Education For Gifted And Talented Children: Suggestions For Improving Gifted And Talented Programs In Malaysia, Md Ismail Bin Jamjam
Education For Gifted And Talented Children: Suggestions For Improving Gifted And Talented Programs In Malaysia, Md Ismail Bin Jamjam
Graduate Research Papers
Gifted and talented children are an asset to every society. If they are to be the leaders of tomorrow, there is a critical need to educate them well for the future. Education targeted for the gifted and talented was initiated in Malaysia in the early 20th Century when the first fully residential school was established. But it appears that in the years since its inception there has been no plan to differentiate significantly this program from the regular day schools, which are the conventional form of education common in Malaysia.
Instructional Leadership: Qualifications Of The Evaluator, Patricia A. Beaulieu
Instructional Leadership: Qualifications Of The Evaluator, Patricia A. Beaulieu
Graduate Research Papers
A well-designed teacher evaluation process provides a communication link between the school system and its teachers. The evaluation process imparts teaching concepts to teachers and it helps the system structure, manage, and reward teachers. Principals as instructional leaders are responsible for those teacher evaluations. In order to be effective evaluators, they must be qualified. Principals need to be a source of expert information, knowledge, and skill. They should be capable 0£ enriching the content of an instructional program by determining the beat teaching methodology for their schools. This paper examined what the principal needs to know in order to be …
The Elementary Principal's Role In Sensitizing Teachers To The Effects Divorce Has On Their Classroom Students' Academic Achievement, Donald Boyd Shaw
The Elementary Principal's Role In Sensitizing Teachers To The Effects Divorce Has On Their Classroom Students' Academic Achievement, Donald Boyd Shaw
Graduate Research Papers
The divorce rate of parents with school age children is increasing at an alarming rate. The divorce rate has more than doubled from 1965 to 1975 involving over 60 percent with children (Damon, 1979). In 1981 there were 1,180,000 children affected by divorce, accounting for 20 percent of student enrollment (Cantraell, 1986; Drake, 1981). Silvern (1985) projected that by 1990, 32 percent of American children may face a divorce in their family. These startling statistics have caused educators to examine the effects that divorce can have on student achievement.
University Of Iowa Model For Science Teacher Education, Robert E. Yager
University Of Iowa Model For Science Teacher Education, Robert E. Yager
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Teachers can learn to assess their teaching performance and to use such information for improvement. Several observations and experiments have led to the formulation of a model at the University of Iowa which continues to grow and to be modified as experiences with it dictate. The model has evolved from over two decades of efforts. However; it has matured as a result of the NSF supported Iowa-UPSTEP program (a teacher-education development effort which enjoyed ten years of support), and the NSTA Search for Excellence project which arose from a 1977-80 NSF research effort called Project Synthesis (Harms & Yager, 1981).

Editor's Corner - Support And Growth, Carl W. Bollwinkel
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Having now begun my fifth year as editor of the Iowa Science Teachers Journal (ISTJ), I have become quite certain of the optimum role of the ISTJ and the factors needed for that role to be filled. Inside the front cover of the ISTJ is stated that the Journal is dedicated to the improvement of science teaching and the stimulation of interest in scientific studies. If a strong science education program is to be maintained in Iowa, this publication must include material for science teachers from elementary through graduate science methods.

Counseling Of Japanese College Students In Cross-Cultural Contexts, Satoko Watanabe
Counseling Of Japanese College Students In Cross-Cultural Contexts, Satoko Watanabe
Graduate Research Papers
There a1·e a fairly good number of Japanese students studying at many American colleges and universities Counseling of Japanese students should be examined from two aspects: Japanese students as international students and as Asians with cultural values similar to Asian Americans. Some studies have been done on the mental health of Asian Americans and international students and the needs for cross-cultural counseling of clients with diverse cultural backgrounds. Little research has been done which focuses on Japanese students. In this paper, I would like to address some cultural characteristics which influence a counseling relationship and processes of counseling with Japanese …
Alcohol Education: Are We Providing What Is Needed?, Nina Renee Coulson
Alcohol Education: Are We Providing What Is Needed?, Nina Renee Coulson
Graduate Research Papers
"Alcohol abuse in the United States is a pervasive problem effecting many children and their families. 1 There are 100 million drinkers in the United States, and 10 million are chronic abusers; drunk drivers kill 28,000 people each year on the nation's highways; alcohol is associated with about 69% of all drownings; it is a factor in approximately 70% of all deaths and 63% of all injuries from falls; and $19 billion a year is lost to business, government, and industry because of decreased work productivity caused by alcohol abuse" (Channing L. Bete Co., 1984, p.209). These statistics show a …

