1960's, give evidence of the desire of Americans for greater opportunities to go beyond earlier schooling to meet their learning needs and interests (Houle, 1974). External degree programs are providing students with programs that allow them to receive an education, meet goals of personal satisfaction, promotional success, and career expectations (Kiplinger Washington Editors, 1983).

Counselor Intentionality As A Variable In The Psychotherapeutic Process, Penelope M. Fox Jan 1985

Counselor Intentionality As A Variable In The Psychotherapeutic Process, Penelope M. Fox

Graduate Research Papers

A substantial body of research indicates that counselor behavior in the counseling/psychotherapeutic process is of great importance. Rogers (1957) suggested that counselor behavior must serve as a channel for fullfilling the necessary conditions of empathy, warmth and genuiness for client growth. Sloane et al. (1975) reported the potent 3 effect on outcome of therapist variables. Goodman & Dooley {1976) devised a response taxonomy to categorize counselor behaviors. Ivey & Authier (1978) proposed microcounseling training to teach specific counselor behaviors.

The Causes Of Adolescent Suicide, Elaine Ann Pfalzgraf Jan 1985

The Causes Of Adolescent Suicide, Elaine Ann Pfalzgraf

Graduate Research Papers

In one year in the U.S., 500,000 young people between the ages of 10 and 24 will attempt suicide and more than 5,000 will succeed, Jensen (1984). In his article "Adolescent Suicide: A Tragedy of Our Times" (1984), Jensen notes that suicide is the second leading cause of death in young people in this nation between the ages of 10 and 24. He writes that the rate of adolescent suicides began increasing in the mid-1950's and has tripled since 1960. In addition to these statistics, 85% of all adolescents in the U.S. think about suicide at some time and 50% …

The Criminal Side In The Curriculum: A Bibliography Of Crime Fiction For Use In Secondary World History And United States History Courses, Matthew A. Kollasch Jan 1985

The Criminal Side In The Curriculum: A Bibliography Of Crime Fiction For Use In Secondary World History And United States History Courses, Matthew A. Kollasch

Graduate Research Papers

History can be one of the most exciting courses that high school students study. Yet often it is rendered lifeless by the sole use of the textbook. It is assumed that if the students are allowed to read history related crime fiction in conjunction with their history courses they will find the subject to be more interesting because the human drama of history is better personified in fiction than in the textbook. In addition to the concern for the students' interest in history it is assumed that when given the opportunity teachers will work with media specialists on instructional development …

A Content Analysis Of Reviews For Desirable Characteristics Of High Interest-Low Vocabulary Books, Cheryl A. Nielsen Jan 1985

A Content Analysis Of Reviews For Desirable Characteristics Of High Interest-Low Vocabulary Books, Cheryl A. Nielsen

Graduate Research Papers

Because media specialists cannot possibly read all of the high interest-low reading level (high-low) titles considered for purchase, the use of book reviews to guide choices is practical. Media specialists need book reviews which give specific information about the strengths and weaknesses of books being considered for purchase. Thus the problem statements emerged for this research paper. What information was given in reviews of high-low books that revealed their strengths and weaknesses? Did reviews identify the characteristics of a high-low book which were desirable for reluctant or disabled readers? Do reviews found in two reputable review sources, Booklist and SLJ/School …

A Survey Of Maps, Globes, And Atlases In Elementary School Media Centers In Four Area Education Agencies In Iowa, Leon D. Carson

Graduate Research Papers

This research study was conducted to learn what media specialists in four Area Education Agencies in Iowa have on hand for geography materials; specifically, maps, globes, and atlases. Additionally, the study explored the adequacy of the geography resource (map, globe , or atlas) in support of the social studies curriculum, and the frequency of r e quests by faculty and student for maps , globes, and atlases. A questionnaire was sent to forty -one certified library media specialists in four Area Education Agencies (1, 6, 13, 16) in Iowa. Responding media specialists numbered thirty.

