The Use And Implementation Of Microcomputers In Secondary Administration, Kevin Crawford Jan 1986

The Use And Implementation Of Microcomputers In Secondary Administration, Kevin Crawford

Graduate Research Papers

The growth of computers since 1975 has been remarkable. Throughout. the country, computer stores are opening their doors to a public that is realizing the many uses of computers in homes, businesses, and schools. Computer technology has been available for many years, but it has only been since the availabilty of relatively inexpensive microcomputers that elementary and secondary schools could afford the educational advancement. National and state commissions on education recommended that computers become a part of the school curriculum. Boards of education have purchased computers to place in schools. Private industry has joined the computer movement in schools by …

Educating The American Indian/Alaska Native, Randy Kent Hawk Jan 1986

Educating The American Indian/Alaska Native, Randy Kent Hawk

Graduate Research Papers

American Indian/Alaska Native education has been a concern addressed primarily by American Indian/Alaska Native educators, parents, and interested citizens. Their concern has not yet made a major impact on the American educational system. It has surfaced largely in areas that are directly associated with American Indian/Alaska Native schools and communities. With nearly 70 percent of the American Indian/Alaska Native youth being currently educated in public schools, it is imperative that these concerns be recognized and addressed by the Non-Indian world as well (National Education Association, [NEA], 1983).

In Search Of America's Missing Children, Karen Saunders Hanson Jan 1986

In Search Of America's Missing Children, Karen Saunders Hanson

Graduate Research Papers

It has been called a "National Tragedy". It can happen in the park, at the beach, near the church, at the supermarket, at the playground, on the street in front of the house. One moment the child is there: the next moment gone. Short of death itself what could be more shocking to a family than having to report a child missing? Yet it happens to tens of thousands of parents each year. Because children can not look out for themselves, it is our responsibility to look out for them.

Listening Efficiency, Walter F. Stromer Jan 1986

Listening Efficiency, Walter F. Stromer

Iowa Journal of Communication

In a recent issue of Communication Education, three new books on listening were reviewed.1 The reviewer said of one of the books that it was motivated by the notion that we listen at 25% efficiency. A check with the reviewer, by telephone, confirms that she questions the validity of that 25% figure. This author shares that doubt. The idea that we are inefficient listeners seems to have become a cliché. It is found in many new books on listening and communication, and often the idea is expressed without footnoting or supporting evidence. One wonders if people are really more …

Sex Role Inequality And Marital Stress, Joyce A. Thomas Jan 1986

Sex Role Inequality And Marital Stress, Joyce A. Thomas

Graduate Research Papers

As the once clear definitions of marital roles become increasingly blurred by the new options available to women and as the incidence of divorce continues to rise, the relationship between sex role behavior and marital dissatisfaction has become an area of mounting concern. Many women today who find themselves in more traditional type marital roles are beginning to question if, in fact, their unequal role status within their marriage is truly satisfying.

The Relationship Between Self Esteem And Substance Abuse In Adolescents, Martha Jill Windahl Jan 1986

The Relationship Between Self Esteem And Substance Abuse In Adolescents, Martha Jill Windahl

Graduate Research Papers

The rates of use of illegal drugs by youth in the United States is higher than in any other industrialized country in the world (Suffia, 1986). In a recent survey (Johnston & O'Malley, 1986) 1,600 high school seniors reported that: 5% used marijuana daily, 17% had tried cocaine (the highest rate ever recorded), 20% had used amphetamines sometime in their lifetimes. Ninety-three percent of all high school seniors surveyed had tried alcohol while 73% reported drinking heavily within two weeks prior to the survey. Although, except for cocaine use, these figures are lower than for previous years, trends, such as …

Picture Books And The Literary Connection: A Bibliography, Susan Hall Jan 1986

Picture Books And The Literary Connection: A Bibliography, Susan Hall

Graduate Research Papers

Both elementary and secondary aged school students are required to recognize and understand various common literary devices that are employed in the fictional literature they read. In order to facilitate this learning process, using appropriate trade picture storybooks combined with traditional textbook literature may better serve to enhance student comprehension of literary devices. An examination of the past five (1980-1985) years of picture storybook reviews from The Horn Book Magazine has revealed that the picture book genre does exhibit a broad spectrum of common literary devices such as satire, analogy, flashback, and metaphor. During a single class session carefully selected …

Infertility: A Developmental Crisis Related To Parenting, Barbara Jean Braband Jan 1986