Eliminating Drunk Driving: A Contemporary Problem, Rebecca S. Lavenz
Graduate Research Papers
Since the advent of the "horseless carriage" in this country, we as a society have been dealing with the dilemma of preventing deaths, personal injuries, and property damage and loss from automobile accidents. With the ownership of automobiles moving from an item of luxury belonging to just the wealthy, to a daily life-style essential to the masses, traffic legislation has become a necessity of life. Part of this traffic legislation has included enacting laws in an attempt to eliminate alcohol impaired drivers from operating motor vehicles on the public highways.
A Comparison Of Catholic Schools And Public Schools, Jeffory John Corkery
A Comparison Of Catholic Schools And Public Schools, Jeffory John Corkery
Graduate Research Papers
Competency testing for teachers, voucher payments, and tuition tax credits are only some of the focal points which have fueled the fire of discussions about the advantages and disadvantages of private education (particularly Catholic) and public education. This paper will examine what is perceived by both the public and those in the educational field to be the advantages and disadvantages of Catholic schools, when compared to public schools.
Developing Effective Counseling Facilities In Schools, Michael John Butler
Developing Effective Counseling Facilities In Schools, Michael John Butler
Graduate Research Papers
As counseling becomes more and more important in school systems, the planning for and designing of effective physical facilities becomes more important. It is the intent of this paper to assist an individual interested in school counseling to explore the physical setting for the most conducive counseling and guidance delivery. Each individual school may want to amend the suggested plan based on school size and guidance philosophy.
Program Sharing And It's Effect On Iowa Schools, Charles L. Buckel
Program Sharing And It's Effect On Iowa Schools, Charles L. Buckel
Graduate Research Papers
In the late 1970's many communities began to feel the effects of declining enrollment in their school populations. Today, many school districts are closing their elementary schools and have reduced the number of elementary teachers, as financial constraints become more stringent other school districts will also be forced to look at alternatives. Few of these communities, however, have planned ahead for the high school enrollment decline which will arrive as smaller classes in elementary grades move on through the school system.
The Teacher/Coach Role Conflict In American Schools, Bernard Ray Stephenson Jr.
The Teacher/Coach Role Conflict In American Schools, Bernard Ray Stephenson Jr.
Graduate Research Papers
Concern over the effectiveness of the teacher/coach is a relatively new phenomenon. The earlier concern about the teacher/coach was simply a side issue of the larger topic of all teacher role conflicts. Before 1977 most material on the subject of the teacher/coach was of the subjective or normative type rather than the analytical or empirical type. To that point it seemed that the subject had few interested researchers. The stimuli which seemed to move the topic off center were wide and varied: Title Nine; the economic slowdown and fewer job openings; coaches retraining existing jobs for tenure rather than job …
Parental/Teacher Influence On The Stress Level Of The Elementary School Child, Claudia Kae Morris
Parental/Teacher Influence On The Stress Level Of The Elementary School Child, Claudia Kae Morris
Graduate Research Papers
All children in the course of growing up encounter minor stresses: accidents and illnesses, the birth of a new baby, a move of house and school, the inevitable demands for increasing maturity and self-control. Most children at some time react to these stresses with temporary disorders, such as nightmares, bed-wetting, temper tantrums or excessive fear. Parents and teachers usually know almost intuitively what these symptoms mean and they respond by lessening the pressures on the child. Serious difficulties arise only when the stresses are overwhelming or when the adults are too preoccupied to attend to the child's signals of distress.
School Climate And Its Development, Jack M. Williams
School Climate And Its Development, Jack M. Williams
Graduate Research Papers
What is school climate? What are the characteristics of schools with positive climates? How can principals develop positive climates in today's schools? Climate is unique to each individual school and reflects the attitudes, behaviors and achievements of the people involved in its operation (Kalis, 1980: National Association of Elementary School Principals [NAESP], 1984).
Salient Characteristics Of Non-Traditional Students: Implications For College Student Personnel Services, Debra Murphy-Scheumann
Salient Characteristics Of Non-Traditional Students: Implications For College Student Personnel Services, Debra Murphy-Scheumann
Graduate Research Papers
This population is not an easy one to identify. The search for a meaningful profile is complicated by the heterogeneity of the group 2 and the multiplicity of sub-groups. Yet, it is obvious that we have seen a dramatic increase in this student population which has received too little attention from professionals in higher education. Currently, student services tend to focus on the college student 17 through 25 years of age, single, male, unemployed, and full-time (Cross, 1974). Student services that have been implemented for the non-traditional student are mainly in the academic areas, with such programs as evening/weekend classes, …
Quality Circles In Education, David R. Stover
Quality Circles In Education, David R. Stover
Graduate Research Papers
Dewar (1984) defines Quality Circles as "a group of people who voluntarily meet together on a regular basis to identify, analyze, and solve quality and other problems in their area" (p. 5). A review of the literature indicates that the Quality Circle concept is similar to participatory management or Theory Z management. Crisci, (1983), and Torrance, (1982) has identified Japan as having been given substantial credit for originating the Quality Circle movement. However, history tells us that two Americans, Dr. W.E. Deming and Dr. J.M. Juran were sent to Japan following World War II to help Japanese manufacturers develop methods …
The Idol In The Carpet, David Powell
The Idol In The Carpet, David Powell
Draftings In
The archetypal reading featured in Joseph Albrecht's article encouraged me to pursue the somewhat specialized reading I offer below. When I began my second reading of Henry James's short story "The Figure in the Carpet,” the notion of Vanity seemed to me to be very strong in the text. Midway through the first reading, I had suspected that no Figure would be given. Still, as a consequence of the standard a-priori assumption, I could not accept the frustration of closure. The construction I ultimately produced satisfied my own need for a "tight" reading. This result represents, I think, a dedicated …