Black And White Students' Test Scores: Factors Leading To Decreasing Discrepancies, Diana Anita Fortenberry Jan 1985

Black And White Students' Test Scores: Factors Leading To Decreasing Discrepancies, Diana Anita Fortenberry

Graduate Research Papers

What exists when there are two lines approaching one another, but fail to join in order to form one line? -- a gap. There has been a mysterious proliferation of gaps in recent years. For instance, there's the generation gap. That's where a wide area of misunderstanding exists between the young and the old. Then there is the communication gap. That is not being able to effectively relate to another. But what of the testing gap? More specifically the chasm that exists between test scores of black and white students. Throughout the years it can be said that this gap …

Teaching Disabilities, Suzanne Kelly Jan 1985

Teaching Disabilities, Suzanne Kelly

Educational pendulums are forever "swinging." During the past several years and to the present, the "swinging" seems to have been and currently is in the direction of student needs - with energy focused on individualized instruction, self-pacing, mainstreaming, pull-out programs, talented and gifted opportunities, and learning disabilities awareness.

Who Says You Can't Get Something For Almost Nothing, Robert Kemp Jan 1985

Who Says You Can't Get Something For Almost Nothing, Robert Kemp

Iowa Journal of Communication

Free media, also called free publicity or pseudo events, is one additional way used by campaign staffs to persuade people that their candidate should be elected. Of course, set speeches, paid media, and press conferences continue as campaign aids. This paper will devote itself to an examination of the role of free media in a political campaign. Further, I will advance the thesis that free media is quite a unique device and lends itself to some of the most exciting and innovative activities performed by a campaign staff. It must be clear that the publicity is to be largely planned …

A Study Of Moral Reasoning In Young Adult Literature, Millie Jensen Jan 1985

A Study Of Moral Reasoning In Young Adult Literature, Millie Jensen

Graduate Research Papers

A moral dimension is often intrinsic to YA literature because it is concerned with the problems of youth. This study examines the moral reasoning of teenage protagonists by applying the theory of Lawrence Kohlberg to the analysis of a sample of twelve books drawn from YASD's "Best of the Best Books--1970-1982" list. The sample was structured to provide comparison between type of book (realistic fiction and fantasy/ science fiction), sex of author, and sex and age of protagonist. Analysis was made by assigning a numerical score corresponding to Kohlberg's six developmental stages to six incidents from each book and statistically …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Art Literature For Grades Four Through Eight, Shelly A. Johnson Jan 1985

An Annotated Bibliography Of Art Literature For Grades Four Through Eight, Shelly A. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The visual arts, a discipline, with a history and knowledge base is a required component of the elementary and middle school curriculum. In order to learn the language of visual symbols resources are needed. The assumption that books which deal with various topics spanning the spectrum of art will provide a link between visual and verbal information and provide, in part, necessary assistance to students in their study of art is the premise on which this research paper is based.

As a result of research into available art related books at three school libraries, one public library and one university …

Media Specialists And Levels Of Involvement In Instructional Development, Norma A. Sisson Jan 1985

Media Specialists And Levels Of Involvement In Instructional Development, Norma A. Sisson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of involvement of the media specialists in instructional development with teachers. A taxonomy developed by Dr. David Loertscher was used as a basis for the questionnaire.

A questionnaire was sent to ninety-five media specialists in public schools in four Area Educational Agencies in Iowa who worked with students in grades 7, 8, and 9. Eighty-four media specialists responded to the survey.