Infertility: A Developmental Crisis Related To Parenting, Barbara Jean Braband

Graduate Research Papers

The crisis of infertility strikes one in six couples of childbearing age. "Infertility, the inability to achieve pregnancy after one year of regular sexual relations, or the inability to carry pregnancy to a live birth" (Menning, 1982, p. 155), will be experienced by 15-20% of the population of childbearing ages 22-40 years (Bernstein & Mattox, 1982; Goodman & Rothman, 1984). Infertility was diagnosed as either primary or secondary. According to Bernstein and Mattox (1982) primary infertility occurred if a pregnancy had never been achieved. If a woman had been pregnant at least once, even if that pregnancy resulted in an …

The Effect Of Theory And Clinical Instruction On Freshmen And Senior Nursing Students' Attitudes And Anxieties Toward Death And Dying, Mary K. Brown Jan 1986

The Effect Of Theory And Clinical Instruction On Freshmen And Senior Nursing Students' Attitudes And Anxieties Toward Death And Dying, Mary K. Brown

Graduate Research Papers

Growing old and dying are aspects of life most people do not care to think about. We tend to deny, avoid and when possible hide death as a means of escaping from it. Nursing educators are drawn into this situation because they must prepare nurses to cope with the many losses that will occur prior to a patient's final physical death. They must also help individuals to deal with the death of loved ones.

Formative Evaluation For Instructional Improvement, Norma J. Newhouse Jan 1986

Formative Evaluation For Instructional Improvement, Norma J. Newhouse

Graduate Research Papers

As the cry of accountability gets louder and the number of available teachers gets smaller, the need for instructional improvement among practicing teachers becomes greater. Stiggins and Bridgeford (1985) suggested that effective teacher evaluation was one way to reach the goal of quality instruction. Even though evaluation could serve as a tool for instructional improvement, most evaluating today addresses summative goals. As Stiggins and Bridgeford (1985) stated, summative evaluations provided a base for administrative decisions on hiring and firing, promotions and tenure, assignments and salary. According to these authors, this was because summative evaluations were less time consuming than formative …

Comment By Steve Williams, Steve Williams Jan 1986

Comment By Steve Williams, Steve Williams

Iowa Journal of Communication

The Iowa High School Speech Association has for many years had a section in the constitution called "Coaching Ethics.” The ethics section includes items such as plagiarism, student participation, royalties, and student instruction. Rule 11 also asserts the association's position on materials and actions which may be found offensive. In the summer of 1985, IHSSA made a very slight change in Rule 11. Previously, the rule stated that ''violations may result in disqualification.'' The new rule states, ''violations will result in disqualification.'' This slight change from "may" to "will" caused great consternation among a few people who saw the new …

Comment By Haig Bosmajian, Haig Bosmajian

Iowa Journal of Communication

When in 1943 the United States Supreme Court decided that students of the Jehovah's Witness faith could not be required to salute the flag, the Court declared that the ''Fourteenth Amendment, as now applied to the States, protects the citizen against the State itself and all of its creatures-Boards of Education not excepted." [West Virginia Bd. of Ed. v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943)] I would add, "the Iowa High School Speech Association not excepted" since it too is "a creature of the state."

What is especially disturbing is that high school students are being told by the IHSSA that …

The Study Of Rhetoric In Relevant Contexts, Lawrence W. Hugenberg, James P. Lalumia Jan 1986

The Study Of Rhetoric In Relevant Contexts, Lawrence W. Hugenberg, James P. Lalumia

Iowa Journal of Communication

Rhetorical theory, whether classical or contemporary, does not always appear relevant and practical to students. The challenge of relevance was once addressed by Wil Linkugel in his rationale for a course in the rhetoric of the feminist movement. He concluded: "The course is socially relevant, it has historical authenticity, and it provides vital insights into rhetorical social influence." The authors decided to use Linkugel's three criteria and create a course entitled "The Rhetoric of the Middle East Crisis,'' designed to examine the rhetorical communication strategies surrounding this ongoing conflict. The history and significance of this conflict could be readily documented. …

A Method For Investigating Misperception Problems In Superior-Subordinate Relationships, Randall A. Rose Jan 1986

A Method For Investigating Misperception Problems In Superior-Subordinate Relationships, Randall A. Rose