Each level of the taxonomy was assigned the value of its level. The average level of involvement of both the part-time and full-time media specialist was at level seven. …

The Sources, Symptoms And Alleviators Of Childhood Stress, Debra Colleen Pagitt Jan 1985

The Sources, Symptoms And Alleviators Of Childhood Stress, Debra Colleen Pagitt

Graduate Research Papers

With the fast pace of our technological society, statistics demonstrate that more and more children are victims of childhood stress (Miller, 1982). For example, child suicide has become the "eighth leading cause of death in children ages 8-14 and has become the second leading cause of death for those in the 15-24 year old age group" (Arent, 1984, p. 223). The increases in child and teen drug/alcohol addiction along with the increased number of children identified, labeled and placed in school programs for the emotionally disturbed, attest to the fact that many children are choosing dramatic ways to exhibit stress …

Models Of Mill Creek Midden Formation: Implications For Future Research, Duane C. Anderson Jan 1985

Models Of Mill Creek Midden Formation: Implications For Future Research, Duane C. Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Researchers in the 1950s viewed the deep Mill Creek village middens of northwestern Iowa as tell-like deposits resulting from intensive occupations over relatively long periods of time. This view persisted for the next two decades and provided the basis for the investigation of climatic, environmental, and cultural change. In 1973 Baerreis and Alex (1974) proposed an alternate model arguing that the middens developed as a result of the aboriginal practice of banking earth against house walls in conjunction with cycles of abandonment and subsequent reoccupation of village sites. This paper discusses these two models in the light of findings at …

Appropriate Gene Symbols In Teaching Genetics, Wilmer J. Miller Jan 1985

Appropriate Gene Symbols In Teaching Genetics, Wilmer J. Miller

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Choice of appropriate gene symbols in teaching general genetics avoids misinterpretation and misleading conclusions that are otherwise frequent. Lack of consistency in textbooks, especially with the wild-type standard concept, misdirects the student into confusing dominance with epistasis, as well as allelism with independence. The similar fallacy of ”dominant" white in White Leghorns is clarified as an "interaction" white by appropriate choice of symbols. Use of the wild-type standard method, basic in choosing symbols, allows a drastic reduction in the number of crosses necessary in comparing different stocks for genetic differences. Two related sets of rules are suggested for choosing appropriate …

The Teaching Of Student Responsibility, Respect For Self, Others And Property, Mark Douglas Farland Jan 1985

The Teaching Of Student Responsibility, Respect For Self, Others And Property, Mark Douglas Farland

Graduate Research Papers

One of the district-wide goals of the Cedar Falls Community School District during the 1980-81 school year was to "emphasize the importance of teaching student responsibility, respect for self, others and property." The writer was appointed to a district-wide committee charged with the responsibility for identifying a program to achieve that goal. For students, educators, and society the importance of the goal is unchallenged. While much has been written on the topics of student responsibility and student respect, the terms have a vagueness and complexity which seemed to the writer to warrant additional research.

Developmental Guidance: Teacher Role And Competencies, Bonita Marie Dahlhauser Jan 1985

Developmental Guidance: Teacher Role And Competencies, Bonita Marie Dahlhauser

Graduate Research Papers

Over the past 25 years, elementary school guidance has come into being and struggled to develop its own character. While its secondary school counterpart was born from the need for vocational guidance and grew to provide both educational guidance and career development (Aubrey, 1982), elementary school guidance has come to be characterized increasingly by a developmental approach (Muro & Miller, 1983). In 1977, Struck surveyed publications of state departments of education throughout the United States and found that philosophies of elementary school guidance in most of these states described their programs as developmental in nature, focused on meeting individual needs, …

Case Study: Comparison And Information Of Science Education At The Three State Universities In Iowa, Rita Hrecz

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper was threefolds:

1) To fulfill a course requirement;

2) To acquaint myself with the reason for the comme·nts I've heard about Science Education at the University of Northern Iowa being unique,

J) To exchange information between the three State Universities from my belief that we often do not communicate enough and are therefore missing opportunities to support and assist one another.

Visual Literacy: Implications For Corporate Communications, Marion Hazzard Jan 1985

Visual Literacy: Implications For Corporate Communications, Marion Hazzard

Graduate Research Papers

Visual literacy, the ability to encode and decode visual messages, is a relatively new concept. Most visual literacy efforts are directed toward school children; very little research and development addresses adults' visual literacy and the potential effects of visual literacy on corporate communications. This paper focuses on visual literacy for adult professional communicators. By examining the background and theory of visual literacy, and tracing the use of visual communication in modern business, a rationale will be established for visual literacy training in the corporate setting.