Iowa Journal of Communication

A common conclusion in the organizational communication literature is that problems of superior-subordinate misperception and misunderstanding, often at extreme levels, are chronic occurrences. Authors such as Jablin and Hawkins and Preston have linked these perception problems to mutual misunderstanding of: subordinate job duties and requirements, future changes in the subordinate's job, and obstacles in the way of subordinate performance. It is safe to assume that misunderstandings of the types mentioned substantially affect organizational productivity and effectiveness. Thus, it is important that courses in organizational communication not only address the nature of superior-subordinate perception processes but that they also provide mechanisms …

Utilization Of Interactive Telecommunications To Deliver Instruction, Gregory Wayne Stewart

Graduate Research Papers

"In all my years in education, I've never seen anything like its dramatic growth in the past twelve months...it will sweep the country in the next few years" (Staff, 1986). A director in the New York Department of Education_ made that enthusiastic endorsement of telecommunications in education when reflecting on development in his state. Recent nationwide expansion of telecommunications efforts and rapid development of related technologies have boosted the potential of interactive television in education.

The Development And Implementation Of High School English And Mathematics Subject Matter Requirements For Admission To The University Of Northern Iowa, Jean Schrader Lang Jan 1986

The Development And Implementation Of High School English And Mathematics Subject Matter Requirements For Admission To The University Of Northern Iowa, Jean Schrader Lang

Graduate Research Papers

American colleges and universities are coming to grips with a problem regarding the admission of students direct from high school. Administrators, faculty members, parents and even students have voiced a concern that high school students are insufficiently encouraged to select college preparatory courses. Most colleges and universities have based admission decisions on high school grade point averages and college entrance examination scores. Therefore, many high school students have opted for less demanding courses, and for the relative ease of earning high grades, but subsequently enter postsecondary institutions with insufficient background in some critical subject matter areas (Estee, 1983).

Counseling For Mexican-American College Students, Ted Robert Johnson Jan 1986

Counseling For Mexican-American College Students, Ted Robert Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

The concept of the American "melting pot" is giving way to a country which celebrates ethnic diversity. This can be seen in the Mexican-American population, which is a large part of the rapidly growing Hispanic population. The latter includes large numbers of Cuban American, Puerto Ricans, and peoples whose heritage stems from Central and South America. The Hispanic population in the United States increased 61% between 1970 and 1980, from 9. 1 mill ion to 14.6 million (Ford Foundation, 1984). Extrapolating a continued pattern of growth, some experts believe that Blacks and Hispanics combined will surpass Whites as the nation's …

Paradox As A Family Ingredient, Katherine L. Fluke Jan 1986

Paradox As A Family Ingredient, Katherine L. Fluke

Graduate Research Papers

Several problems are evident when examining the use of paradox in family therapy. Experts in the field vary on the definition of paradox; how to label and categorize paradox; when to use or not use paradox; and the very nature of paradox as a therapy ingredient. Many experts express the opinion that paradox is part of the essence of life and relationships, particularly the therapist/client relationship. In this paper it will be assumed the reader has a knowledge of family· therapy and a frame of reference or theory base from which they operate. How paradox can be defined; the nature …

Understanding Why Children And Adolescents Attempt Suicide, Michael Thomas Brinkman Jan 1986

Understanding Why Children And Adolescents Attempt Suicide, Michael Thomas Brinkman

Graduate Research Papers

Until recently, childhood suicidal behavior has been a relatively neglected area of systematic research and clinical concern (Wells & Stuart, 1980). There were several contributing issues. First, completed suicide among children was considered to be rare. Second, it was believed that, due to a lack of physical prowess, youngsters could not affect a fatal self-injury. Third, because children under ten may not realize that death is final, it was thought that, by definition, youngsters could not be considered suicidal. Consequently, vital statistics do not catalog self-killing as a cause of death in children under ten.

Models Of Relationship And Problem Solving Training For Peer Counselors, Grace Smith Jan 1986

Models Of Relationship And Problem Solving Training For Peer Counselors, Grace Smith

Graduate Research Papers

One of the major considerations in the field of mental health had been the use and training of paraprofessionals in the helping process (Brown, 1974). Also called lay helpers or peer counselors, paraprofessionals are trained in using the basic skills of helping whether they are working in school or agency settings (Myrick & Emery, 1979). Peer counselors use these skills to enhance the functioning of professionals by adding to the number and range of people who can be helped, and by making sure that those who need professional help are referred (Rockwell & Dustin, 1979). In this way the visibility …