Development Of A Communications Guide To Assist In The Translation Of Hospital Mergers, Mary N. Kainer Jan 1985

Development Of A Communications Guide To Assist In The Translation Of Hospital Mergers, Mary N. Kainer

Graduate Research Papers

A major communication problem facing hospitals today is explaining how and why hospitals are reshaping their service capacities in response to changing health financing incentives and declining utilization of inpatient acute service. Hospitals are having to adapt and redefine their roles because they have fewer inpatients and because payors are changing their methods of paying for health care through insurance.

An Analysis Of The Iowa Tests Of Educational Development Performance Of Participants And Non-Participants In A Ninth Grade Contemporary Science Course, Ronald D. Millsap Jan 1985

An Analysis Of The Iowa Tests Of Educational Development Performance Of Participants And Non-Participants In A Ninth Grade Contemporary Science Course, Ronald D. Millsap

Graduate Research Papers

The need to document the results of instruction in a school system has been recorded as early as 1912 (Thorndike, 1912). Today, there is little argument about the necessity of evaluating pupil progress. Recent national attention has focused on public education and student performance on standardized achievement tests. Reports such as "Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Education Reform" (1983) agree that public schools need to be more accountable for student achievement and that standardized tests may be one of the best tools for assessing and/or evaluating the performance of students and schools.

The Essentials Of Leadership For Successful Principals, Larry D. Abel Jan 1985

The Essentials Of Leadership For Successful Principals, Larry D. Abel

Graduate Research Papers

The high school principal wears many faces in the community in which she/he lives and works (Cavanaugh and Yoder, 1984). Most patrons of the school district know who the principal is and hold high expectations for him/her. At the same time, when the residents of a school district are asked to define the principal's job in their school district, it is often hard for them to come up with a clear-cut statement. This is due to a lack of understanding of the principal 's responsibilities in the school system, and to the complexity of the principal 's role in education …

Teaching Values Through Drama, Greta Berghammer Jan 1985

Teaching Values Through Drama, Greta Berghammer

Faculty Publications

One dramatic technique to aid students in their discovery of values and value systems is "theatre-in-education" (TIE); a theatre event that takes place in schools; with actors working through roles for and with children. TIE aims to fuse education and theatre by having team members function as both teachers and actors; and the audiences of young people participate as both themselves and characters. TIE programs can be grouped into five categories ranging from full participation (category I); to full performance (category V). Topics that can be explored through TIE are personal freedom; peer pressure; and racial tolerance; leading students to …

A Study Of Residence Hall Students' Knowledge Of, And Attitudes Toward, Safety And Security Policies And Procedures At The University Of Northern Iowa, Michael Jon Woeste

Graduate Research Papers

Increasingly in recent years, serious crime has emerged as a phenomenon on American college campuses (Time, 1973). Factors such as the increased crime rate in the United States, the increased heterogeneity of the college student population, and the greater openness of the college campus have resulted in more and varied crimes on college campuses, e.g., sexual assault, theft, and vandalism (Middleton, 1981). Rape on college campuses, once unheard of, is now commonplace (Thomas, 1978, Mehreu, 1983, Dowd, 1983). American colleges and universities had had little experience with crime, and were ill prepared to deal with it.

Learning Strategies As An Aid To Graphical Comprehension, Peggy Pruisner

Graduate Research Papers

The highest human abilities- perceptual, intellectual, and linguistic- interact and support each other during the act of reading. The processing and assimilating of written information is the single goal of reading. The complex mental process that is used when a reader encounters a variety of materials that satisfy many needs and purposes cannot be easily dissected into a hierarchy of skills, but is represented by a large number of interrelated skills that gradually develop. The total process of reading is impaired if any major function or part prevents adequate performance, thereby preventing literacy. It is vital to note that the …
